10 Songs That Remind Us Of Growing Up In The 90s

“Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” by Green Day

Released in 1997, Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” has since become the go-to song for countless graduation ceremonies and proms. As you put your arms around your friends and loved ones, this is when you reminisce about the good times.

This is also the song that probably made you want to learn how to play the guitar. In my case, “Time of Your Life” was the first track I REALLY took the time to perfect. Having practiced the melody, chords and strumming patterns non-stop until my fingers start hurt, Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” will always hold a special place in my heart as it reminds me of my embarrassing days of trying to be “punk rock.” In fact, I thought I was such a rockstar that this was also the song I performed at a talent show with my elementary school. Yeah, I was pretty badass.

Probably the most relatable thing for any guitarist here.

I've only leared up through the first verse, and even I can relate to that :P

Good riddance was the first song I learnt on guitar, the picking pattern alone (when playing at correct speed) hurts my brain so badly, especially in the bridge

Yeah, I remember the first time, and it went like this :

"Good, It's G, It's fine. DAMMIT, YOU C!" I always caught like a wrong string, or it sounded awful because I accidently covered two more strings.

What the hell? I might understand the confusion if Green Day had at least covered it but they never have, Billie Joe covered it on his own but Green Day as a band haven't. And wouldn't they have had to ask permission from Pinhead Gunpowder to record it and know it was by them as a result anyway?

Story Behind the Song: 'I Fought the Law'

The song was first cut in 1960 by his band, The Crickets — on the first album they released after the death of their frontman, Buddy Holly. It became a hit for the Bobby Fuller Four several years later, and then an anthem for countless rock rebels, from The Clash to Hank Williams Jr. to Green Day.

It's one of those songs that keeps getting used in movies, TV, commercials, all over the place. Does that even surprise you sometimes?

It does surprise me, in a good way. On the Super Bowl three or four years ago, a group called Green Day did it with a Pepsi commercial, and that was a real nice surprise. I hear it a lot by different artists, and I'm always glad.

That is precisely what went through my head after I went my laconic reply. And there's a style difference, too; one just can't call Pinhead Gunpowder Green Day and get away with it.

But one can call Foxboro Hot Tubs Green Day as long as they call the album Dos.

Five Bands That Must Go Into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Green Day. At the turn of the millennium, the idea of Green Day as a viable Hall of Fame nominee, much less a first-ballot selection, would have been laughable. Sure, the band did well on the charts, helped bring punk to the masses, and released a legitimate, jam-packed greatest-hits collection, but so what? Then "American Idiot" happened, and seemingly overnight, the Northern California trio went from being branded a one-trick, three-chord pony to the authors of rock's next chapter. Easily one of the most ambitious records of the modern musical era, it is also among its best. Following a massive stadium tour - a rarity among non-classic rock acts - Green Day took its album to Broadway, and in the decade since has continued breaking new ground, following up with another epic ("21st Century Breakdown"), releasing a full record under an alter ego (Foxboro Hot Tubs), and putting out a three-part album whose promotion was both heightened and stunted by a rehab stay for singer Billie Joe Armstrong. Green Day's transformation from punk kids with an album called "Dookie" to Grammy and Tony Award winning artists has been impressive, as is its seemingly unending supply of undeniably catchy songs, but its influence on 21st century music - both in what other bands sound like, and what they know they can sound like - has been the final piece in earning this group a spot in the Hall.

How many bands can be inducted in one year?

The HOF rules say that they can induct 5 tp 7 per year, in the performer category. The 15 nominees are in the performer category. There are other categories, that is why there are more than 7 in some years. The performers with the most votes get in. I have not been able to find anything that says how many votes they need to get in.

It's a secret ballot, so we'll probably never know. There are more than 600 votes from musicians, producers, journalists, etc. cast, and only one "fan" vote from online voting.

Understood, but the entire voting population (musicians, fan vote, etc. ), votes and they elect 5 to 7 performers per year. I would imagine it works similar to the baseball hall of fame, where you need to be on 75% of the ballots to be elected. That is why they don't elect the same amount of performers per year. I could not find anything that states what the percentage or number of votes required is. In some years, there are more than 7 people elected, that is because there are differenct categories. One, for example, is musical excellence. GD is nominated in the performer category.

Squier Stratocaster HHS Autographed by Billie Joe Armstrong!
Up for auction is a sunburst Squier Stratocaster autographed by Bille Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Please Note: this is a stock image, but images of the actual signed guitar are coming soon.

If you're a fan of Green Day, you'd have to be an American Idiot to not bid on this guitar. When it Comes Around, there will only be about day to make your bids, and after that, it's Good Riddance. We all know that Nice Guys Finish Last, so you may need to take the Longview and bid aggressively here. So take our Warning, bid on this guitar and soon you'll be saying Welcome to Paradise instead of landing on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Reverb.com certifies the authenticity of the autograph.
