From TLC to Green Day, how hits from 1994 shaped the music industry

1994 was a pretty important year for music. Topping the CD sale charts back then was TLC's "CrazySexyCool", Notorious BIG's "Ready to Die", and Blur's "Park Life," among others.

It was also the year that some artists' seminal albums were released, including Pavement's "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain", "Illmatic" by Nas and Green Day's "Dookie", just to name a few.

Here with a look back at the music that was is Shirley Halperin, music editor with The Hollywood Reporter, who's convinced that those albums and more helped shape the music scene in the US going forward.

Green Day on the list

‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’: Top 5 Musical Moments

4. Green Day cameos

While not nearly as heavily hyped as the rap stars that also pop up in the movie (see No. 2), contemporary rock is well represented with all three members of Bay Area punk heroes Green Day making their presence known in the new Anchorman movie. We’ve got our fingers crossed that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong launches into expletive-laden tirade similar to his notorious onstage anti-Justin Bieber rant last year (and fast but funny moment in Judd Apatow’s This is 40, which also features Anchorman actor Paul Rudd). He’s just so funny when he’s angry.

The Weezer Paradox: Why Can't Bands with Unlimited Resources Make Good Albums?

As much as I hate to say it, Green Day are another one. One of my first concerts ever was seeing them on the Dookie tour with Samiam opening. Even though I wasn't old enough to drive, I remember the show perfectly, specifically the fact until that point every punk anthem the group penned was razor sharp and catchy as hell. The trio seemed to understandably stall out a little bit on 1995's Insomniac and from there it's been a steady decline with the exception of 2004's American Idiot. (Can you believe the band's "comeback album" is nearly a decade old?) Again, I just tried to listen to a song called “A Little Boy Named Train” from the band’s 2012 album ¡TRÉ! and while it sounds undeniably like Green Day it’s so polished and formulaic that it’s no wonder why the album is part of a trilogy of songs that are largely indistinguishable from each other. Although we will say that Billie Joe Armstrong’s inability to age still impresses us on a daily basis.

I saw it and they were definitely not in it. Weird that they'd describe the scene in such detail in this article. Must've been deleted. A shitton of celebrities made cameo appearances at the end, but it wouldn't surprise me if Green Day became irrelevant enough for them to take them out.

Frankly, that whole scene involving the celebrities at the end should've been taken out of the movie... It just got too weird, even for me.

At 68, Music Photographer Bob Gruen Still Rocks

Is there anybody else you loved to shoot as much as John Lennon?
Joe Strummer was a voice for his generation and it was great to hang out with him. He was a brilliant and totally fun-loving guy. Nowadays, I spend time, whenever I can, with Green Day. They’re a band that has a message.

How often do you shoot Green Day?
Whenever I can. Billie Joe Armstrong describes me as part of the band and my camera is my instrument. I get along with musicians. I’ve done more sessions at 3 in the morning than 3 in the afternoon.

WHAT NOT TO DO ON STAGE

We know that set times can be frustrating. But the way not to deal with it is stopping a song that people love right in the middle and then complaining about it by dropping a slew of profanities and smashing your guitar. Especially at a festival where you know that a ton of other acts have to perform during a very short period of time as Billie Joe Armstrong does during this set from the iheartradio festival in 2012. Then again, there is a slight chance that this is the most meta version of "Basket Case" ever, in which case we apologize and applaud Mr. Armstrong.

cool story of fan meeting Ollie Armstrong (translated)

antoniokun ‏@antoniokun

"Shown is Ms. Ollie Armstrong and me, the mother of Billie Joe Armstrong leader of Green Day, she is an incredibly kind and simple person, I went to eat at the restaurant where she worked as a hostess until recently. One of the waitresses asked me if was looking for and told me that she was her friend and she was going to call home to see if she could come. 40 minutes after Ollie was there to share an hour of conversation and a breakfast that she paid without me noticing. Thank you!

Wow. I think she's been really sweet, doing this!
