tomdsjames
I don't know if this is worthy of its own thread or not so just posting it here instead. Just to give some background first as not sure if this got much publicity in the States. Back in 2009, a group was started on Facebook because people were fed up with X Factor (the UK version of American Idol) being Christmas Number 1 every year. There was no longer any excitement leading up to Christmas about who would get the number 1 spot as it had just become a given that it would be X Factor, so a group was started to get 'Killing in the Name' by Rage Against The Machine to number 1 instead by getting as many people as possible to download it the week before Christmas. Against all odds, the campaign was successful and RATM became Christmas 2009 number 1. Back to the purpose of this post. There are a lot of people in the UK at the moment who are unhappy with Trumps views on immigrants and women, and especially his recent Muslim ban. A petition has recently garnered over 1.2 million signatures already to prevent Trump from having State Visits (not to be confused with banning him from entering the country as a head of government). Obviously the UK government are not going to agree to this, as it's just foolish to turn on our biggest ally following Brexit (but don't get me started on that 😂). As a result, a new page has been created, campaigning to get American Idiot to number 1 in the UK during Trump's state visit. Link here. The page is already gathering followers more quickly than the RATM page did, so I was interested to see your guys opinions on it. Despite having 3 number 1 albums, if successful this would be Green Day's first number 1 song over here. JUST FOR THE RECORD - I did not create this page, I just thought it was something worthy of discussion on a Green Day forum

Judging by the comments on the page, it's just trying to gather support at the moment. Once the dates of the visit are confirmed, they can let everybody know when to purchase/stream the song. Hero_Of_The_Hour
You're all going to love this one http://nypost.com/2017/01/30/what-the-poser-punks-of-green-day-can-learn-from-the-sex-pistols/ What the poser punks of Green Day can learn from the Sex Pistols The reports of punk rock’s resurrection are greatly exaggerated. “The Trump Administration May Be The Best Thing For The Punk Scene,” blares a BuzzFeed headline. “Trump makes political music great again,” says Agence France-Presse. If only. The AFP story treats a familiar pop whinery as the avatar of “punk”: “Green Day chanted ‘No Trump! No KKK! No Fascist USA!’ while performing at the nationally televised American Music Awards in November — refreshing a punk slogan which has since been embraced by anti-Trump demonstrators.” Ah yes, Green Day. The mass-market teenybopper posers of “punk.” Nothing better represents the impoverishment of modern rock than the obsession with making Green Day into some kind of spokesband for punk’s spirit of rebellion. And nothing better illustrates modern “punk’s” ignorance of its own history...

This article is written with a very catty, sarcastic attitude. Very negative. 2. Green Day don't consider themselves punks. 3. The Sex Pistols were a manufactured band put together by a producer; much like the Back Street Boys. Did they even write their own music? At least Green day is a "real" band.

Find me a quote from Billie Joe since October 2016 then saying that he doesn't consider them to be punk anymore since the interview I posted explaining why he hates the phrase pop punk "because you are either punk or not" indicated that he clearly considered them to be punk as of last October. Popular Post The Grohl
Also, I love how when people want to throw the Green Day isn't punk argument around the first band they compare them to is the Sex Pistols. Yeah, because John Lydon is very punk rock doing I can't believe it's not butter commericals, if we're gonna get that petty. Personally, I don't care what they call themselves. I still love their music

I think they say it in that broad way to keep things simple and give themselves freedom rather than obsessing about being defined as a certain thing and putting themselves in a box musically. Doesn't mean they don't also consider themselves punk - rock or rock n roll includes punk, and also the definition of punk they subscribe to especially is about attitude and standing for certain things rather than just the sound of the music.
desertrose
Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time 193. Green Day, 'Dookie' The album that jump-started the Nineties punk-pop revival. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong boiled suburban boredom into airtight, three-minute shots like "Welcome to Paradise," "Basket Case" and the infectious smash "Longview" – which Armstrong described as "cheap self-therapy from watching too much TV." 225. Green Day, 'American Idiot' The Nineties' irrepressible punk brats grew up with a bang, proving they could take on the kind of gargantuan old-school concept album that nobody else seemed to have the guts to try anymore. Billie Joe Armstrong raged against the political complacency of Bush-era America with ferocity and a Who-size sense of grandeur. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/500-greatest-albums-of-all-time-20120531/bruce-springsteen-nebraska-20120524
desertrose
Chatting w/ the new @GreenDay guitarist from #Live105NSSN, There was plenty of buzz from Not So Silent Night 2016 about Green Day’s performance, including the fan who was pulled on stage to play guitar with Billie Joe Armstrong. That ginger haired 13 year old was on Kevin Klein Live this morning for an exclusive interview about this twice in a life time experience for him and it was probably not one of the wordiest interviews Kevin and Ally have done. Pretty sure nearly 70% of his answers were “yeah” or “uh-huh”. Hopefully public speaking isn’t in this kid’s goals in life because he has a long way to go. http://live105.cbslocal.com/2016/12/13/kevin-klein-live-half-off-podcast-12-13-16/
desertrose
Green Day star Tré Cool visits Manchester's cat cafe before arena concert The drummer rocked up to the Northern Quarter venue this weekend ahead of the band's Manchester Arena show last night He might be all punk rock rebellion on stage, but out of the spotlight Green Day drummer Tré Cool is just a big softie. The musician took some time out from his hectic touring schedule this weekend to pay a surprise visit to Manchester's cat cafe with wife Sara Rose ahead of the band's Manchester Arena show last night. The couple played with Norwegian forest cat Ygritte and posed for pictures with staff and customers before meeting the Northern Quarter cafe's two newest residents - Siamese kitten Stanley and Ragamuffin kitten Hugo. Posting a picture of the encounter on Instagram, Tré wrote: "Thanks Manchester! We love coming here! I recommend a visit to the Cat Cafe. These kitties will melt your heart!
