HAPPY ZOMBIE UNICORN
Well that sucks if that’s what happened. How to turn something into shit through poor management.
Beerjeezus
The issue wouldn't be that they were trying to use the event for their PR, it would have helped the other bands too. Could be just poor management but if screwing the punk bands over was the plan, it's just trashy.

If you approach an underground scene (also a pretty hardcore one judging by what I saw at the time of the Danny’s video), you have to move very carefully. I guess they stepped on some shit and really pissed them off. The whole Billie playing in acoustic thing seems weird and I would like to hear the other side of the story, but the rest about Crush trying to make the show a “GD event” excluding these kids from the organization, pushing sponsors and shit seems very plausible, and an example of poor management. Just organize a free concert in the middle of nowhere, in a street, backyard or whatever, invite these dudes, invite the dude that organized the Wacko concert, give them visibility. It’s not that hard, doesn’t cost more than sponsoring a video on YouTube, and you avoid all this shit.

They could have just reached out to them and organized the show, no need for the money swinging (from the beginning) and especially the sponsors. I can see that Crush has a thing with sponsorships, but considering they were trying to get together with punk bands, it was extremely in a bad taste.

Billie loves to play small shows and this sort of shit, I mean look at the Coverups, block parties and so on. Of course that doesn’t make them part of the SoCal underground scene, more the Oakland small business scene. But I think it might even have been a sincere desire from the band to “get in touch” with the donation to the scene. It’s just sad if this works when the guys do shit on their own, but once it touches the GD world and the industry management dynamics turn into shit. I don’t think the guys are that stupid to not understand this is not the way you deal with kids.

The band themselves may not be this blind and they probably mean well, it's clear Billie loves playing small shows and it's not something he does for profit or good press, but the management clearly misunderstands how this works. If their plan was to do a "punk" show with a corporate sponsorship, I'm glad the bands were reasonable enough to say no, because it would have been the saddest thing ever.

Popular Post Beyza
I see them as a band that always gets stuck between the two worlds. One of them that underground scene with all these Gilman/DIY culture and the other one with full of sponsorships and commercial stuff. I think they have always been in that dilemma as a bad. There are people complaining about too much sponsorship in that era. It doesn’t bother me. They’ve always been a band like that after all imo but for example they played that small club after iHeart and shared photos from there. They always know how to balance those things and kept trying to make it work but sometimes could be a hard situation for them I guess.

They always know how to balance those things and kept trying to work it well but sometimes could be a hard situation for them I guess. And it also comes to the fact that they have a management team because when you are this kind of band you can’t manage things on your own, you are too busy answering stupid questions in lame interviews and preparing for a world tour, it’s part of the game. And someone can fuck it up sometimes. I mean it’s either retiring from the pop scene, which doesn’t seem what the band want to do at this point of their career (for good reasons IMHO), or as you said handling the balance as better as you can. Next time I would use someone that knows how to deal with this kind of shit, or just not do that and simply organize a show at the Golden Bull.
Beerjeezus
It seems to me they want to eat the cake and also keep it. It's understandable that they wanted to make the most out of their career, but they never fully embraced the commercial aspects of it or I don't know, maybe never got the right balance (?). On one hand there's the incredibly cool stuff like the side projects and on the other hand there are cringewrothy promo efforts like trying to use actual punk bands for their publicity and having the event sponsored. It's like the way they're marketed goes against what they try to enact as their values. And I don't know what's the solution for it, but I just can't imagine them playing with DIY bands. Last night I went to a FNB benefit show and idk how I'd feel if Green Day appeared at a place like this. With their status, it'd be kind of out of place/hard to believe it's sincere.

To me this is a situation like Billie: oh these kids are cool, check if we can do something with them Crush: Yeah let me fuck this up for you I think it would have been cool if it worked out, of course it would have been promotional, but there are ways to make that kind of promotion look and to a certain extent be sincere. If you don’t fuck it up.
Popular Post pacejunkie punk
They’re in a tough situation for sure but it’s been that way since 1994 and for the most part I think they balance it pretty well. Few bands at their level still do the kinds of small things they do and they do it to stay grounded. The trouble is when there’s logistics involved in organizing an event with other bands you have to bring in management and they’re looking at the big picture when it’s in the middle of a promotion cycle. The management isn’t going to spend much time on something that doesn’t earn them or the band any profit or big media attention. This is the kind of thing GD would have to decide to work out for themselves which in a down time they might, but they’re too busy right now. Everything has to be tied in with the album and tour. Not only that but a lot of the time I suspect it’s only Billie that is jazzed to do these things, play at Denny’s, do DIY punk shows... and Mike and Tre just don’t have that level of desire. Hence why it may have devolved to Billie on acoustic only.

He could take Jason with him and it'd be great.
Beyza
The band deleted the post from their IG but some other page reposted it and I saw they commented there I think it’s something you may not fully understand if you’re not actually in it but still, I find their situation sad cause I believe they or Billie are actually genuine about it and always want to feel connected to where they come from but obviously not everything in their hands or like in an ideal world. 3
