Soundtrack of a storm: The most poignant musical moments after Hurricane Katrina

U2 and Green Day, "The Saints Are Coming," Sept. 25, 2006

I literally could not have been further away when the reborn Superdome reopened for a Monday night football game between the Saints and Falcons. I was in Melbourne, Australia, where, at kickoff, it was already late morning on Tuesday. The only place I could find a live broadcast of the game was at a casino in downtown Melbourne. But in the pre-game celebration, as U2 and Green Day, in cahoots with Trombone Shorty and the Rebirth and New Birth brass bands, channeled all the joy and defiance of that night, the impact literally resonated around the world. The live recording of "The Saints Are Coming" from that game still gives me chills.

The band Green Day has played at the Brahmin temple-inspired Fox, and bassist Mike Dirnt opened his second Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe on its ground floor.

Creating a Creative Sanctuary

The next day, prior to our scheduled Pixar visit, we had lunch at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe, co-owned by Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt. Any place named after a Clash song is okay in my book. Menu favorite: the Shakin' Jesse Milkshake, made with Guinness and espresso.

TEEN ANGST, ADULT PROBLEMS: ZAC CARPER FROM FIDLAR GROWS UP

Carper: .... The only thing we had was actually radio, so I grew up on Green Day and blink-182. Like I didn’t listen to Black Flag until I was 21.

Oh shit.
Calder: I had no idea who they were. I had no idea. Growing up in Hawaii nobody gave a shit about that kind of stuff. And where I grew up mainly it was Green Day, blink-182, Sublime. I listened to the stuff that was on the radio because was all I could get.  http://noisey.vice.com/blog/fidlar-interview-2015

Reading & Leeds Festival is one of the UK oldest and most loved. The likes of Metallica, Arctic Monkeys, Green Day, Kasabian, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and just about every other big band from the last 20 years. http://www.xfm.co.uk/games-quizzes/play-the-ultimate-reading-leeds-festival-quiz/

“American Idiot” a “quintessential angry-young-man piece” for the 2000s, comparing it to earlier rabble-rousing musicals like “Rent” and “Hair.”

“Those plays remain with us because there’s always that period of your life where you kind of figure out where you’re going and how it relates to where everyone else has gone before you,” he said. “It’s specifically dealing with a post-9/11 America. That album that has generated so much fandom for Green Day really spoke to post-9/11 American youth because we were being inundated with images of good vs. evil, we’re rights and they’re wrongs. I think people at that age realized it that it was more nuanced than that … and those kids didn’t want to be pawns in a larger game.” http://newsok.com/article/5442958

Ragas to Rock: The Indian Influence on Western Music.

Extraordinary Girl: The insanely popular rock opera, American Idiot, was released by Green Day in 2004 amidst the Bush regime and the war tension in Iraq. One of the songs in the album is Extraordinary Girl, which has a heavy Indian influence and features tabla.

10 BEST POP-PUNK SONGS OF ALL TIME

One of the best songs off of one of the best rock albums of all time, “Longview” is a classic on every level. Although Green Day’s legacy has been somewhat tarnished by the last decade of their existence, let’s not forget that they were arguably the best punk of the decade-ish before that. Maybe if Green Day went back to writing songs about being bored and high, they’d be able to recapture their youth.

Just a reminder, when posting here could you make sure to include a few words to describe the article/how it relates to Green Day rather than just posting a link please (makes it easier for people browsing the thread to see which articles they want to click on).

On the article, any band praising both Green Day and Muse gets approval points from me :D

Never seen a member of Green Day with hair remotely like that. Maybe that's why he looks like he was rejected.

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong returns to the theatre with These Paper Bullets! at the Atlantic Theater Company. The show, beginning Nov. 20, is a "modish rip-off" of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, telling the story of the Quartos: “Their fans worship them. Scotland Yard fears them. And their former drummer will stop at nothing to destroy them.” Rolin Jones is the co-author. -

7 Songs For the First Day of Classes To Get You Ready For Another Tumultuous School Year

Noisey: Where did the idea for Craig come from?
Brett Davis: I was living in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and I was seeing a lot of the “rich kid slumming it as a punk kid,” I was just seeing that type of guy a lot. I thought it was really funny. And just the whole people in punk not really having a sense of humor about things. I kind of wanted to parody all of that. The thing that kind of started it was that my friend’s house was always a spot where just friends’ bands would play. Occasionally, a bigger touring act would come in, and this band called Emily’s Army got booked. Emily’s Army featured the son of Billie Joe Armstrong, and for some reason, they were huge with the tween community, and we got all these 14-, 15-, and 16-year-old kids showing up with their parents. So I rushed and grabbed whatever punk costume, because I wanted to dress like it was my first punk show too. So my friend gave me this Limp Wrist shirt and she was like, “Hey, you’ll find a use for this some day,” and I grabbed this like Beatles wig, I just fucked it.

So my friend gave me this Limp Wrist shirt and she was like, “Hey, you’ll find a use for this some day,” and I grabbed this like Beatles wig, I just fucked it.

So I went to the show, and it was great. It was like Nuclear Santa Claust playing in front of 13-year-old kids. Then, Emily’s Army gets up to play, and they all take off their shirts off for the show. [Pause] I don’t know why. [Laughs] They have their guitar cases lined up on the basement floor so they could have a barrier between them and their fans. And I ran up just before they were getting ready to play—I got permission from the house, but not from the guy booking the show—Joe Steinhardt from Don Giovanni, although I am not sure he would even remember or put it together, because I was just in character yelling at him. So I went up there and I was just like, “Hey guys, before this show starts, I want to do some spoken word poetry.” And I just did the dumbest thing from stuff I had just pieced together from rants I had heard kids in college talk about. It was really dumb, but the kids were in to it. One of the parents came up to me after and was like, “Hey, I work a 9 to 5 job. I am one of those corporate drones, and I needed to hear that.” And Billie Joe’s son came up to me after and was like, “That was pretty rad,” and I was like, “You needed to hear that most of all.” http://noisey.vice.com/blog/brett-davis-interview

He also spoke about how Green Day frontman Bille Joe Armstrong had helped him to kick his heroin addiction, however. Discussing an hour-long phone call in which Armstrong had encouraged him to stay clean, he stated: "I probably wouldn’t be sober today if Billie Joe didn’t call. He really helped me when no-one else was there."

23 Massive Artists Who You Won't Believe Never Had A Number One SingleGreen Day: Maybe it's because there are probably three Green Day hoodies sold to every vinyl, but for whatever reason, Billie Joe Armstrong's pop punk troupe's UK chart career peak was a Number Three with 'American Idiot' in 2004. The British public - what a bunch of basket cases. http://www.nme.com/photos/23-massive-artists-who-you-wont-believe-never-had-a-number-one-single/387012

Angus Soundtrack Celebrates 20 Year Anniversary With First Ever Vinyl Release - Green Day contributed “J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)”, a song written by bassist Mike Dirnt about his friend who died in a car accident when he was 19. This song peaked at number one on the Modern Rock Billboard charts of 1995. This song was later released on their 2001 greatest hits album, International Superhits. Meanwhile, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong co-produced “Back to You” by the Riverdales with producer Mass Giorgini, which was featured during the dance sequence at the high prom in the film. The music supervisors for Angus were Elliot Cahn and Jeff Saltzman, who, at the time, also managed two of the soundtrack’s artists: Green Day and The Muffs. http://newnoisemagazine.com/angus-soundtrack-celebrates-20-year-anniversary-with-first-ever-vinyl-release/

For a younger generation, some combination of Green Day, The Offspring, Rancid, blink-182 and New Found Glory (or all of the above) was a foundational listening experience, and an entry point into alternative music. Those bands may have made punk more mainstream, but they were also gateways to older and more universally canonized artists. blink-182 directly led to Descendents, Dinosaur Jr and Drive Like Jehu; Green Day to Husker Du; Rancid to Roger Miret and Sham 69; New Found Glory to Lifetimeand Gorilla Biscuits; and so on. The people who grew up on those bands are becoming today's indie rock musicians, fans, and critics, so it makes sense that the sounds of pop punk are making their way into indie rock. Not to mention Best Coast, who started as a lo-fi band on Mexican Summer, went on to cover blink-182collaborate with New Found Glory, and tour with Green Day.

The Top 10 Concept Albums of All Time

09. Green Day, American Idiot It has characters with names like St. Jimmy, Jesus of Suburbia and Whatsername, but that’s not the important part. This streetwise 1984 rails against all that’s wrong with the current American social and political climate. Funny that such angry content should return the concept album to the hit parade. http://screamingguitars.com/the-top-10-concept-albums-of-all-time/

Throwback Thursday: Green Day Take the Late Night TV Stage in 1994

Is it just me, or did Billie Joe Armstrong look cooler with blonde hair?

Today’s Throwback Thursday comes from a simpler time in pop punk mavens Green Day‘s history. Their third album, Dookie, was a smash hit, and they were on their way to the top.

So, Green Day stopped by Late Show With David Letterman back in 1994 to play a bit of extra-loud punk rock. They performed a little tune they called “Basket Case,” an upbeat number about living a joyful life full of contentment and stability. Nah, I’m just kidding. It’s about being a nut job on drugs. (But really, that’s much more interesting than a rock song about how cool life is, right?)

Green Day, of course, would become one of the biggest rock bands in the world while injecting some new life into punk rock in the 21st century. From hitting Broadway with their American Idiot musical to being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, those California boys did okay for themselves.

And hopefully, they’ll continue making waves in 2015: Could a new album be on the horizon?
