Soundcheck's 10 Favorite Musical Moments From Letterman's 'Late Show'

Green Day, "Basket Case" (June 29, 1994)

Long long ago (the mid '90s, let's say) I grew up in a "Dave" household, where I was allowed to stay up late with my parents so we could watch Letterman's absurdist and acidic antics before bed. And sometimes there was a musical guest so enticing to my sullen, early teen self that I'd stay up a little later: There was Weezer doing "Say It Ain't So," Bjork doing "Hyperballad," and R.E.M. doing "What's The Frequency Kenneth?" with Dan Rather?!? And then there was Green Day's snotty rendition of "Basket Case," the trio's pop punk anthem about boredom and anxiety. At that age, you spend so much time marking the line in the sand between stuff your parents liked and stuff you like. So here were "my bands," playing on big time TV, and I probably saw them for the first time sitting on the couch next to my folks. (Michael Katzif)

4. THEY COVERED GREEN DAY
Say whaaaat? Yep, they did. Kind of. When filling in for their fellow Californians, Hetfield explained where Billie Joe Armstrong was (“Getting himself sorted out”), and then bust into a short rendition of American Idiot. Which is just weird.

It was OK, but I don't think I was in their target audience (men) so I probably wasn't gonna find much to like. Since it's a Mike Judge show there were some funny one-liners, though.

Kind of boring the 9 secret identities article. Everybody (or most people) knows about them. And like 2 people commented in there, there's no Frustrators

It's 20 years since Green Day broke through to fame. And (in particular for people for whom Green Day are the band of American Idiot and that song from the Seinfeld finale) it's good to remember the earlier version of the band. Dookie probably has some of the most blatantly fucked-up lyrics of any album that has sold millions of copies; Armstrong sings about masturbating, seeing prostitutes, feeling like you're crazy, being bisexual, drug-induced paranoia, etc, and somehow makes you feel that, well, you know, that's just life.

Songpop a music quiz game that is available on facebook, android and ios has added a Green Day playlist to the game. When I found out they were making it I was expecting only the hits and singles, but they actually have a fairly wide variety of songs.

You can see a vinyl version of AAF hanging on the wall at about 1:32 in this video. (The band is a group that just got signed to Adeline Records.)

This is a bit old now and I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but apparently the Malmö Opera and Music Theatre in Sweden will be setting up a version of the AI musical next year. This will be the first time it's been played in Scandinavia.

Source. (In Swedish, sorry)

I though this musical stuff was over, but still. fun~

The guy who is currently playing Johnny did an interview recently and mentioned the show would be open for licensing to anyone who wanted to do it. So it's not put on by AI, just licensed by them.
