I’m Joy in the UK and I can legitimately retire next year - that’s how old I am! I’ve loved all kinds of music all my life, everything, even some classical music and I’ve been going to rock concerts since I was a kid. I had a subscription to Britannia Music and I kept seeing Green Day’s early albums in there. I was always up for trying something new and kept hovering over it but never actually took the plunge. My love of music in some ways led me into an ill-advised relationship. When I finally realised after 20 years that it was abusive and it was behind me, I just couldn’t listen to anything. Everything reminded me of it. My daughter - @solongfromthestars - wouldn’t even have known that I ever loved music because she never heard me listening to anything. Then in 2007 she started talking about Green Day. The first song she played me was Boulevard of Broken Dreams. I told her that Billie had a nice voice. She kept asking me to listen to the other music on her Piczo site so I heard Whatsername and absolutely loved it. It wasn’t what I expected at all. After I bought her American Idiot I could hear the cowbell in Homecoming through her headphones. She eventually said she loved that song so much she had to play it to me even though she thought I’d say it was “just noise”. I actually loved that too. I don’t remember exactly how I came to hear Give Me Novacaine, but I just fell in love with Green Day then. It was completely fresh and untarnished. I felt like I was “allowed” to listen to music again and I’ve never looked back. My daughter and I were in a shit situation as a single parent family - I was desperately trying to keep a roof over our heads and she was being bullied terribly, but then we went to see Green Day together and it was an escape. We’d never had a holiday but we made it our mission to get to more shows and saw things we’d never dreamed of like the Grand Canyon because we went to see Green Day. It gave us something to strive for and enjoy together. So basically, American Idiot gave me music back. I’ve discovered new music through Green Day and reconnected with songs I used to love. “Can you imagine if Billie held your hand one day?” I asked my daughter when we watched Bullet in a Bible. Little did I know that she would get up on stage with Green Day and in 2018 it was actually my hand that Billie held!4 points

Yeah, it's definitely the only one so far! Looking at my list there are some other dates with just one thing, but I think there are actually only two (25 and 29 December) with nothing at all. I did miss some things at the beginning though. I'll add them at some point if I don't forget. ...And I just realised I didn't include any Pinhead Gunpowder stuff because I don't care about it. I ought to include it though, I suppose...3 points

Only one thing today. 19 years ago (7 September 2005), Green Day played in Philadelphia, PA on the American Idiot Tour. EDIT: There is no longer only one thing because Green Day played in Denver, CO this year (7 September 2024). Boulevard would have like 2 billion if not for Spotify’s dumb sorting and combining of songs.2 points

Since they this week they were releasing demos/live version only for songs we already know, I thought it'd be safe to keep on reading this thread without any spoilers. Clearly, I was wrong 😂2 points

I will say, as someone who collects just about everything they've put out, it does kind of stink having about 90% of this set already. Didn't stop me from ordering the deluxe bundle, but still. It is neat to hear these demos, but I hope some of the others are drastically different. It is interesting how the WMUWSE demo doesn't have the lyric about Billie's dad in it. I thought this about the BLVD demo as well. Definitely gave me Warning-vocal vibes.2 points

We said the same thing — Detroit is clearly trying to kill Mike! And clearly the issue isn’t “resolved!” I really hope somebody in news follows this story to the end so I don’t have to wonder/take matters into my own hands. I’m so curious who the operator is/their motive.1 point

I’m praying it’s after the election, as I’m gonna be really busy up until then (freelance audio engineer and election years are always big earners). But since the release date is October 18, I feel like they’re gonna do something for then. Yes he is! I’m hoping for nyc 🤞🏻1 point

Mike put some pics from the Detroit show on his Instagram story to St Jimmy but only managed to catch this one of Billie and Jason White Can't remember if I posted this one is or not. It's one of Billie, Jason White and Kevin at Project Chimps and that Greg took1 point

Oh really? I don't ever remember hearing about that! Poor Mike. This is completely understandable. I honestly think this would have been my reaction too. I'm sure I would have been f-ed off and been muttering about how it was typical that the show I was attending got cut short or cancelled etc etc! Probably only realising later that things could have been a whole lot worse!lol! I think it's just a reaction to how much the guys mean to us!💕1 point

I suspect the cost of these side gig tours comes out of Billie’s pocket. He pays his bandmates and covers the cost. The Longshot shows couldn’t have made anything. Tickets were dirt cheap they sold barely any merch and most clubs were 200-300 cap. He does this because he loves it and for the fans. I would love a small Longshot style tour for PG. Tickets for east coast shows were not hard to get.1 point

On this day 3 years ago (6 September 2021), Green Day played the last show of the North American Hella Mega Tour in Seattle, WA. More photos: 7 years ago (6 September 2017), Green Day played in Orange Beach, AL on the Revolution Radio Tour. “Great to play in Alabama where my stepfather Gordin Smith was born and also laid to rest.🙏🏽 He was a good man who taught me a a lot, and once again I can see why he loved his home state so much! Thank you so much for making us feel so at home tonight! 🎶” — Mike More photos: 12 years ago (6 September 2012), Green Day played Let Yourself Go at the MTV VMAs. "We sort of got crowd-eaten. They sort of collapsed on us and that was… fun.” — Billie More photos: 29 years ago (6 September 1995), Green Day played in Cologne, Germany on the Insomniac Tour. 32 years ago (6 September 1992), Green Day played Uncle Charlie's in Corte Madera, CA on the Kerplunk Tour.1 point

I imagine it's probably originally because he might have thought it too raw to keep performing it with the lyrics about his dad but eventually it just wasn't potent enough without?1 point

Ask them to order them now, they still can. The manager at mine said she first declined them because tumblers usually don’t sell but if they know there’s interest they will. She then ordered them and they came in the following week. They come in flats of six they can order one flat and have a few cups for sale1 point

I just wish we had an acoustic demo of this song. I want to hear it raw on a single guitar when he first wrote it, not a full band version ready to record. That’s what’s cool about demos, hearing the evolution of the song. This is mostly there already apart from the lyrics. I want acoustic demos of everything1 point

All the professional photos from this show are in the GDA article about it. https://www.greendayauthority.com/news/6193/ If yours isn't there then unfortunately it seems no-one has posted it You could try contacting Greg Schneider, the Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, Joe Maroon or any other local photographers to ask if they have them.1 point

They are now 2-2 in terms of weird shit happening when they play in that ballpark. Last time out on Hella Mega, Mike basically passed out from heat exhaustion during Jesus of Suburbia and never came out for the end of Good Riddance. Cleveland would never! Plus the "Unofficial Green Day Museum" is located right in Lakewood in my media room! They need to visit! And, yeah...having to buy a Cincy and Pitt patch as a Clevelander was torture. Had I bought the Detroit one I might have spontaneously combusted.1 point

I feel like it hasn’t happened in recent history or us crazies would probably know about it? Agreed. Couldn’t tell any difference between the show I attended Sunday and this one. They’re a machine.1 point

God Billie and the guys are such pros just coming back and playing after a scare like that. Glad everyone was safe and OK.1 point

If majority of the american idiot demos sounded like 95% same as the studio album then it's not worth it.1 point

if only i was a naive fan that didn't know abt everything, i could still be excited for everything else 😢1 point

Yeah that's true too there are so many things that haven't had a good release that they decided to hold back on. I feel a bit disappointed about it, but I think the new documentary will be nice to have.1 point

The whole set is like that unfortunately I wish they were giving us more actual unreleased songs. There’s not even anything to use to hype this release that we haven’t already heard, and my guess is all the “demos” will sound virtually like the finished products1 point

I remember hearing WMUWSE at my primary school disco in 2005 at 9 years old. My knowledge of music at that time consisted of music my parents listened to (classical and church music, and occasional Simon & Garfunkel). I remember thinking how magnificent and melodic Green Day sounded and I was really surprised that ‘heavier’ music existed. It wasn’t until late 2007 I got into Green Day properly and became captivated. They spoke to me in a way no other music ever had and all the emotional trauma I had ben dealing with at that time became a little easier because of Green Day. In 2010, I begged my mum to let me paint my bedroom like the Jesus of Suburbia music video and she let me, provided I kept it restricted to my room. It took 2 weeks in the summer holidays and it became my masterpiece. I cut up sponges to carefully create the white rectangles for each letter and cut out stencils (which I still have) out of paper. I couldn’t order spray paint online as I was under 18 so I had to go with my mum to a shop and buy the spray paint. I was meticulous and insisted the colours had to be the perfect red and pure black. My bedroom became somewhere I could hide - a safe haven. It was my own place where I could be myself in a world that didn’t understand. Every night from 2008 - 2011 when I came home from school, I would watch Bullet In A Bible on my tiny pink tv (which we then switched for a silver one when I re-did my room) and dream of seeing or meeting my heroes. I would finish watching it and then restart it so the show wouldn’t have ‘ended’ and then pause it right before Longview. It was a coping ritual and Green Day helped me in ways I don’t think I’ll ever be able to properly explain. They saved my life. I’ve seen Green Day 15 times since then and every time is different. I’ve had the opportunity to met Billie Joe and Mike twice and Tre three times; I got to talk and joke with them and now their autographs are complete on my arm. Seeing American Idiot in full on the Saviors tour was like a religious experience; AI was on repeat when I first got into them (so much so that the CD is super scratched now) and hearing all the songs live was such a beautiful and cathartic experience. My life has changed so much since then, and Green Day helped me through it. I didn’t think I would live this long and I’m here. I’m still breathing. ~ Maria, 29, Wiltshire, UK.
