Number 1 today in 2004: Eric Prydz beats Girls Aloud and Green Day to the top

Green Day were celebrating their tenth year of chart success in the UK and, after a three-year absence from the Official Singles Chart, hopes were high for anarchic single American Idiot, which had created new buzz around the band, the likes of which probably hadn’t been seen since 1998 hit Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).

10 Surprise Moments From iHeartRadio Music Festival

No one expected Billie Joe Armstrong to unleash an expletive-filled rant during the 2012 fest. Upset that Green Day's set was apparently being cut 20 minutes short, the singer told the festival it was "a f*cking joke." He proceeded to smash his guitar in half, telling the crowd, "I'm not f*cking Justin Bieber!"

Less than 24 hours later, Green Day apologized for the meltdown, said their set "was not cut short by Clear Channel" and announced Armstrong was headed to a treatment center for substance abuse.

New Orleans Saints tweak Superdome soundtrack's mix of rock, rap, country and Fats Domino

Another contemporary tradition is "The Saints Are Coming," the old punk rock anthem that Green Day and U2 memorably covered during the "Dome-coming," the first game in the renovated Superdome following Hurricane Katrina. It remains in the mix.

And:

How far would you travel for love? 14 songs that go the distance

Green Day didn’t get famous until the release of its major-label debut, Dookie, in the spring of 1994. But the writing was on the wall two years earlier—at least for those who had sampled the ready-for-radio songs off the group’s previous record,Kerplunk. One of the album’s catchiest tunes is “2,000 Light Years Away,” in which frontman Billie Joe Armstrong laments the absence of some unnamed woman while his bandmates supply a typically infectious blast of pop-punk. The title refers to the distance, not time, separating Armstrong from his beloved, who laughs somewhere in the distance as he sits alone in his bedroom “staring at the wall.” The girl’s voice must really carry, because 2,000 light years translates to a few trillion miles. Any sensible teenage sad sack would move on from this universe-traversing heartbreaker, but the upbeat melody suggests maybe Armstrong is holding out hope for a reunion—or worse still, contemplating a really long-distance relationship.

15 Bisexual Celebrities Open Up About Love And Sex

Billie Joe Armstrong
“I think I’ve always been bisexual,” the Green Day front man told the Advocate in 1995. “I mean, it’s something that I’ve always been interested in. I think everybody kind of fantasizes about the same sex…. It’s ingrained in our heads that it’s bad, when it’s not bad at all. It’s a very beautiful thing.”

K!’S 50 GREATEST ROCKSTARS IN THE WORLD 2014

21. BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG, GREEN DAY
LAST YEAR: 16
Billie Joe is such a huge rockstar that he could spend 364 days of the year doing absolutely nothing and do one thing on one day that would blow all other bands in the world out of the water. Green Day are having a bit of a break following a manic schedule that saw them headline the Emirates Stadium and Reading & Leeds last year, but the ongoing possibility of a film based on the Broadway musical of American Idiot (American Idiot: The Movie Of The Musical Of The Album), in which Billie Joe would play St Jimmy, and his always-interesting side-projects (did anyone else on this list quietly release an album of Everly Brothers covers with Norah Jones?) mean there’s a limit to how far Billie Joe’s ever going to be from the top.

Geez, the writer obviously knows nothing about this song or its subjects.

And didn't even listen to the song by the sound of it! Even if you knew nothing about the background there's nothing that even hints about the girl being a "heartbreaker" or "laughing" at him in the lyrics, the writer just invented it.
