Interview with Max Becker of SWMRS on the Havin A Chat podcast where he tells a really interesting story starting at 33:00 as to what is it that makes Boulevard of Broken Dreams such a popular song. Apparently he and Billie had this conversation about it and it’s a cool little trick that you don’t even think about. I like deconstructing songwriting like this.

OOO! Gonna have to listen to this later today - after all my meetings. If there is one thing that has happened work-wise for me is that EVERYONE plans their dang zoom meetings on Fridays (or Mondays).

It’s only about a minute or so but I love it because to me it’s like showing how a magic trick is done.

Why is David Bowie credited and some other guy, at the end and before GD? Is it the music playing over the credits, if so why would they be first? Anyone know?

Just looked at it on YouTube and it says words and music David Bowie!

so looked into it further and apparently David Bowie is credited as the refrain from All the Young Dudes is sampled but in altered key, I never knew that and don’t remember anything before about that!

Oh I had no clue about this either! Quite fun considering that Billie also played All the young dudes with the Coverups :)

I knew but I don’t hear it at all???

Just the line “...twenty one guns...” has the same melody as “all the young dudes...” in the chorus.

5 guitars that defined Billie Joe Armstrong's career in punk

Green Day, '39 / Smooth'

Everyone’s gotta start somewhere, and Green Day were still a ways away from being the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-caliber band you know today in 1990. 39/Smooth is a bit uneven, though tracks like “Going to Pasalacqua” and “Disappearing Boy” show the promise of what was to come. It’s also the band’s lone record featuring original drummer John Kiffmeyer.
