desertrose
40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time 18. Green Day, 'Dookie' (1994) Green Day's major-label debut exploded across teenage America in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death like sweet, manic relief. Dookie was an irresistible paradox: 14 songs about despair detonated with Who-ish zeal and radio-tight pop craft. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong called it his "journal about what it's like to live as a street kid" — desperate for connection and frustrated to an atomic degree. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/40-greatest-punk-albums-of-all-time-75659 11 bands and artists who wouldn’t be here without Green Day https://www.kerrang.com/features/11-bands-who-wouldnt-be-here-without-green-day/ How Green Day’s Dookie captured the spirit of a generation https://www.kerrang.com/features/how-green-days-dookie-captured-the-spirit-of-a-generation/ Green Day's Basket Case: the story behind the song How Billie Joe Armstrong wrote Green Day's game-changing three-minute classic Basket Case in a basement surrounded by pizza boxes https://www.loudersound.com/features/green-day-basket-case Meanwhile, Riverdale’s Graduation Episode Involved Hot Archie Singing Green Day But what you really, really need to know about the Riverdale graduation episode is that even though Archie doesn’t get his diploma during the ceremony, he is asked to perform a song for the scene. For whatever reason, he decides to go with a cover of Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” which plays over a montage of everyone walking up to the podium in their gowns. In fairness to Archie & Co., they really have had a terrible time in high school, so it kind of is the right sentiment. You can listen to KJ Apa’s performance on Spotify below, if you so dare. https://www.vulture.com/2021/02/riverdale-graduation-episode-archie-sings-green-day.html
desertrose
Punk’s 10 greatest guitarists of all time: 10. Billie Joe Arsmtrong (Green Day) We thought we’d start off with a controversial pick and bring you Green Day’s own Billie Joe Armstrong as our first contender. Though likely to be derided by punk purists who think the genre ended in 1978, Armstrong along with Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt brought punk rock to a new generation. The band’s seminal album Dookie is undoubtedly a modern masterpiece of puerile boredom and much of that is down to Armstrong’s uncensored stance on the modern world. It’s a sure-footed stance that he brings to guitar-playing too, thrashing with the precision intensity of a pneumatic drill. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk

Give_Me_Novacaine90
https://www.altpress.com/features/best-pop-punk-drummers-of-all-time/ 20 POP-PUNK DRUMMERS WHO SET THE BEAT FOR THE WHOLE GENRE Tré Cool (Green Day) It may sound cliche, but it’s true: Ever since ’94, when Green Day skyrocketed to fame with the release of their pop-punk masterpiece, Dookie, drummer Tré Cool has been hailed as one of the best in the genre. Even as die-hard punk fans criticized the album for being too melodic, Cool’s fills and speed added an undeniable layer of texture to tracks such as “Burnout” and “Longview.” That’s why they’re still among the first songs many new pop-punk drummers set out to master.

I love this. So much better than the original Santeria LOL. (I keep trying to like that song because it is musically beautiful, so I keep trying to find the metaphor or deeper meaning in it, but no matter how hard I try to it still sounds like a song glorifying domestic violence; maybe you can help because you seem to be the expert on song meanings LOL). Still can't touch the epic mashup of Holiday and Mambo No. 5 though. 🤣

I agree it is a beautiful melody, and I like songs that take on difficult issues without sugarcoating, but this just straight-up seems like a song about a guy who wants to beat the shit out of his ex and kill her new lover because she left him, and it doesn't seem metaphorical and doesn't seem like this guy is trying to work past these feelings. I don’t know if “beat the shit out of his ex” is accurate, a bit exaggerated (it says “slap her down” once I’m not excusing it but stick to the lyrics). It’s more about revenge on the guy who stole his girl which like it or not is the subject of a lot of songs. Wake Up Call by Maroon 5, Whiskey in the Jar (Irish trad. covered by Thin Lizzy and many others) to name a couple. The ones that bother me more are the songs that focus all the violence on the woman. The one Beatles’ song I absolutely cannot listen to and enjoy is Run For Your Life. Now that’s creepy and disgusting.

The one Beatles’ song I absolutely cannot listen to and enjoy is Run For Your Life. Now that’s creepy and disgusting. I mean, I feel like yes and no on your point. You aren't wrong but I feel like you can usually find the metaphor in these others, and I can't find it here. Just when I think this guy is gonna get introspective, nope, we're back to pre-meditated murder (not a crime of passion). Seems like he just won't be able to move on until he gets his vengeance. And it strikes me as not even because he loves this woman so much, as doesn't speak highly of her here either; he just acts like he's entitled to have someone love him. Classic abuser mindset. So it's like there is more going on here than just being murderously angry about cheating, and it all seems pretty fucked-up. Anyway, total agreement on Run for Your Life. I love the Beatles to death but I can't figure out what they were going for with that. If something deeper was intended, it sure didn't come across, and it is very disturbing. Guest
So just as a follow-up and at the risk of being off-topic, I just want to say I watched the official music video for Santeria and it gave me a VERY different perspective on the song. The video feels like a comical cross between a 1960s American western and a modern Mexican telenovela, and matched with the song it seems to be a satirical take on the senselessness of violence. Also I love how a Dalmatian is the hero of the story. 🤣 In light of this I now see the song as an ironic piece, and I feel better about it. Everyone needs to see this.
