desertrose
Soundtrack of a storm: The most poignant musical moments after Hurricane KatrinaU2 and Green Day, "The Saints Are Coming," Sept. 25, 2006I literally could not have been further away when the reborn Superdome reopened for a Monday night football game between the Saints and Falcons. I was in Melbourne, Australia, where, at kickoff, it was already late morning on Tuesday. The only place I could find a live broadcast of the game was at a casino in downtown Melbourne. But in the pre-game celebration, as U2 and Green Day, in cahoots with Trombone Shorty and the Rebirth and New Birth brass bands, channeled all the joy and defiance of that night, the impact literally resonated around the world. The live recording of "The Saints Are Coming" from that game still gives me chills.http://www.nola.com/katrina/index.ssf/2015/08/hurricane_katrina_music.html MTV VMAs: Every Video of the Year Nominee, Ranked133. *Green Day, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (Samuel Bayer, 2005)Green Day finally took home the top prize for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (133), their dullest video ever,89. That album that has generated so much fandom for Green Day really spoke to post-9/11 American youth because we were being inundated with images of good vs. evil, we’re rights and they’re wrongs. It was like Nuclear Santa Claust playing in front of 13-year-old kids. Then, Emily’s Army gets up to play, and they all take off their shirts off for the show. [Pause] I don’t know why. [Laughs] They have their guitar cases lined up on the basement floor so they could have a barrier between them and their fans. And I ran up just before they were getting ready to play—I got permission from the house, but not from the guy booking the show—Joe Steinhardt from Don Giovanni, although I am not sure he would even remember or put it together, because I was just in character yelling at him. So I went up there and I was just like, “Hey guys, before this show starts, I want to do some spoken word poetry.” And I just did the dumbest thing from stuff I had just pieced together from rants I had heard kids in college talk about. It was really dumb, but the kids were in to it. One of the parents came up to me after and was like, “Hey, I work a 9 to 5 job. WorryRock02
23 Massive Artists Who You Won't Believe Never Had A Number One SingleGreen Day: Maybe it's because there are probably three Green Day hoodies sold to every vinyl, but for whatever reason, Billie Joe Armstrong's pop punk troupe's UK chart career peak was a Number Three with 'American Idiot' in 2004. (Jason Andrew Relva)”, a song written by bassist Mike Dirnt about his friend who died in a car accident when he was 19. This song peaked at number one on the Modern Rock Billboard charts of 1995. This song was later released on their 2001 greatest hits album, International Superhits. Meanwhile, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong co-produced “Back to You” by the Riverdales with producer Mass Giorgini, which was featured during the dance sequence at the high prom in the film. The music supervisors for Angus were Elliot Cahn and Jeff Saltzman, who, at the time, also managed two of the soundtrack’s artists: Green Day and The Muffs. http://newnoisemagazine.com/angus-soundtrack-celebrates-20-year-anniversary-with-first-ever-vinyl-release/ For a younger generation, some combination of Green Day, The Offspring, Rancid, blink-182 and New Found Glory (or all of the above) was a foundational listening experience, and an entry point into alternative music. Those bands may have made punk more mainstream, but they were also gateways to older and more universally canonized artists. blink-182 directly led to Descendents, Dinosaur Jr and Drive Like Jehu; Green Day to Husker Du; Rancid to Roger Miret and Sham 69; New Found Glory to Lifetimeand Gorilla Biscuits; and so on. The people who grew up on those bands are becoming today's indie rock musicians, fans, and critics, so it makes sense that the sounds of pop punk are making their way into indie rock. Not to mention Best Coast, who started as a lo-fi band on Mexican Summer, went on to cover blink-182, collaborate with New Found Glory, and tour with Green Day.http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2015/09/pop_punks_compl.html The Top 10 Concept Albums of All Time09. desertrose
Throwback Thursday: Green Day Take the Late Night TV Stage in 1994 Is it just me, or did Billie Joe Armstrong look cooler with blonde hair?Today’s Throwback Thursday comes from a simpler time in pop punk mavens Green Day‘s history. Their third album, Dookie, was a smash hit, and they were on their way to the top.So, Green Day stopped by Late Show With David Letterman back in 1994 to play a bit of extra-loud punk rock. They performed a little tune they called “Basket Case,” an upbeat number about living a joyful life full of contentment and stability. Nah, I’m just kidding. It’s about being a nut job on drugs. (But really, that’s much more interesting than a rock song about how cool life is, right?)Green Day, of course, would become one of the biggest rock bands in the world while injecting some new life into punk rock in the 21st century. From hitting Broadway with their American Idiot musical to being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, those California boys did okay for themselves. And hopefully, they’ll continue making waves in 2015: Could a new album be on the horizon? http://diffuser.fm/throwback-thursday-green-day-letterman-1994/
