The 12 Best Secret Gigs You’ll Wish You’d Witnessed

The night before they were set to play in front a stadium full of Brisbane fans for Soundwave, US pop-punk veterans Green Day decided to throw a surprise club show in Sydney at the eleventh hour – announcing it on Twitter a mere half an hour before they hit the stage – making it a truly special night for the lucky few hundred switched-on fans who got there in time.“I guess a few of you saw the tweet,” joked Billie Joe Armstrong when arriving on stage, before whipping his bandmates through an hour-long, 12-song set of their biggest hits, including ‘American Idiot’ and ‘Jesus of Suburbia’.

Haha taking back our place. Just remember more wins are coming in the origin for us. This was one of the first time I regret living out of Sydney. Billie gave me only an hour and a halfs notice yet I am 2 hours away, and by the time I got there it would already be full. Really sucked.

Least it gave us Aussies a story - I am happy they did it even though I didn't get to go - a bit like a foxies show.

Queensland will win the series ;)

8 Classic Alt-Rock Albums and Their Original Titles: Green Day, Blur, and More

7. Green Day - Dookie (1994)

As I wrote about in my article on great albums with awful titles, Green Day's breakthrough albumDookie originally had a much worse title: Liquid Dookie. Luckily, someone realized that Liquid Dookie was nauseatingly disgusting, instead of just playfully disgusting, so the title was mercifully cut in half.

These Paper Bullets hes been nominated for Connecticut Critics Circle Awards

http://cttheater.blogspot.it/2014/06/nominations-announced.html

Under "Special Awards" it says Billie Joe Armstrong "Songs for..." and I don't really see other nominees so I'm not sure if he is up for some special award or if they're just giving him a special award

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong shops in Temescal (Opinion)

This past Thursday evening, Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong sang medleys at an acoustic benefit with Sammy Hagar, James Hetfield, and Joe Satriani. The next day, he browsed for plaids and vintage tees at Nick St. Mary’s Elder & Pine in Oakland’s Temescal. Things are changing faster than we can write about them.

The most astonishing part about Armstrong’s surprise appearance at Elder & Pine during its one-year-anniversary kegger was the nonchalance of it. Not a single fan asked for an autograph.

“He comes in all the time,” St. Mary said, passing slices of kale-and-mushroom pizza to customers. “It’s cool to have someone like that supporting us.”

Billie Joe mentioned in a No-guns policies article

Shannon Watts, the founder of Mom's Demand Action, said the social media campaign to convince Chili's and Sonic had gathered steam over the last week, attracting the support thousands of members, along with celebrities like actress Melissa Joan Hart and rock musician Billie Joe Armstrong.

Chris Bilheimer's Good Taste

Quickest design turnaround: Green Day’s “American Idiot.” “I got a call from Billie Joe [Armstrong, the lead singer], who was looking at old movie posters by Saul Bass. [based on that style], we did a hand grenade shaped like a heart. I rammed it out, sent it to him and in 30 minutes the album cover was done.”

Green day mentioned here:

I personally could definitely go back to the East Bay bands like Crimpshrine, Fifteen and even Green Day back in the day. Good songs inspire me, don't care who wrote, sang or performed them. A good song is a good song. Fuck, I even love Huey Lewis.

Bottled Off: 10 Bands Who Suffered Worse Fate Than Macaulay Culkin's Pizza Underground

After several days of rainfall, the 1994 Woodstock site was a veritable swamp, leading to the festival being nicknamed ‘Mudstock 94’. Conducted live on television, Green Day’s set ended in a full-on mud fight between Billie Joe Armstrong and the crowd, who were already caked in mud before the punk band’s set commenced. The show ended in a near riot, as Billie Joe pulled his pants down onstage and directed a slew of obscenities at the mud-covered human diaspora. Bassist Mike Dirnt was mistook for a psychotic fan by a security guard, and would leave the festival minus two front teeth. Meanwhile, the band’s equipment was peppered with dirt yet the calamitous event only boosted Green Day’s profile, driving their album Dookie up the charts and instilling the band as masters of infamy.

6 Artists Who Have Released Album Trilogies: David Bowie, Green Day, and more

After taking over the world (and pissing off its diehard fans) with the sprawling rock operas American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, Green Day's next project was, somehow, both relatively simplified and bloated. In 2012, the band released three full-length albums, ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!, which were attempts by the band to return to its punk roots. If Green Day really was trying to be punk again, though, it would have released just one 29-minute album, instead of three 45-minute albums.

That last line makes no sense. "If Green Day really was trying to be punk again, though, it would have released just one 29-minute album, instead of three 45-minute albums.". So doing what everyone else does is punk now apparently.

I think it's more a reference to Insomniac, by far their shortest and most "punk" album.

Throwback Thursday: The First CDs We Bought

Green Day will forever hold a steadfast place in my heart, as their critically acclaimed seventh studio album, American Idiot, was the first CD I ever declared as my own. After some hefty amounts of incessant coaxing toward my mother, I found myself indubitably adrift within the vast expanse of the records’ soaring, yet angst-laden vocal patterns and radio-ready punk-rock infused instrumentals. American Idiot had me enthralled; it had me consumed; it had me in love. I’ll never forget the way “Are We The Waiting” and “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” tugged at my preteen heartstrings, or how Tré Cool’s fills in the title track first inspired me to get behind a drum kit. While some may be hesitant or embarrassed to admit American Idiot helped kickstart their journey into music, it’s something I will never deny. —Tyler Sharp

Then there are musicals rooted in albums.American Idiot gave Green Day’s pop-punk masterpiece a storyline, brought it to the stage, and even starred Billy Joe Armstrong at some performances.

Green Day mentioned
Woodstock founder considering 50th anniversary festival for 2019

The 1994 event saw the site turned into a mudbath due to adverse weather conditions. During Green Day's set the band famously started a mud fight with the crowd leading to a stage invasion which saw security mistaking the band's Mike Dirnt for a fan and tackling him onstage, leading him to seek emergency dental treatment.

5 Underrated Follow-Ups To Classic Albums: Pink Floyd, Green Day, and more

2. Green Day - Insomniac (1995)

Green Day is one of the rare examples of an indie band that actually improved after signing to a major label, though many fans cite the band's major label debut Dookie as its last (or even only) great album. However, Green Day's 1995 follow-up Insomniac is just as good, despite the fact that it's often seen as an obvious step down. Though it's a valid criticism that Green Day didn't progress musically between the two albums, Insomniac is more streamlined and concise, not to mentioned that "Stuck With Me," "Geek Stink Breath," "86," and "Walking Contradiction" being among the band's best songs.

I thought this is interesting:

Bryan Lee O'Malley, creator of Scott Pilgrim, discovered that Will from the American Idiot musical has been wearing a Scott Pilgrim shirt over the years :) he even says American Idiot was his favorite album and that he finds the situation "cool and weird"

i just want someone to build a time machine so I can go back in time and have someone from American Idiot on Broadway send me free tickets
