THE MOMENTS THAT DEFINED SOUNDWAVE 2014

GREEN DAY

Chances are anyone enjoying a quiet beer at Sydney pub the Captain Cook Hotel on Thursday 20 February around 10.30pm won't be forgetting that night in a hurry. Soundwave headliners and veteran rock band Green Day showed up and put on an impromptu set that featured a bunch of their classics.

Fans in and around the area could hardly believe their luck, including The Music's Lachlan Marks, who said, “At 10.40pm I was in my underpants working on spreadsheets. By 11pm I'd picked up two friends, parked illegally and run back to the pub.”

Photographer for The Music, Cole Bennetts also found himself in the midst of the action and managed to get some great snaps - despite the fog created from all the sweat.

The band also impressed at each of their three-hour long headlining festival sets. Mark Hebblewhite of The Music Sydney said, "The band sounded great, Billie Joe Armstrong didn’t miss a note and nostalgia reigned supreme. People will be talking about this set for a long time to come."

ahahahah you know italian sometims are a little pretentious

Someone liking "Know Your Enemy" over 17 other obscure and high quality album tracks is the opposite of pretentious, it's pathetically mainstream.

Network and Foxboro Hot Tubs mentioned.

"Likewise, see how Green Day have adopted new identities for their side-projects - the new wave electric enigma The Network and vintage garage rock group Foxboro Hot Tubs (the latter of which features frontman Billie Joe Armstrong going by the name Reverend Strychnine Twitch)."

Report: Soundwave, Melbourne 2014

At around this point of the night, Green Day launch into what will be a three-hour set, if the timetable is anything to go by (and so far it has been). Billie Joe Armstrong, you are not Bruce Springsteen. Heck, you are not even Eddie Vedder. This recent trend of marathon live sets is either going to burn out naturally or explode following a seven hour Red Hot Chili Peppers show that results in record numbers of exhaustion cases and the odd ritual suicide. Just take a second to think of how better you could spend your time than watching three hours of Green Day.

Hard rockers wave goodbye

Festival headliners hitting the stage before the sun is down are rare but Green Day had a big night on stage in front of them: three hours, in fact.

Not many bands could manage that but fortunately the pop-punk stalwarts have so many hit songs to drop in that, when coupled with Billie Joe Armstrong's performance as ringleader, they can pull it off - just.

As enjoyable as their set was, too many tracks were extended so Armstrong could engage with the crowd via the age-old "Heeyyyy-hoooo" call and response trick - it was a touch overdone.

Still the longer set allowed long-time fans to enjoy treats like 2000 Light Years Away from 1992's Kerplunk and live rarities like Redundant.

A three-hour slot could be too long for a festival but it allowed punters to check out other acts and then return to Billie Joe and co.

Green Day have been included on NME's list of "Mediocre Songs That Ruin Otherwise Amazing Albums." Controversial.

Two songs that are victims of the quality of the rest of the album. In isolation, they're pretty good, but next to the rest of the album, I can understand that opinion, to be honest.

In context though, St Jimmy is incredible after AWtW

I was about to post this until I saw you'd done it :D

The list is ridiculous, though. A few slides later:

Greg Hildreth nominated 'Fitter Happier' from Radiohead's 'OK Computer': "it's a bit poor compared to the rest of the album," he said.

That's just idiotic, if you even remotely know what the "song" is

Neil Armstrong . Extraordinary Girl is understandable but can't imagine why anyone would pick out St Jimmy there. Are We The Waiting maybe. To say they ruin the album is ludicrous though, they might be some of the weaker songs but they work perfectly as part of the album.

I like how for Public Enemy they didn't pick one song or album but just anything with lots of Flavor Flav, lol.
