The guy hates guns so I really don't get why he chooses a really crap gun metaphor in a love song as what it could represent for someone who isn't terrified of them. It's not like the English language is that limited.

It makes no difference if he hates guns. One word or object can represent multiple different things. Sorry but it's ridiculous to suggest he can't reference something just because he doesn't like it. He probably doesn't like being told "fuck you!" either but that doesn't mean he can't reference it in a different context.

This video (or something similar) would have fit some of the Dos songs really well. Like Wild One, Baby Eyes or especially Wow! That's Loud.

Did I say he "can't reference something because he doesn't like it"?! :ermm: Of course I didn't say that. He references guns in loads of songs. It's this particular metaphor and the interpretation which was on the previous page which suggested he would feel empowered by a gun, respect and flaunt it which I think is dumb. Feel free to think otherwise.

Sorry but this makes absolutely no sense to me. Billie Joe Armstrong, absolute hater of guns who wants to melt them all down would respect and flaunt a gun and feel empowered by it??!! He implicitly said in the clip I posted on the previous page that he is terrified of guns, hates them and thinks they should all be destroyed.

I never said that Billie Joe would respect and flaunt a gun and feel empowered by it - I'm saying many people do.  That, in itself, is enough for him to use it as a simile.  Similes are not meant to be taken literally, they are used to convey an idea, which he does very well here.

 @pucky

He means he wants to hold her with care and respect, yet flaunt her - as he would do with a gun.

The only positive thing I can say about this album as a whole.

 the red makes me think of periods.

Huh

Maybe he should have said "as one would do with a gun" then :P. Doesn't have to apply to him irl for him to conjure up the image of a gun being treated that way (as it sometimes is) as a metaphor in the song.

It makes perfect sense. Holding a gun is a strange feeling, it's almost scary in fact. You need to have some kind of respect to it, it's a deadly weapon. You have to be careful with it even if you can use it well.

I don't believe based on Billies own words that he has anything but hatred for guns, certainly not respect but I wasn't debating the merit of the actual lyrics which I think are crap in this song anyway, just Second Favourite Sons interpretation.

Huh

I see what you've misunderstood:

  • Billie would never hold a gun
  • If Billie wanted to hold a gun, he would hold it like this

Two different uses of the word 'would' here, one expressing an alternative tense of 'will', the other clearly expressing the conditional.  Can't change how the English language works, sorry.

There's a lot of analysis going on with the lyrics considering they're "utter shit"

Are you kidding?!?! Would it be better if he said I want to hold you like a water pistol. I've never seen someone over analyze lyrics so much!

Fucking genius.

You don't have to like guns to feel a sense of respect around them.

Is Hero of the Hour a Seagull dupe account?

Obviously. Only one person could possibly dislike anything about a song or album by Green Day. GDC logic.
