7 Songs You Shouldn’t Play on the Fourth of July

5. “American Idiot,” Green Day

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since Green Day made its comeback with the political rock opera American Idiot. The album’s title single stirred up a ton of controversy when it came out. While we’d been used to hearing Green Day drop the f-bomb in its songs for years, it had never before been followed by “America.” The whole record is a scathing portrait of what American life looked like for those coming of age under the second Bush administration, and “American Idiot” presents the thesis. “Don’t wanna be an American idiot / Don’t want a nation under the new mania / And can you hear the sound of hysteria? / The subliminal mind fuck America,” are opening lyrics sure to get blood boiling on a holiday meant to celebrate the formation of this good country.

Billie Joe on Gibson Guitars!

http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/Green-Day-on-a-Gibson.aspx

Ever since Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong bought his first Les Paul junior back in 2000, he's been hooked. Since then he's rarely seen on stage without one. Throughout the past decade, Billie Joe has played various Les Paul Jr's, a Les Paul Special, an SG, and his acoustic signature Gibson Billie Joe Armstrong J-180. Armstrong has even gone so far as to play old Green Day songs, that were originally recorded on other types of guitars, on his LP Jr. So let’s take a look at Billie Joe live on stage with his many Gibson guitars!

How convenient that the writer separate "mind" and "fuck" so as to make it "fuck America" which is entirely different than "mindfuck America".

This happens so much. It's very annoying that people get the meaning of the song so wrong by isolating those 2 words. It's "the subliminal mind-fuck" America, and it was the perfect description for media overload in a time of war.

I can't think off the top of my head of a time he used not Blue for a pre Nimrod song.

I think they meant live. And Billie used his newest junior model at iHeart for songs like Longview and Basket Case (well some of it).

Have only just been able to read everything since i posted that, i really only did as i had my doubts when i saw them, he made a comment about being on Qualudes (no idea how to spell it) at the show when he was introducing everyone and forgot someone (i think Jeff Matika)'s name....but as i said in my original post, i also thought, it was their last show on the tour, he had played for 3 hours and was probably exhausted. I totalll agree its his business but i love this band so i guess i feel like i am allowed to worry...im also a drug and alcohol counsellor so i know how hard it is for a normal person to stay sober....anyway im just a casual poster due to the fact i have a child and stuff so i hope i havent offended anyone....peace

That's really cool about the band from Grantham! That's quite close to me too, I'll have to go and check them out.

I'm guessing the "band from California" is probably Emily's Army?

Nah I don't think you offended anyone, people just saw the article was probably fake and wanted to clear that up.

He actually said he took Quaaludes?? Guess most people either didn't hear him or have no clue what they are or fans would have freaked. Reminds me of when he said he did Rohypnol on BBC radio (he was there to preview trilogy songs the time of Shepherds Bush/Reading festival '12) shortly before iHeart. Quaaludes...now that's a scary thought.

"American Idiot," Green Day – Want your friends to pogo like idiots at your Indie Day party? Then crank this up. Heck, even the Broadway version would work.

Celebrating a song just because the word "American" is included? That's so 'murican again :]

Wasn't he joking about rohypnol? He was probably joking about quaaludes too, like "oh I forgot his name, I must be on something!". During a light hearted interview or moment in a show I wouldn't assume it was anything more than a joke without knowing, seems an unlikely situation to make a serious confession.

How did you assume he was joking about the Rohypnol? Perhaps at the time you might have but in hindsight especially after reading his interview with Rolling Stone, he was at his pill taking height while over in the UK and they (management etc) had a discussion the day of the Shepherds Bush gig about going to rehab right then. So was he joking or a little high and babbling a bit too much? Seems awefully strange his choice of jokes suddenly revolve around taking specific drugs.

I don't think there's anything sudden about it, he's always joked about that kind of thing (along with any other subject). This quaaludes thing in particular sounds like a joke if it was said because he forget Jeff's name for a moment while joking around introducing the band on stage. Who knows if the rohypnol mention was referencing anything real but it was said in an extremely light hearted context so I don't really see any point in speculating that it might've been when there's at least a good a chance that it wasn't.

Actually, this remark also reminds of the time when he said "And I wasn't even on drugs" after realising he wasn't singing into his mic during a show (I think). I just googled quaaludes because I frankly had no idea what they were. Apparently the characters in "These paper bullets" pop quaaludes. Considering that the tour in Australia and the opening of that play happened at about the same time (or were at least close), maybe that's why he thought about that particular drug and its effects when he forgot to introduce Jeff.

And I don't see what the difference would be in him doing rohypnol and any of the other pills that made up his backpack that sounded like a giant baby rattle at the time. So where exactlly is the speculation? It's not as if it's a bizzare accusation about some squeaky clean boyband member. Self professed drug user says he has just taken a bunch of rohypnol on the very day it's later discovered his management wanted him to completely abandon their promo tour etc and fly home to enter rehab and admits his bag was filled with pills and he couldn't even remember the combinations he was taking but I'm speculating that he MAY have actually been telling the truth rather than a joke because hey...the interview was lighthearted?

Ok.

Why is this even a discussion? In what way is it ok to discuss what meds he may or may not have ever been on. There will be speculations at times on other websites but I don't see why it needs to come here. It's just tacky and insensitive.

Just because he was taking drugs at the time it doesn't mean he couldn't joke about taking another drug in an interview where they were pretty much constantly joking/being silly/talking shit. But the thing is it doesn't matter, we know he's taken drugs, it doesn't matter which exact ones, and there's no way to know if he was serious or not with a given random comment, so there's no need to be concerned about it.

That's not what the discussion is about, you need to read back. It was an Australian article posted a few weeks ago (I am crap with time but it feels like a weeks ago?) stating the Billie wasn't sober at the secret show over there. Then Andres had posted a picture of him with a drink...more discussion and then today the post where he had said during Soundwave in Australia that he had taken Quaaludes. So it was related to that article post not random discussion.

That's my point lol...we know he was taking drugs at that time anyway so who cares if he was taking rhopynol? He probably was given that he had that "giant baby rattle" bag or whatever so who cares. Point is it was probably true and we laughed at it as a joke.
