Green Day Q&A Thread

Can anyone confirm if "Misery" was actually played at the Comp'd Fuse taping in 2005? I've also heard someone say that they actually performed "Maria" there and whoever was at the taping mistakenly gave the wrong song title.

I remember one user on here called Lauren had this whole madcap story about how she was the one who requested Misery and she had to write out the lyrics for Billie Joe because he'd forgotten them.

It's probably complete bollocks though.

WOW !!!!!! Never heard of this interview !!!!!!

Thanks soo much for posting this !!!!!!!

You're welcome! I've founds loads of cool interviews in the past by googling interesting quotes from the band that I've heard to see if the interview they were from comes up (and just by googling "Green Day interview"), think that's how I originally came across that one. Here's a good Warning era one you might not have seen (the text is all there under the picture of the cover but it's white on a white background for some reason so you have to highlight it to read it):

There was a review of the show from some publication that went into the set list and length and talked about Billie forgetting the words to Misery and having the crowd take most of it. Will have to dig it up.

That was a 2009 soundcheck, I've seen the lyrics Billie wrote out for it and gave her. She had credibility here.

That article was great! But, they really underestimated how much of a shit hole Asbury Park is. Going to the Stone Pony was scary. And, I want to know why Billie and Mike got interviewed by MTW but Tre had to pass the time pissing in a flower pot?

I thought it was interesting how they compared Warning to Dookie. I don't think they are anything alike.

ARMSTRONG You know who's another bitter old bastard? Johnny Rotten. He sounds like my grandmother, at

times. He really sounds old. And he's so predictable in his comments about us. I mean, be a bit more novel.

Try and come up with something new. On top of that, some of the stuff from P.I.L. [Rotten's post-Pistols group]

was complete shit, as far as I'm concerned.

I love Billie even more now. Johnny Rotten was always a dick (and couldn't sing), and PIL is shit.

What are some bands or other musicians who have bashed Green Day over the years? I know Kid Rock and System of a Down have made little jabs at them, as well as the Killers. and Johnny Rotten. (I happen to like all of those bands, too bad they don't like Green Day)

Kid Rock - "Unamerican BS"

System of a Down - "We ain't no ****** political punk band"

The Killers called them "calculated anti-American".

Johnny Rotten....he's so punk he hates everything. haha.

Third Eye Blind had an accidental fight with Mike once, but everyone apologized and let it GO.

Who else?

Mr. Bungle bassist and Melvins touring bassist Trever Dunn called Billie "a little weasel" and a "rock'n'roll brat throwing a tantrum, going AWOL" after the iHeart Radio Festival rant in Las Vegas in 2012.

Former Guns N' Roses drummer (who played on Use Your Illusion I, most of Use Your Illusion II, and the covers album The Spaghetti Incident?) and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum labelled Green Day as "corporate rock" because they apologized for the Las Vegas rant, as he thought Billie's rant was "the most punk rock thing he has ever done", but also went on to say that he "never really bought that band anyway"

Also, Noel Gallagher of Oasis said Green Day ripped off the song Wonderwall by using the same arrangement for Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and added that "they should have the decency to wait until I am dead before stealing my songs". He also said that Green Day have called themselves "a kick-ass rock 'n' roll band" and he added that "they could not be less kick-ass if they tried"

So Matt Sorum insulted the band that inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nice.

Unfortunately Noel is right, the intro is virtually the same chord progression.

I think it's just a fairly common chord progression though, as a whole the songs don't sound very alike, hardly enough to call it a rip off. Which reminds me, Green Day had an amusing dig at Oasis several years before that, at about 2:30 here :D

In fairness, Noel criticising anyone for ripping him off is the most hypocritical thing that's ever happened.

True, nit that I would defend him, but it is still the same chord progression. So he is right, technically.

That was hysterical, like watching paint dry. It is a pretty common chord progression.

Yeah I wouldn't say writing a song with the same chord progression as another song equates to stealing a song. There must be thousands of songs with chord progressions that aren't unique especially within a narrow genre like rock ballads, there's only so many suitable combinations.

If BOBD and Wonderwall are the same song then so are Holiday and Africa by Toto, sooooo.

Sorry, I think everything I said came out wrong. I was not trying to say they were the same song, just that the intro is a similar chord progression. That is where it ends. Forgive me, please. :(

Were there any alternate album titles out there? I know Dookie was originally Liquid Dookie, but that was deemed a little too gross. Just wondering if there were any more of those, or even rumored album titles that never came to be. Like "Hillside Dance"............

Insomniac was originally going to be called Tight Wad Hill.

I've never understood why they would want to name it after the worst song on the album.

It'd beat not naming it after a song on the album :P
