Tom Felton Q&A: talks favourites, motto, relationships, style, likes, more

First record you bought? Green Day’s Dookie. I’m pretty sure I stole it from my brother rather than buying it, though.

12 times the Grammys got it wrong

Great Grammy Blunders

Tony Bennett wins Album of the Year (1995): Nice guy, great voice. But did Bennett really deserve the the top prize for another run through the American Songbook (again for "MTV Unplugged")? Not when the award could have gone to era-defining classics such as Green Day's "Dookie," Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral," Hole's "Live Through This," Jeff Buckley's "Grace" or Soundgarden's "Superunknown." None of the above, incidentally, was even nominated.

They're not really secret identities, just other things they do. Also they forgot The Frustrators and the Influents.

This is in this months copy of Guitar World

The 25 Greatest Acoustic Songs In Hard Rock

"GOOD RIDDANCE (TIME OF YOUR LIFE)," GREEN DAY
Nimrod (1997)

When recording what would be the album version of this acoustic ballad, Green Day leader Billie Joe Armstrong flubbed the opening G/D chord - twice - and after the second time deadpanned, "Fuck."

Fortunately, he soldiered on, and, despite the uttered expletive, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" enjoyed huge crossover success and stands as the band's biggest hit to date. Which was hardly anticipated.

At the time, Green Day were considered little more than snot-nosed, albeit multi-Platinum, Bay Area ruffians, and an acoustic guitar-and-strings ballad wasn't what most people expected to hear from them. For that reason bassist Mike Dirnt called the song the "most punk" thing they could have done. Which just goes to show that even punks can wear their hearts on their sleeves.

I'd count WMUWSE in there too.

Also, since when were they hard rock?

I think it was their longest on chart song. I believe it was 43 weeks. It also crossed over to different charts, such as the Adult contemporary chart and was used for various proms, graduations, etc. It was also used in a multitude of TV shows, movies and even when Mark McGwire broke the home run record. It is definitely one of their most memorable hits. But, if you are going by record sales, they have 3 certified platinum songs, Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends and 21 Guns. So I guess it really depends on what your definition of their biggest hit is.

Oh I'm not saying its not memorable or even a hit as it is but for a song that never hit #1 in ANY chart it's not a huge hit (industry wise)

Disagree. Just because it did not hit # 1 does not mean it was not a big hit. I made a mistake before, it is certified platinum, sold 2.6 M copies. It reached #2 on Modern Rock Charts, plus several other charts. I believe it was on some form of chart for 43 weeks. That is a pretty big hit, even if it did not hit # 1. It may not be their biggest hit ever, but that is really based on what your definition is. If you are looking at chart position, no. Record sales, maybe, would have to look that up. If you are looking at most memorable, its right up there.

For singles labels look at radio charts Guitar World is incorrect with calling it their biggest hit as its not

I'm not disputing that it's not memorable or even that it's not a huge hit but I'm disputing that it's their biggest hit because it's not

Boulevard of Broken Dreams is their biggest hit to date. It is followed by When I Come Around, Minority, Longview, Basketcase, American Idiot, Holiday, Know Your Enemy, the Saints are Coming and and JAR. That is all of their Number One's.

Green Day mentioned here http://music.blog.ajc.com/2015/02/18/daryl-hall-and-john-oates-talk-dublin-concert-movie-touring-and-set-lists/

Emily Whitehurst q&a

Was there a band you heard when you were young that inspired you to become a musician?

When I first heard Green Day, I had never heard anything like it. I went nuts! I was obsessively pop punk after that. I didn’t know how to go about it, but I knew I had to be part of this music.

JAR was HUGE! I was only a few years old around the time it came out so I didn't experience it first-hand but from what I've seen and gathered over the years, JAR was really big. And the reason? It was the first release after Dookie.

It was not huge in Europe at all, to the point that I didn't have a chance to hear the song until Shenanigans came out seven years later. I heard a couple of seconds of it when Angus was advertised on TV and that was it.
