Top Ten: Ten songs for Mother's Day

"She" - Green Day. "She .. She screams in silence" .. She screams in silence, and his is a silent rage. Of course it's hard to imagine a mother who cries in silence, but a mother sometimes does that too: suffering for us in the deepest place of his heart.

Celebrate (or reviled) mother in word and song

Mother's Day, the feast of the flowers and greeting cards market. But also a boon for the light song. Because as you and I when choosing a bouquet, so overzealous many songwriters themselves in forging their songs because they Mummy a warm heart. Or just not. 'You stupid, sadistic, abusive fucking whore ... get ready to die! " The many types and sizes of mama songs.

They fall for bad boys

"Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman of Green Day, made his fourteenth otherwise similar family assessment with Why Do You Want Him?" I saw you standing alone / With a sad look on your face / You call him on the phone / Looks like he left you / Without a Trace. "

Exactly!! Why are there so many Green Day songs/ Billie lyrics that the entire world has decided are written about a topic/person they simply aren't...even if Billie has said otherwise. Grr. Stop it stupid people m'kay?

They could've at least used In The End, seeing as it is.

The beauty of the written word is in multiple interpretations.

Also, there should be a thread for actual news and one for "nonsense and poor journalism". Getting a bit tired from every single Google alert being worth a post in this thread.

Yeah but that particular interpretation is based on the incorrect info that's out there that Billie has said the song was about his mum's relationship, when in fact he's said it wasn't, rather than from just listening to the lyrics and interpreting them.

The idea is for actual news to get its own thread and for this thread to be for "random news", small and inconsequential things. I try to split things that I notice should really have their own thread from here when I notice them. But really everyone should feel free to make a new thread for anything that isn't totally tiny and not worth it, this isn't supposed to be a catch all for every piece of news, article etc. You can make a new thread for any new piece of news or article that you think is interesting, whether you found it yourself and are deciding where to post it or you saw it already mentioned in this thread. I tried to emphasize this in the OP but still people persist in trying to post everything here unfortunately :P

The beauty of the written word is in multiple interpretations.

So I can interpet Fuck Time to be about wrestling? "I want to choke you 'till you're blue in the face". Lol. Poetry and books etc are great for going wild with one's own interpretations but if a songwriter explains the meaning of their song then that's that... there is no point in people deciding to change that meaning because they don't like it or have a better idea lol. Billie has said the song is not about his mom and step father so then that's the end of the story. The same goes for when lyrics are blatently obviously about something (perhaps not something favourable to fans like during the trilogy era with drugs or lyrics that hinted at affairs etc). What's the point in Billie saying anything if nobody listens anyway.

I do disagree with journalists/fans/whatever stating incorrect meanings/personal interpretations as fact, it's not fair to the songwriter. I don't think there's anything wrong with having your own personal interpretation(s) of a song otherwise, though, and the meaning can change over time or it can have multiple meanings to the songwriter, too. Good Riddance is a good example, like it was originally a fuck you song but they often play it at the end of shows.

Yeah, like if you just heard the lyrics of Why Do You Want Him and were thinking what they might be about then them being about parent's relationship would be a reasonable way to interpret them. But when the whole idea of them being about that comes from false reports that Billie's said they're about that (probably got mixed up with In The End), and he's since said that isn't the case, then not so much. No harm in just thinking of them as relating to a parent's relationship in a general sense if that's an interesting/meaningful way of looking at them to you (rather than claiming that's actually what he wrote them about) though.

This one is so good...

Man, they really ruined the trilogy by recording it the way they did. Everything from the Echoplex sounds so good. :(

Are media creating the 'American Idiot'?

*Cue Green Day song American Idiot* “We are one nation controlled by the media.” We have two choices. We can either use that to our advantage, or let it destroy our society by convincing us that we should suck our lips into a shot glass in order to have big, beautiful lips like Kylie Jenner. From the skewed politics on news channels and the internet to the celebrities causing America’s youth to follow viral trends, the media is helping us to create the “American Idiot”. Let’s stop the degradation and be “American Intellects” rather than “American Idiots”.

Ha, my newspaper's company (Sandusky Newspapers Inc.) owns this newspaper. That's funny. Especially since this is such a terribly written column.

Doesn't take away from the fact that the studio version is shit.
