Do you know where it’s possible to buy this version still? Don’t think I’ve ever come across it.

Not on Amazon, but Ebay has plenty of them.  Some jokers are trying to sale the sealed ones for 60, but you can get a rather good looking one for 11-15 dollars right now.   From someone who has owned the book since the release date back in the day, I personally feel like it's worth about 30 dollars or so.

Here are some of the cool things about it:

There are some alternate layouts of the liner notes.  The lyrics are written out a little differently, as there are full pages instead of a little square.

About 27 color pictures that illustrate the story.

Seven written excerpts from Johnny/Jimmy in either Journal or Letter form :    Journal entries about his pain.   A letter to The City which reveals a lot about his character and his motivations.  An extremely dark letter to his mom, with references to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, call backs to Jesus of Suburbia and possibly even some lyrics from The Network. This letter is written during "give me novacaine", as he shares with his mother than Jimmy has introduced him to drugs.    A non-delivered letter to his Dad that describes what is happening in Homecoming.

It gets better!  A polaroid of Whatshername, his scribbling on the back on how she makes him feel!   I am one of those people who always says Idiot isn't very political, but these little notes and letters, particularly Jimmys diary entries are very much political.  He wants to rage against the system, but he's just an angry kid and doesn't have the ability to do anything, really.   Or doesn't know the right way to do so.

Politically speaking:   The kid is so angry he wants to start a war.  But mostly he smokes, drinks and cusses a lot.   He talks about rallying the troops, Telling the bishop there's a resistance occuring.....he's struggling with all sorts of worldy problems, his biggest being loneliness.  This is after all, the guy who walks that empty street on the boulevard of broken dreams.  He has no friends and no girls.   But needs both.

WoW, I'm totally going to listen to the album tonight.  The book has pulled me in!

The tragedy of Idiot is if he had just met this magical girl earlier or later in life, it could have all worked out.  But he meets her after spiraling out of control and getting hooked on drugs.  They are happy for that fleeting moment in She's a Rebel, but even then he can't understand her.  And then it all turns bad in the next song.  I'm tearing up right now.

I think you actually got mine. I got a notification that the payment didn't go through. ebay sucks apparently. I tried several times with different methods (it's definitely not because of  my accounts) and I thought it went through the last time, but apparently not. And it now says no longer available :/

EDIT: I found another one and it worked this time thankfully :)

Oh I’m so sorry! I wouldn’t have done it after seeing your post but I saw that it said two available. Now I hope I get mine, maybe they were both gone. 😕 I did get a confirmation though so hopefully it ships.

Do we know if Billie wrote all the stuff in the book?

If all good! Mine was weird with the confirmation the first time so I think as long as it says confirmed you’ll be good. Least I hope we both are. And yeah I’m not sure. I would imagine he did? Does anyone else know?

If you like it, there are editions of Breakdown and Rev Rad like it as well, although I wasn't as enthused for them.   Breakdown has some really great artwork inside, but lacks the depth and emotion that was captured in the Idiot book.  if anything, Breakdown could have used MORE letters/journals but there are none.  Just a lesser rehash of what was done well before.  And I was kind of pissed that I spent the money on Rev Rad.   There is nothing interesting in the book version, at all.   pictures of guys in Green Day masks who may or may not be them.   Lyrics.   That's it.

Full page book and they couldn't even bother to put correct credits at the end.   PPPssh.

I'd like to know if these books and the writing in the trilogy booklet is all Billie's work.

Since it's not credited to anyone I think it must be either Billie or the designer of the album artwork, as otherwise someone else would be credited for it. And Billie seems more likely. But I'd also like to know for sure or just to know more about it. Some of the trilogy ones are particularly interesting.

Doesn't Michael Mayer say Billie had written it all, either in Broadway Idiot or it may have been one of the interviews they did together?

I don't know but if you can remember that then probably! I really think it must be him, simply because it sounds like it, fits with the lyrics he wrote, and I don't know who else could have done it without being credited for it.

It's strange no one is credited, but yes, it makes Billie the most likely option

The trilogy ones are unbelievably dark. I can’t imagine anyone else writing those either some of them seem so personal.

Yes and I'm not sure if anyone else would pinpoint the dark themes because the main idea was that it was supposed to be lighthearted, so idk if a copywriter would get away with it.

Sorry, bit delayed, but here is the part of the interview which I take to mean they are Billie's notes, at about 1.20.   I know it could still be uncertain but Billie doesn't say anything to contradict Michael.  This is a great interview by the way if you haven't watched all three bits.  Just to mix threads, Billie looks and sounds amazing, and it's a good one for the fangirls with a thing for his hands (and hair).

This made me go back and look at the Trilogy notes, and gosh yes, they are almost desperate!

Has there been a show on the Longshot tour so far where Billie hasn't forgotten some lyrics to Happiness? It seems like he does it every damn time.

He did it right in Oakland and SF.  Must have left the lyrics at home after that. :)

It’s always the same line too you would think he would just practice it more but maybe he doesn’t care because it’s becoming like a joke to say Oh shit I fucked up the lyrics! every time 😄

Does anyone know who's managing Green Day now since Pat left?

Hey, welcome to GDC!  Since it was a short and quickly answered question, I’ve merged your thread into the existing ‘Green Day Q&A Thread’, which is better for one-off factual questions that can be answered quickly without too much discussion.  Since you’re new, it may be helpful to have a read of the forum guidelines to familiarise yourself with things around here.  Hope to see you around!
