I agree, it felt sort of all over the place like HLAHG did and it didn’t tell a compelling story clearly. They should have gone deeper into the interviews about where the band really was at the end of the Warning era, with a triumphant finish to where they ended up. They did that loosely but more interviews with the people involved like Rob Cavallo, Warner execs, etc. cut all the repeat footage from HLAHG and BIAB and for god’s sake give up on the story that the tapes were stolen and just tell the truth. Instead of “we had a lot of fun on tour”, show how they first wrote an okay album, their career was on the line, the label pushed them to do something better and with hard work and sacrifice (like two divorces and a DUI) they got there and succeeded. It’s an emotional story if they ever want to really tell it.7 points

There won't be a Trump album. Billie has been vocal about not wanting to write about him if he can help it. Of course it has inspired a few songs despite him saying that, but I doubt it will be a major influence. There certainly won't be any songs about him turning out to be great. Billie has felt this way about him for much longer than most people have been aware he exists. Personally I'd rather have more lost love songs than an anti-Trump album. It won't change anyone's opinion. What is there to say about Trump that hasn't already been said by a million different people on both sides, anyway? He's what he is. We all know that whether we like him or not.6 points

On this day last year (7 November 2023), Green Day played the Magazzini Generali in Milan, Italy on the Saviors Tour. More photos: 7 years ago (7 November 2017), Green Day played the Anfiteatro do Beira Rio in Porto Alegre, Brazil on the Revolution Radio Tour. More photos: 8 years ago (7 November 2016), the Still Breathing music video was released. This is one of Green Day's best videos. I love all the different storylines and how they're all connected despite being completely different, which was what Billie said he wanted to achieve with the song. And of course it's lovely to see the ending where Billie returns to the practice space and Mike and Tre are there waiting for him. 12 years ago (7 November 2012), the Stray Heart music video was released. That's one of my favourite songs but I admit I don't care about the video because the band aren't in it. 26 years ago (7 November 1998), Green Day played Via Funchal in São Paulo, Brazil on the Nimrod Tour. They were also interviewed there. More photos: 27 years ago (7 November 1997), Green Day played The Roxy in Atlanta, GA on the Nimrod Tour. 32 years ago (7 November 1992), Green Day played at 924 Gilman Street. 33 years ago (7 November 1991), Green Day played Kulturstation in Munich, Germany. 35 years ago (7 November 1989), Green Day played Komotion in San Francisco, CA.6 points

I just don’t think the music scene is in a place where new Green Day music can be successful. Saviors is fresh and catchy, the singles have all been modern-sounding and clear-wormy. Rock, especially an old rock band, just doesn’t sell anymore.4 points

The documentary definitely has its shortcomings. I also thought it would have more of a narrative and take us through the timeline of everything leading to American Idiot and beyond. But I still enjoyed all the fun bits we got especially things we didn't get on HLAHG and BIAB. Definitely feel like there was more they could've done, but I'm still happy with it. I had a good time watching it, whereas HLAG is decent....but then I remember the dance number in the beginning and I get mad all over again. Really disappointed that a disc was wasted on that.4 points
-
Am I the only one disappointed by the documentary? I had already watched HLAHG and I'm in no hurry to watch it again. I'm with @The Grohl on this, I would much have preferred they released a live show for the 2nd Blu Ray rather than HLAHG again. The new documentary is an improvement in comparison to HLAHG but still it could have been so much better. Both documentaries are basically just a collection of random behind the scenes and live performances. That makes a compilation, not a documentary. Lots of wasted potential in both.4 points

Sassafras Roots. It's probably my favorite song on the record, yet it's not mentioned a lot whenever there's Dookie conversation. Maybe I'm just a sucker for those pop melodies, but I love that song.3 points

How are the album equivalent units for streaming calculated? I ask because I wonder if part of the problem is that people don't listen to albums anymore? In general, people listen to singles now. Mashed up playlists in Spotify and so on. On the other hand you have their tour, which was their most successful most attended tour ever, as per some news article someone shared a few weeks ago. Or American Idiot anniversary boxset debuting quite high in the charts... Probably because again people just don't buy albums anymore. And yes, I agree with @DookieLukie's point too, that Rock just isn't popular anymore. Which is quite depressing, but it is what it is.3 points

What a perfect description you make of this brilliant album. GD have done it again. What a year 2024 had been one way and another for us GD fans. Yet I'm somewhat saddened and feel really really sorry for the band members, if greenday.fm/charts/album-sales/, are a true reflection of the listening public out there. Listed below are the estimated worldwide sales + streaming (album equivalent units) figures for Green Day’s albums along with the pure album sales (for releases prior to 2015) and any RIAA certifications they have been awarded for US sales. The worldwide sales + streaming overall total and individual studio albums totals are updated on the first and 15th of every month. Updated Nov 1. Saviors Sales + Streaming 252,000 Billboard (US) watch: Positive reviews from fans and critics didn’t equal out to much of a sales boost for Saviors over the bands previous morante divisive album, Father Of All. In it’s first week Saviors matched Father Of All‘s #4 Billboard 200 debut after selling 49,000 copies in the US, 1,000 more than it’s predecessors first week performance. Father Of All Motherfuckers Sales + Streaming 276,000 Billboard (US) watch: Despite generally favourable album reviews from critics, Father Of All had fans divided with the bands new direction which resulted in the worst first week sales total of their career on a major label. The album debuted on the Billboard charts at #4 selling 48,000 copies in the US which was almost half the first week sales of their previous album, Revolution Radio, which came out of the gate with 95,000. The album is by far the lowest selling of the bands career. How can this be. Undervalued comes to mind, or better still underappreciated, that is not valued highly enough. Where's the 1.3m who bought RevRad, or 6.5m 21st Cen, or 24m AI. I know musical tastes can change over time, but is punk rock no longer relevant? Surely not. And yet when you look at tickets available for live show, many venues are sold out. Proving that GD are still one of, if not, the most stunning, musically and visually, to watch live ever. And again I was so lucky to see them again this year, they were better than ever. I don't understand. Maybe it's me. All I can say is they don't know what they are missing. Their loss. Don't lose heart GD we love you, always. ❤️3 points

I know where you're coming from matey. I'm sorry, I don't know if they will release it on DVD or any other format any time soon. Luckily for me I had a birthday coming up before the release of the 20th anniversary box set. Many not-so-subtle hints and comments to family and friends on the enormous merits of investing in having a Blu-ray player over a DVD player, with much much higher quality. lol. The thing is, the main consideration was, how could my life go on without being able to play the documentary, not knowing what I was missing, shudder. Thankfully, surprise surprise, a shiny new Blu-ray player was one of my birthday presents. And it is getting well used watching this awesome doc over and over. A fitting end to another amazing year of being a GD fan. Brilliant Saviors album, seeing the band live four times, a new PG album, and now this AI anniversary set. Heaven on earth. Just to rub it in, here's the trailer. 😁 Somehow, some way, get your hands on a Blu-ray just to watch this doc, it'll be worth every penny. Good luck.3 points

Billboard chart update- Alternative Airplay: 8 (up from 11 ) Rock & Alternative Airplay: 7 (up from 8) Mainstream Rock Airplay: 11 (up from 13) Canada Rock- this chart seems to have disappeared. Comes up as a page 404 and isn't showing as an option under GD as an artist either.3 points

I am all for another anti-establishment, revolutionary punk-rock opera to be the voice of the teens (and not so teen too) who are sitting in their rooms right now going "what the actual fuck?" Doubt it's what we'll get. But doesn't change the fact that I'm ready for it2 points

That’s really sad. Yet the album got great reviews. And I hope the band realizes how much their fanbase likes Saviors…. We need more Saviors songs in their upcoming tour!2 points

Exactly! That would have been an amazing narrative and so interesting to watch. Or if they didn't want to make it so personal, they could have focused on the creative process. They could have also talked people through some of the demos, like the Homecoming one. What inspired them to do that, how they started piecing it together... how it evolved into the version that was released, same for JoS and Lowlife, how they came about to merge the two of them, etc. I can think of a few different angles they could have given the documentary to make it a cohesive story that would have been fantastic to watch and so valuable for any fan.2 points

"It was supposed to be a 'million band march.' It didn't quite make it to a million bands… a lot of my friends were getting thrown out of Downtown Rehearsal Studios, a place that bands had been practicing for years, because the new owners wanted to raise all the rents. That sort of hit home with me because it was about music and art, and it wasn't just that studio; every day you could read in the paper how it was getting worse and worse for musicians in San Francisco. Rents were skyrocketing, even to the point where clubs were having a hard time staying open. After a while it starts to piss you off, and I thought my band could at least help bring attention to the issue. It's funny, because there a guy who buys and sells property who hangs out at my mom's work, and he was telling her, 'Oh, your son doesn't understand.' Well, that’s obviously coming from someone who doesn't see the other side, that's never even been on the other side, that doesn’t know what it's like to be thrown out of where you live." — Billie Joe More photos: 26 years ago (5 November 1998), Green Day played the Ginásio Mineirinho in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on the Nimrod Tour. 27 years ago (5 November 1997), Green Day played the Embassy Music Hall in Orlando, FL on the Nimrod Tour. 29 years ago (5 November 1995), Green Day played the State Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg, PA on the Insomniac Tour. 33 years ago (5 November 1993), Green Day played in Mannheim, Germany. ---------------------------------- On this day 8 years ago (6 November 2016), Green Day played Bang Bang and American Idiot at the EMAs in Rotterdam. So according to a new interview in Music Connection, those seven extra songs from FOAM ended up on Saviors https://www.musicconnection.com/green-day-american-saviors/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1VPiOda1skdxhyjJzMYycP9-1OCGE0d1aFOIDpHf_I4Sf6mY3EnR8cMoE_aem_TfmCM_s5iKC_7GPSWFZJcg Quote: “But it mustn’t be forgotten that Green Day is promoting the Saviors album, a typically brilliant slab of work that is snotty, zany, and important in equal measure. Armstrong has said that there are seven songs on this record that didn’t make it onto the last one, the Butch Walker-produced Father of All Motherfuckers, making it all the more startling that this album is so good, that it flows so beautifully.” I remember they said TADIKM was from those sessions and they added it later. What do we think were the other six? And how on earth could those FOAM songs be so underwritten and mid and these Saviors songs are great? They don’t sound like they came from the same time period at all, unless he completely rewrote them later and made them all better2 points

Someone in my partner's work quit, which means he now has to fill in for them on a work trip to South Africa. To Cape Town. The same week Green Day is playing there. Good god, please give me the self control I need to be financially responsible and not tag along for this trip. Honestly since we found out about a year ago that he might be go on this trip to South Africa I wanted to tag along. And if he had been initially confirmed to make the trip I would have probably saved and planned for that, and then it would have been a happy coincidence that Green Day were there But like this it is so "last minute" that it just seems very unfeasible.1 point

I'm guessing that out of all of the demos AI Alt, Novacaine, Shes a Rebel, Clusterbomb, Just Another Year and Everyones Breaking Down all originate from C&V while the rest (including Lowlife) are all from the AI sessions1 point

Bataclan was, by far, the best gig I've ever been too. I'd told work colleagues I was going to try for a ticket and one kindly offered to cover my shift if I got one. Sent her a message that morning saying I'd tried and failed, but thanks for the offer. An hour later, decide to try my luck again and, low and behold, I actually get one! Cue pandemonium trying to get her to take my shift again, booking flights and accommodation and all the gubbins that come with international travel. My flight home was standby (I work in the travel industry, so cheaper standby flights are a benefit). However the flight was oversold, so I was sat in CDG for 6 hours waiting for a flight home, wondering if I'm end up like Tom Hanks in The Terminal and living in Terminal 2's departure lounge. Fortunately I got on in the end, and never have I been so relieved to sit in a middle seat. Still, the stress of fighting with a ticket site in a language I don't read well, booking flights, hotels, shift swaps and the added stress of getting home was worth it to see my favourite band in such an intimate and iconic setting and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Hella Tiny Tour 2025, anyone?1 point

So, after being absolutely obsessed with Green Day since January 2nd 2005 (yes I remember the exact date), the obsession faded away gradually, but steadily and completely (or so I thought at the time) some time around 2013. It was not too long after the Trilogy came out. For a decade I walked around having no idea what Green Day was up to. I heard they were releasing a new album, Revolution Radio, but paid zero attention to it. Life was too hectic at the time, my music taste had branched out a bit, and the name, Revolution Radio, I think reminded me too much of 99 Revolutions, which is one of my least favorite Green Day songs. Father of all... didn't even register on my radar. Then October 30th 2023 comes, I checked Instagram mindlessly scrolling while dngrinki my coffee after some morning meeting, and a Green Day post catches my eye because it has the words Bataclan and Paris in it. All this time I had kept Green Day on my Instagram, but I wasn't paying attention, I would very often skip their stories when they were promoting stuff (I know, I know), so I wasn't sure what this was. A memory from a show they played at Bataclan? No! It's a show in Bataclan for that weekend. I got the feeling that I owed it to my teenage/early twenties self to at least try to go. Back when I was obsessed with Green Day I was living in Venezuela, and I remembered often seeing Green Day (or one of their side projects) playing these "surprise" shows in small venues, and a lot of my online friends in the US or the UK going, and as happy as I felt for them, I also felt so left out. I would have given an arm and a leg back then for Green Day to play a small surprise show in my city. And now here I was, living in Paris, and Green Day was going to play here, in Paris, in a venue with a capacity of 1500 people no more than 40min away from my place! So yes, I felt I owed it to myself to at least try to get a ticket. On the other hand I genuinely had an ethical conundrum: because this had been my dream back then, I knew how much this could mean to people who were fans now, today. If I got a ticket, would I be occupying a place I no longer deserved, and someone else who deserved it more would be left out? I know it might sound silly, but I really struggled with this. In the end I decided to leave it to fate: I would try to buy the tickets, and I knew it wasn't going to be easy, so if I got them that'd be it, I'd go. Tickets went on sale next morning, October 31st, and I was the billionth person on the queue, by the time it was my turn it appeared to be sold it. "Oh well, I saved some good money at least!" Went into a zoom meeting for work, and when it was over some 30min later, I switched tabs and tried again, kind of just out of habit. And suddenly I have two tickets for the show in Bataclan! So I tell my partner we're going to see Green Day live this Saturday, and he's a bit confused by this (he has stayed confused by the effect this band has on me ever since ). So to hype myself up I decide to listen to their whole discography again and to catch up and listen to what they had released since the Trilogy. (Revolution Radio was love at first sight, Father of all.. has grown on me). So by Saturday I am very excited, but still sane We arrive to the venue about 20 minutes before doors and the line was huge! By the time we got in the area in front of the stage was very full, so I stayed back on a slightly higher level in which I was right at the front, so I had a pretty good view. I hadn't been to a Green Day show since 2010, I hadn't seen what their shows were like lately, so I had no idea what expect in terms of anything: setlist, duration, did they still sound amazing live? did they still have so much energy? And then they came on stage, and the moment they played the first chords of American Idiot (the opening song for that show) insanity came rushing back. It was instant. I was suddenly 15 again, living out a dream I didn't know I still had. They sounded as good as I remembered, they were still as full of energy, and full of surprises. They played Look Ma No Brains twice in a row, they also played TADIKM twice (but not in a row), Geek Stink Breath and Stuart and the Ave. They debuted 1981, the played Revolution Radio and Father of all, which were a debut for me at least, Letterbomb, which I didn't know had become less rare in their live shows, then they brought someone on stage to play Good Riddance, something I had never seen them do before. I just couldn't stop smiling and singing along and jumping up and down the whole time (and I had a bad foot and a bad knee at the time, but they also reverted back to their teenage version, because they didn't bother me once during the show). And I remembered all the lyrics too! The only song I couldn't sing along to were 1981 and Father of all. I loved and enjoyed every second of it.1 point

I think FOAM is as it is on purpose. Everything from the songs, to the artwork, to how they promoted the album (the few interviews I have seen at least) sounds to me like they wanted that album to be different from their usual, and to be fun: to be short, fast paced, and most of all not to be taken too seriously. That's why for me it makes perfect sense that they saved such a political song as TADIKM for Saviors. They probably also saved songs that they felt had a lot more of potential for the next album.1 point
-
Maybe those 6 songs were rewritten, beefed up and were going to be the 1972 EP, which was going to be mostly punk-rock bangers. Look Ma, Fancy Sauce, Coma City, Living in the 20s, Dilemma, Saviors, 1981 and Corvette Summer.1 point

That is pretty insane. Saviors is banger after banger and sounds like quintessential Green Day, unlike FOAM. Are they counting Fever? Otherwise One Eye Bastard could fit the sound of FOAM. FOAM just honestly sounds so different and not like them.1 point

Saviors Era isn't over quite yet, as there are more live shows booked next year and I'm 99 % sure there will be more festival shows and possibly another US leg on the way. As for the singles we randomly got during COVID era 2020-2022: Dreaming was a random cover during Billie's No Fun Mondays project, which was for some odd reason released under Green Day rather than BJA. Here Comes the Shock was (sadly) released to fulfill that NHL deal. Pollyanna was released as a promo for Hella Mega Tour. Holy Toledo! was part of a movie soundtrack. Out of these 4, only Pollyanna can be considered as extra generous to fans, since it was written to be this feel good song during the tour. As for 15th studio album, it really makes you wonder how do The Boys™ see their own future and if they are once again taking 2-3 years off before releasing that album. They are definitely not getting any younger and I'd argue this is the last era we'll see Billie still look relatively young. I really don't have any predictions nor wishes for 15th album, but I do however hope they start rocking out their grey hairs and beards and appreciate how fucking old they are starting to be for this genre. Jason looks awesome with his hair already, so hopefully The Boys™ do follow the suit, 'cause Tre's blue hair looks ridiculous and Billie clearly has to dye his hair every month at this point to not show grey patches in his hair. As for the next tours, I've finally found peace and fully expect them to never play 21CB/Trilogy stuff ever again. Maybe once they'll play Nuclear Family/21 Guns or some shit, but for tours.. nah. Those days are in the past. Those albums will never get any more love than they got during their tours. Shame. I adore them. Oh shit I'm rambling completely off-topic nonsense. As for Saviors album, my top 3 after 9 months is following: 1. Corvette Summer 2. Dilemma 3. 1981 American Dream is still in my top 5 and I like Bobby Sox, although its lyrics are starting to get on my nerves. Father to a son is a massive flop and I still don't see any redemption in Fancy Sauce. Awful title with even more awful lyrics with okay outro. I also like Living in the '20s, but for some reason I really don't listen it anymore. One Eyed Bastard and Coma City remain as songs that I skip immediately. Saviors is also kinda ehh. Overall opinion after 9 months: Best album since Trilogy with best production since 21CB. Best guitar solo and bass work since Trilogy, unsure about how I feel Tre's drumming on this record: production is great, but his playing is pretty stale excluding Coma City. Guitar riffs are pretty weak and unoriginal and I haven't bothered to learn more than 3 songs (American Dream, Corvette Summer and Dilemma) thanks to it. Vocals are fucking awesome with my favorite being Dilemma's chorus and for some reason I dig that lower harmony during chorus in Corvette Summer. 7/10 album with 10/10 production.1 point
