Green Day Q&A Thread

Historically, around what time of day and day of the week do singles come out? Also if an album announcement was made via magazine or the internet. What time of day (and day of the week) would it most likely occur?

Dunno about when during the day though, Warner is in Cali though so probably sometime during the normal work day PST?

Wait, if he hates Lynyrd Skynyrd (and I know that I've read him talking about how it partially inspired AI somewhere before), why does GD play Sweet Home Alabama at concerts all the time? I know that there are at least a dozen recordings on YouTube of them covering it on the 21CB tour. Is it meant to be done ironically?

Yeah I think it's how @Hermione said. They never play that song in its entirety (at least not that I know of) and I'm guessing they're  just being ironic :) he probably doesn't like them for their unconditional American pride and because they play with a confederate flag in the background everytime. Typical rednecks. But I gotta say the song has a nice tune!

It's a tradition started by John, since he likes Lynyrd Skynyrd. They usually play Sweet Home Alabama and I Don't Know by Ozzy Osbourne during the bridge of Disappearing Boy

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation.

Does anyone know what the thing Billie uses to change his voice in Heart Like A Hand Grenade is called? It's that part where they're talking in the studio and he records "YEAAAHHH" into it.

I just found this video and I wonder where this is from? I doubt that Tré pissed him off as it says in the title, but it's still kinda weird for him to flip out like that? :ermm:

Was that around the time of the iHeart situation slash tragedy?

Think it was something to do with his guitar being out of tune...

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this was Irving Plaza which was about a week before iheart

Oh, I should have done some more research  I just found another video and it says it's in Brazil in 2010. Some people say the guitar didn't work others say he was mad because Tré fucked up and played the wrong part of the song. But again, I can't imagine why he would be so angry because of a mistake. In the video he comes back to the stage, says "I don't wanna play the fucking song" and that they're going to play 2,000 Lightyears Away instead. It's still seems very weird... maybe something happened around that time and he was stressed or troubled or I don't know :o

Edit: skip to 0:30

I just re-read the RS interview for the first time in years - is the equipment we have seen so far indicative of this sound.... (remember I am musically DUMB:ga:)

I can only take it one song at a time. I just want to write good songs that people love, which is a tough thing to do. It would be great to do another rock opera, but using more low-fi technology. I love shitty-sounding records [grins]. I'd love to do more stuff with Green Day that is 100 percent live. Sometimes I wish we would have recorded our last records that way — that Exile on Main Street feel, where you just get some good tones and go.

One thing I can't do is do anything half-assed. I want to make sure everything is right, that the song is fully realized. I think of the first Ramones album and the first Clash album — those songs are fully realized, well played. You can almost hear them doing it in a practice room. You can tell how time goes on, when you fast-forward to [the Clash's] Sandinista! You know all that stuff was done in the studio.

I'm not a musical genius or anything so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can get that sound out of most any equipmement.  I would love if they had a grittier sound with more distortion like they did back with their earlier albums.

Does Billie think that the Trilogy songs were "fully realized"? Listening to them I find that hard to believe.

It was 2 years before iHeart but around that time Billie was showing some issues on stage (eg the Steve Jobs rant).

As for that specific outburst, there's different beliefs to what had happened. One being Tre fucked up the intro, another being a guitar string broke, and another being the guitar is out of tune. We don't really know the real reason. You could say it was an over reaction but he did a similar thing at the Reading festival in 2013 where he's guitar went out of tune during Waiting so he through it, and he was completely sober there.

He just got pissed off because the song got messed up . Nothing new from him, he's passionate when he's performing and he's been pissed off/had a little tantrum on stage many times before (like seriously haven't people seen old shows? the guy can be stroppy). And you can see that he's already calmed down when he comes back and says, somewhat light heartedly, "I don't want to play that song any more" and then goes on with the show just fine. Of course if he was having drinking issues at the time it might've made him more likely to get pissed off, but it's something that's in his nature to do anyway.

There is nothing serious in it and he probably did that in anxiety. I remember one more video (Live MTV Italy 2005), while playing WMUWSE just before the solo had begun Tre messed up a bit on drums but Billie didn't freaked, he laughed on Tre in a friendly manner and carried on.

I have no idea if it is available but you can easily make it yourself.  Just get sticker paper at Staples, or another office supply store and print it

I have that on a wrist... um... fabric wrist band? I don't know what those things are called. I remember getting it at Hot Topic back in 2005. I'm curious as to what other merchandise that design was used on
