I'm at a Sum 41 show and All the Time just played as part of the pre show playlist... and people were singing along! Doesn't surprise me that a Nimrod song is on the playlist because I know Deryck loves Nimrod, but I'm amazed people were singing. Haven't heard them singing anything else.5 points

The documentary is 110 minutes long. In the main it features new interviews with the band members and archival footage of their live performances, which are absolutely awesome. I just keep playing the doc again and again just to live through the live show. Billie Joe at his showman best, controlling the crowd like a conductor. Magic. There's the usual many mad moments that you always expect with GD. I don't want to give it away but, watch out for poor Jason White getting caught out napping. Ha, ha. The fights, Billie Joe's posterior and many many more. This is yet another epic box set from GD, for me the doc is the climax. @Keeping00 hopefully you will be able to see it someway soon. This is essential viewing.5 points

I managed to get GA tickets for Amsterdam through TM resale today btw!! Ideally should’ve kept cool and waited to see if GC tickets would be put out on there eventually but just the thought of maybe missing an opportunity to see them playing a regular show when they’re so close by was unbearable.4 points

From a fan's perspective, it's another must-buy. My copy finally arrived today, so I'm still taking it all in. Fascinating anecdotes and perspectives from the booklet again. It hits different having lived through everything being described and seeing the original reaction unfold the way it did. Exposing my age here, but American Idiot was my introduction to Green Day, and it was only later that I explored their back catalog and understood the context for expectations that the public had for them at this time. Also some interesting nuggets about Cigarettes and Valentines; the tape theft (whether true or false) was inconsequential, since their minds were made up well before that. Give Me Novacaine was originally written for the album, and an unspecified segment of Jesus of Suburbia was also recycled from Cigarettes and Valentines... I'm guessing the fast section of "I Don't Care." A pivotal demo that we likely won't ever hear is Billie's home demo of Wake Me Up When September Ends. Being one of the final tracks added to the album, it gets a very thorough writeup. Probably also one of the most important songs for Billie's evolution as a songwriter. I'm glad Billie and I are on the same page with Favorite Son being good enough for the main album, but I begrudgingly accept it may not have fit the narrative well enough. Oh well, it's on a wide release now and people can stream this gem freely. I've always got my nitpicks, and this one's no exception. "Lights Out" and "When It's Time" were previously finished outtakes from the album that still only exist as obscure additions to other releases (B-side to a single, and bonus track to the Broadway album). The rest of the B-sides album seems like it was made for me; I previously tracked down CD sources for every track that didn't make it on the main album, and here it all is in one place. I'm fine with the live B-sides being presented as is. There's a lot of redundancy as it is (I know the fans don't mind), but getting the complete shows would be mostly the same setlist over again (maybe someday, as their own releases). Now Dookie 30 gave us two live albums and American Idiot 20 dropped us back down to one, but it's the best choice in my opinion, and arguably the most historic. But dropping the encore set? That's a no-no. Like I said before, there was a lot of redundancy with the setlist of the era dominated by American Idiot (duh), but including those THREE classics would have helped and actually given us the complete show. Was it really a space issue? Anyways, the demos album is what we've come to expect, but I mean that in the best way possible. 10/10, wouldn't change a thing. Some people are mad that they don't sound different enough. Like what are they supposed to do? Go back and remake them more different?4 points

Actually Tallinn is in Estonia but for me personally it would be the second best option after Finland. 😂 But on the same weekend, there's one of the biggest festivals in Finland called Provinssi. They haven't announced any big names yet, but Provinssi is on June 26th-28th. If we're thinking about their tour geographically, it would be logical to tour Nordic countries and Estonia on same weekend. This speculation is so stressful but so fun! 😂3 points

I want to see the documentary, but unfortunately tough times mean I can't afford the box set anytime soon. Anyone have a very detailed description? What is it like compared to heart like a hand grenade?3 points

On this day 5 years ago (30 October 2019), Green Day played La Riviera in Madrid. Fun fact: they also played La Riviera in 1998 and 2000. More photos: 15 years ago (30 October 2009), Green Day played at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. I still remember a few bits clearly from this show – "I split my pants," the crowd singing Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 2000 Light Years Away, Coming Clean and the general magical feeling. Here's what younger me wrote: "On the bus to our hotel, we met another mother-and-daughter pair on their way to the show. I stuck six A4 sheets together to make a ‘PLAY ¡VIVA LA GLORIA!’ banner before we left. This time our seats were on Mike’s side. Watching Prima Donna and the drunk bunny, I was nervous. But once I heard those opening chords of 21st Century Breakdown, saw my heroes run onstage, I knew I would be alright. The songs I was hearing for a second, third time were as fresh as ever. Security followed Billie as he ran up into the seats in Know Your Enemy and East Jesus Nowhere. In Boulevard of Broken Dreams, he announced he’d split his pants. ‘Did anyone see my balls?’ After Boulevard of Broken Dreams, I held up my banner. Billie stopped and squinted. People around us were screaming ‘he’s seen it, he’s seen it, he’s seen it!’ and he pointed before yelling into the band mic. They began 2000 Light Years Away. The guys behind us were laughing, saying he misread it. I have no idea if it was really anything to do with my banner, but it was funny either way – and thrilling since they weren’t playing that regularly. Hitchin’ a Ride was followed by Coming Clean. It was a furious performance of a poignant song. Everyone was dancing. This time, I noticed a stencil of Gloria was the backdrop for She. With that, the 15 year-old song joined the narrative of 21st Century Breakdown. In King for a Day, Billie sang snippets of Stand By Me, I Fought the Law and Champagne Supernova. 21 Guns remained as emotional as that first night. Maybe even more so. Because, though I hadn’t quite figured out what yet, I knew something was worth fighting for. That bridge was my favourite moment of every set. It was all surreal. Watching the confetti spray out again; hearing a passionate Jesus of Suburbia and seeing the show close, lights dimmed and band bowing, with Last Night on Earth, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Good Riddance." Disclaimer: The bannner was only out for a minute between songs but I wouldn't take anything like that to a show now. I was 14. The merch: A typically crappy photo I took during King for a Day: More decent photos: 20 years ago (30 October 2004), Green Day played the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, NJ on the American Idiot Tour. 25 years ago (30 October 1999), Green Day played the Bridge School Benefit at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. More photos: 27 years ago (30 October 1997), Green Day played Deep Ellum Live in Dallas, TX on the Nimrod Tour. 32 years ago (30 October 1992), Green Day played the Berkeley Square nightclub. "This show was hella weird, but not the first time that Green Day played with terrible funk rock bands that were inexplicably popular in the Bay Area back then. Bands like Psychefunkapus, Limbomaniacs, Fungo Mungo, Bluchunks (who were not terrible), Compost, etc. I still went because it was only $6 and it was Green Day!" — Anthony Lew 33 years ago (30 October 1991), Green Day played BZ Huset in Aarhus, Denmark. In hindsight I can't believe we did that!!! I do remember that all the Costa Ricans on GDC were absolutely certain there'd still be tickets left, but I'd be shitting myself all the way to San Jose if I did that today.3 points

honestly its gonna be interesting seeing how Warning 25 (or if they decide insomniac 25th wasnt enough) and Insomniac 30th are gonna pull off the amount of raw nuggets AI20 gave us (granted i feel like those 2, especially insomniac will pivot towards more live stuff rather than demos and what not)3 points

I've read the booklet included with the box set today, and Favorite Son is "Produced by Green Day, Engineered by Chris Dugan and Reto Peter, and mixed by TIm James" -- just like Too Much Too Soon and Shoplifter. In other words: what's been stated earlier, that Rob Cavallo and CLA would've been involved, doesn't seem to be the case.2 points

Okay this is interesting! I noticed on my Facebook front page that I'm following "Tallinn Rockfestival". I didn't know that. But it appears that the site used to be dedicated for Green Day concert in Tallinn back in 2013. They have changed the name of the page today, I think about 30 minutes ago. They are performing in Oslo on June 26th. Tallinn Rockfestival will be on June 27th-28th. They will announce the line up November 6th. Of course this could be nothing, but why would over 11 years old page dedicated for Green Day just randomly change their name for a brand new festival?2 points

That's what they said about the spanish shows this year, and because of that (and because of the ticket prices) I wasn't going to be at the Madrid show at all, until the show in Galicia and they played both albums, so I lost my butt to get a ticket for Madrid and I didn't regret spending 100€ to see that, so if they get the time, they could play both albums.2 points

Homecoming demo is probably the most interesting song on the album. Personally, I've long since thought that at some point during the C&V sessions the band were listening to the works of The Who and started experimenting with different movements within one song. The similarities to A Quick One Whilst He's Away are pretty evident here. I don't think the fact that they covered the song during the 21CB era is a coincidence.2 points

@solongfromthestars and @Rumpelstiltskin2000 I didn't know you two had been to the show in Costa Rica! I loved so much reading both your recounts of the show, and the lengths you went to to get there... and you bought the ticket the morning of? I would have died from stress thinking "I flew all this way and spent all this money and I bet you the tickets will be sold out by the time I get there" 😅 That show was legendary, I still feel like we should all talk about it in a hushed, reverential tone, so I'm really happy you both got to experience it!2 points

Fairly interesting programme from Absolute Radio in the UK (on the Rayo app) about AI and the anniversary. Managed to not look forward at all in their talk about bands still having political messages however. https://hellorayo.co.uk/absolute-radio/shows/absolute-radio-stories/id-232098420/2 points

The 2002-2003 era was definitely a strange era for the band, it's obvious that they were throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. The material that has been released from that era is all over the place. Plus, didn't they record a Christmas album and a hip-hop album during that time (not as a serious project but as a joke)? Also if you look at most of the credits for the AI B-sides, Rob Cavallo's name is nowhere to be seen (except Favorite Son) and some songs were worked on by a member of the Rock Mafia production team. How much were the Rock Mafia involved during this era and were they involved in the production of C&V? Unless more material gets released from this era there is only so much we'll ever know. For whatever reason, the band has chosen to keep everything else in the vault. There is so much material in the vault from this era it's likely the band has harvested a lot of it for new material so they probably feel there's no point anyway. I'd be happy with the C&V title track getting released since there is no reason it shouldn't given we have a live version.2 points

I'm not saying anyone who disagrees with my personal opinions is a fascist. What I am saying is that there is one major political party in the US headed by a fascist, Billie was expressing support for the party not headed by a fascist, Brit was giving him shit for that, and I think that was dumb to do she shouldn't have. When you're part of a family of a band whose key principles are openness and inclusion, maybe don't air your catfights with the frontman in public? I also didn't say she doesn't have the right to have shitty opinions, I did say I've lost respect for her because of her bad takes. I don't have to respect her just because of who she happens to be married to. Anyway, I'm done. If you really want to we can continue this in DMs.2 points

I'm not really into this huge desire to talk about/get C&V but I will add what Rob Cavallo writes in the AI 20 booklet. "So, I got together with the band and they tole me they had written an entire album's worth of material. Wow! Awesome! But there was a problem. The guys were sounding, for whatever reason, just a little bit rusty. The music was good but was it really their best? I took it to my boss (the prescient Tom Whaley . He agreed with me. He said "let's meet with the band". A few days later in the Warner Bros executive conference room, Tom says to me and the guys " we appreciate what you guys have gone through and appreciate this new album. And while we are prepared to release it, we are not prepared to give it the big push (meaning marketing $) because we don't believe this is the best work you are capable of". BOOM! He was so brutally direct! I think I was sweating profusely. Billie looked directly at me and asked "is that what you think too?" "Yes I said, nodding my affirmation. Billie said "ok, let me think about this and process it, and we'll get back to you." Two days later, we were all back in the same conference room. Billie starts "So I';ve been thinking about what you guys said last time....and I think you're right. We want to make out best record and we want you guys to like it and to give it the big push. And we are willing to do what it takes to make that happen. The question is: Tom, are you willing to do it also?" Tom said "sure, what do you need?" The rest is about Rob going to work with them Monday to Friday in Berkeley.2 points

What stuff do they show in the documentary? Is it mostly live shows, or is it a lot of studio recording like HLAHG?1 point

We know the band love to recycle ideas. Let's face it, C&V stuff would be prime AI 20th Anniversary fodder to boost sales numbers but since we've definitely heard most of C&V in some guise or another, they've never bothered to put it out. The master tapes story is complete and utter nonsense and I can't believe people are still speculating about it. They'll absolutely still have the session files. The "stolen" thing was either 1: A throwaway comment in an interview that grew legs or 2: a calculated bit of marketing. They've all but confirmed what us Occam's Razor fans have long since thought: C&V was considered poor, so they went back to the drawing board. During this process they wrote the Homecoming demo and the rest is history.1 point

I don't know if it's also the case in the UK, but normally with booking.com you can find hotels with a free cancellation policy, so potentially you could book right now and cancel in a couple of weeks if we get confirmation that they are not going to Download.1 point

There was a Costa Rican girl on the forum back then and she was able to keep checking the ticket status for everyone on GDC. Without that I wouldn't have dared to go without tickets! It wasn't even close to sold out. Had it said sold out I wouldn't have even tried to go1 point

Well I continue to be in my Green Day isolation ward trying to avoid AI Anniversary spoilers while I am (still! 😤) waiting for my boxset. On the flip side of things, last Friday I finally got around to listening to the demos from the Nimrod 25th Anniversary while waiting, and I am completely obsessed with Black Eyeliner. Every time I listen to it I replay it a few times, and then move on for a bit, but like half an hour later I'm like "god, I want to listen to it again!" so I go back. What an absolutely beautiful song! It's just perfect, all of it, it's amazing! How did it not make it into the album?! I feel it would have been my favorite song in Nimrod, and there are a lot of good songs in Nimrod. At the same time though, I'm happy it didn't make it into the album because then we wouldn't have Church on Sunday, which I also adore. So things happening the way they did was perfect. But really, I just wonder why they decided not to put it in the album. All those times I've said I went on a sabbatical from Green Day for ten years until last November, I wish someone had sat me down and made me listen to this immediately So if there's anyone out there who hasn't heard this song yet, this is that message for you. Stop whatever you are doing and listen to Black Eyeliner. You are welcome. Ode to Black Eyeliner over (for now).1 point

Not necessarily when they are in Europe. This summer they had a few shows on consecutive nights in the European leg. One free night between shows in different countries is well within their standards, I think.1 point

But overall, your 1972 thread was thoroughly enjoyable to be involved in. Surprising, horrific even, and downright depressing sometimes. Full of intrigue, like the leaked 'One Eyed Bastard' for example. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. And after all, worth the wait for Saviors arriving at last. One of GD's best ever albums imho. So, thank you for starting the thread. When's the next one?😁1 point

What do we think about the 4K upgrades of the American Idiot music videos posted to YouTube? I dunno about y'all, but I'm watching Boulevard now and it still looks a little soft, unlike the Dookie music video remasters which had plenty of grain & lots of fine detail. I'll need to watch all of them before reaching a conclusion, but right now I think at least this one I'm watching (Boulevard) might be from a standard definition digital or tape master upsampled to 4K. We'll see! -- Or, actually, 3rd hypothesis, these are new transfers but they've been DNR'd into oblivion. Check this out: Looks just like the 2012 Magical Mystery Tour Blu-Ray, which also was DNR'd into oblivion. -- American Idiot looks great and how it should (if a bit more saturated w/ clipped highlights)! In fact, the higher resolution reveals some masking mistakes in the warped-time segments, only noticeable if you slow it down or pause at the right time. Since these are also high-resolution, I'm wondering if these were 1) shot digitally, edited digitally, upscaled here 2) redone digitally for the remaster or 3) originally done optically? This second shot with a bit of green spill also tells me some of these shots were done later, maybe with a different method of bringing them into the plate. YouTube compression sucks for analysis though, hopefully the technically inclined or connected of us would be able to provide us the master copies on streaming services like Apple Music, barring that a lossless video capture from them. I could do the latter with an Apple TV 4K and a capture card, but my capture device is limited to 1080p. I'll see if I can grab some screenshots from iTunes, though, for comparison! iTunes Screenshot (here's the listing: https://music.apple.com/us/music-video/american-idiot-remaster/1775651067) Back to YouTube, oh my goodness this is gorgeous: I'll continue later, I don't have much time this week to really go into depth with these. Feel free to continue the discussion about this, though, and if the rest look as good as if not better than American Idiot, job well done! Still, it's curious to see that Boulevard doesn't shape up, maybe the final film element is gone? Who knows? I doubt we'll ever get clarity on how these were done, same with the Dookie music videos. My guess is these were probably done by an internal Warner team who also would've been behind the similarly great Rick Astley's Together Forever & a-Ha's Take On Me 4K remasters. I'm personally happy that the industry has NOT taken cues from Park Road Post's destructive digital restoration practices (and the praise that it had garnered from an undiscerning press and audience). We've finally learned our lessons from the late 2000s / early 2010s about DNR, for the good of everyone please don't set us back!1 point

i "think" they took credit for Stop, Drop and Roll because they "gave" that song to the Hot tubs alongside Pedestrian and Broadway (and they got Fuck Time, Stray Heart, Stay The Night and Lazy Bones in return) while the network directly "stole" from them (but in revenge green day "stole" Govenator from them)1 point
-
Green Day try to take credit for Stop, Drop and Roll on the blue ray. No mention of The Network though. At least they didn't try to take credit for Money Money as well.1 point
-
Well, yeah, since this pretty much seem to sum it up what actually happened, it's appears to be more of a little "nod" to the fans and the "stolen tapes" story to include that "As legend has it, the tapes mysteriously disappeared from the studio" bit that I saw someone else share a photo of. If they sticked to the story in the documentary, perhaps that was shot before it was decided what they'd write in the included book on matter? Robs explanation kind of puts things in a new light I mean, now we know it's more like Billie comes in with songs for the next album and to his dissapointment getting this rather underwhelming response, in opposite to thinking the material is weak himself and trying to get approval to delay it och go in a different direction. Perhaps the "stolen tapes" and "it was a blessing in disguise" thing came about as it felt like they "owned the situation" more that way. Who knows, just speculation. The only other theory I can think of is that it actually DID disappear after the meeting. But rather than stolen or disappearing without the band knowing, it was a delibirate - sort of "punky" - move by Billie because he got so pissed. Since the material got "dissed", he deleted it so the label would't have access to it, and only kept either demos, a CD, or a hard drive of C&V somewhere himself.1 point
