never really thought about it like that, but I agree with you. personally, I don't interpret them as being dead... I might be wrong on that?

I think it's rather that they are no longer around and therefore the friend group is dead. After all, the song or the story itself is about drifting apart from somebody you love.

No, that happened on New Year's Eve. I remember, because I was crying many tears of joy because I snagged tickets to the Pittsburgh show last minute after they canceled Cleveland. Then I swore "they better make it up to Cleveland, goddammit!" And they did, two years later.

wtf was it then.

Thanks for your answers, helped me a lot!

Another question: where can I find something on the period Billie left home, when he wrote "Welcome to paradise"? Googled it, but can't find the info.

Why did he decided to leave? I think it would help me understand the Jesus of Suburbia song.

No I don't interpret them as being dead either but dead is An ending. The underbellys stacked 10 high is a symbol of an ending.

Do you guys know how the idea to incorporate the name Juliana into ¡Tre! cam to be? As in "Juliana walks on holy ground" and "Juliana homicide" in Dirty Rotten Bastards? Was it someone that Billie knew like Amanda, or is it just a made up character?

Just theories

I still say it's a tribute to the show Homicide Life On The Streets one of the big characters was named Juilana

i think it might have been when we got word of billie's rolling stone interview after rehab?

"Got word of" sounds right for GDC because didn't it come out in March.

Might be wrong, but I think I remember reading somewhere that Dirty Rotten Bastards was about Billie drinking again?

On the show, Julianna's father is killed by a drunk driver and she becomes an alcoholic to ease the pain. I guess that minus the drunk driver, its almost a correlation to Billie.

Should the captain cook hotel sydney secret show be filed in the secret show thread not 99 rev thread?

All of these ideas are speculation though...he never said what these songs are about so we will never know exactly if Juliana is intended to be a character from tv or was someone he knew like Ashley etc etc. A lot of the lyrics from the trilogy were non-sensical or random words jammed together to form sentences so putting "homicide" in may have just been to rhyme with "alive" and "bride" who knows? Also technically he never really stopped drinking so how could DRB be about him starting drinking again  and it includes lyrics about "chop me a line" so it alludes to drug use. Honestly in it's basic form it seems to just be about going on a major bender because you no longer give any fucks.

What happened with GD on 30/1/13 to have so many GDC'ers online.

The only other thing I can think of was that when they announced their return with 3 small concerts.

i think it might have been when we got word of billie's rolling stone interview after rehab?

Very bored, so I went back and checked. It was the day that Billie's car was put up for sale on eBay.

Surely not - but I do remember when his newport house went on the market - it was like ring gate all over again.

Glad to see "ring-gate" is a thing now. :D

I know a while ago we were discussing Are We the Waiting being about the time Billie spent in NY while writing AI, but I don't remember when or what thread it was, so just wondering if anyone has a link to the article about it? Or anything else about how that trip related to writing AI, since I don't think I actually know much about it and I'm intrigued.

I heard he came up with the story and wrote most od the songs during the trip. Also that he was drinking heavily. I don't know how valid these informations are. Maybe there's an interview where he talks about it but i'm not sure.

Are We The Waiting isn't mentioned, but here's one example of that trip being talked about:

But first Armstrong took off for New York to get more wasted than he'd been in a long while. He left his wife and two young sons for a month and "drank a lot of red wine, and vodka tonics," he says. "I was searching for something. I'm not sure it was the most successful trip." "He was really questioning what he was doing," says Adrienne Armstrong, his wife of ten years. "It was scary, because where he had to go to get this record wasn't a place I'm sure I wanted him to be." And it wasn't until Armstrong came home and the hangover haze began to clear that he found his subject, while watching TV footage of U.S. troops invading Iraq: politics.
I found that because I remembered red wine being mentioned and googled it. I know it was mentioned in quite a few other interviews/articles as well, including him saying walking around at night looking up at the lights of the city during the trip helped inspire Are We The Waiting. There's probably more to be found in scans of 2004/2005 articles on GDA.

Yeah, that's what I'd heard, too, so you're probably right.

Thanks, hadn't read that one before!
