Studio Talk: Tricks of the Trade

Let’s not forget the importance of guitars. Mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge has a funny story about one of his prized Gibson acoustics and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. “In Green Day’s ‘21 Guns’ video, Billie Joe Armstrong is playing my Gibson acoustic,” Lord-Alge told Gibson.com. “It was a prototype Gibson made that was given to me, and he liked it so much that I gave it to him, and Gibson made a signature acoustic of it. I begged him to give me one, and he never did! I have a ’56 Custom in black, the Les Paul Jr. from Billie Joe Armstrong and the Limited Edition Gary Rossington Les Paul.”

If anyone, Rolling Stone would probably be the one with an exclusive.

The 50 Greatest Album Covers of All Time

50. Green Day, 'American Idiot' (2004)

Like the album itself, the art for 2004’s American Idiot is hardly subtle. A heart-shaped hand grenade, bleeding and designed to mimic Communist propaganda, was an integral part of Green Day’s angsty tribute to the nation’s post-9/11 political turmoil.

Some good picks but a bit of a patchy list. I think the American Idiot cover should be higher than a lot of those, although they might've made it number 50 rather than some random number so that a very recognisable one was first on the list.

I do not agree with most of these at all. The Clash's London Calling should at least be in the top 5 as well.

Two random things here:

1) Rolling Stone has a feature about twenty one pilots and there's this part in the interview with drummer Josh Dun:

"Things were even stricter at the Dun household. Video games and most rock or hip-hop albums were banned. "I'd hide albums like Green Day's Dookie under my bed," Dun says. "Sometimes they'd find them and get real mad. They'd find a Christian alternative, like Relient K, and make me listen to that." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/twenty-one-pilots-inside-the-biggest-new-band-of-the-past-year-20160114?page=2

2) The Beck Center for the Arts which is located in Lakewood, OH (where I live) put on a performance of American Idiot in 2015. I received a letter in the mail that thanked me for attending the Beck Center this past year that read:

"Than you for visiting us this summer to see Green Day's American Idiot! It was a thrilling and challenging show to produce but drew both subscribers and new audience members, like you, to Beck Center"

"Green Day's American Idiot attracted our greatest number of new attendees to a Beck Center performace ever (883 to be exact) - thank you for being a part of that!"

Is this new?? I know it's from the mtv performance in Chicago in 1994 but has it ever been released as an LP before?

It hasn't but it's just another bootleg. Pretty cool though, I'm considering buying it myself.

According to Wikipedia Billie and Mike formed sweet children in 1986. They must be using that. Which is stupid because it's still not 30 years of "Green Day"

According to Green Day themselves they formed in 1988. Larry Livermore also uses 1988 as Green Day's formation year.
