7 years ago yesterday (11 August 2017), Green Day played in Kansas City, MO on the RevRad Tour. More photos: Billie also did an Instagram (or Facebook, I don't remember) live that day. 8 years ago (11 August 2016), Bang Bang was released. It was played for the first time on Virgin Radio UK and I was interviewed on the show That was such an exciting day. 13 years ago (11 August 2011), Green Day played the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, CA. More photos: “We went and played 20 songs that no one had ever heard - in a row. And with no plan of a record even coming out. That was terrifying. It reminded me of the times we played in front of crowds that had never heard of us before - nothing was familiar. There was nothing being marketed. It was really exciting and it made me want to throw up with fear at the same time. We were treating ourselves like a new band.” — Billie Joe Armstrong 14 years ago (11 August 2010), Green Day played in Bristow, VA on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. 15 years ago (11 August 2009), Green Day played in St. Louis, MO on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. More photos: 26 years ago (11 August 1998), Green Day played Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary on the Nimrod Tour. 30 years ago (11 August 1994), Green Day played Lollapalooza in Charlotte, NC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On this day 3 years ago, the Pollyanna video was released. I'd never watched it before but it's actually a nice video with some backstage and live footage. 7 years ago (12 August 2017), Green Day played in Omaha, NE on the Revolution Radio Tour. More photos: 8 years ago (12 August 2016), the Bang Bang lyric video was released. 14 years ago (12 August 2010), Green Day played in Hartford, CT on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. I don't seem to have ever had any photos from that show and I thought I'd found some twice, only to realise they were actually from Holmdel... including the ones I used on the GDA Instagram story. Oops. It's been a rough month so far and I'm tired. 15 years ago (12 August 2009), Green Day played in Kansas City, MO on the 21st Century Breakdown Tour. More photos: 19 years ago (12 August 2005), Green Day played in Barrie, Canada on the American Idiot Tour. Two of the gifs aren't exactly SFW, so don't open the spoiler if your boss might appear behind you in the next 60 seconds: 26 years ago (12 August 1998), Green Day played in Vienna, Austria on the Nimrod Tour. 30 years ago (12 August 1994), Green Day played Lollapalooza in Atlanta, GA. And 33 years ago (12 August 1991), Green Day played 9410 Church in Grosse Isle, LA.4 points

Green Day was scheduled to perform an intimate show at the Q101 Lounge in Chicago today. Unfortunately, following the postponement of their Hersheypark Stadium concert (now rescheduled for September 2nd) due to Billie Joe’s voice issues, today’s Q101 Lounge performance has also been canceled. 😔 The band has assured that they will reschedule this intimate show as well. They’re not yet certain about tomorrow’s concert at Wrigley Field, but for now, it looks like it’s still happening https://www.instagram.com/p/C-kmYkCtGeg/4 points

Imagine how expensive 21st century breakdown boxset would be. Cd1- 18 studio album tracks Cd2- 18 track demos Cd3- B - sides and other never before heard demos(since 1 cd only limited to somewhere 600mb and up to only 23 tracks) Cd4-Cd6 - overbloated live albums😂 Green Day team take it easy with those live audios4 points

Almost everything was realased except demos that sound very similar to album tracks... Maybe 'the vault' was no so full for this album than for dookie3 points

Maybe one day in the far future after we get a reissue for all the major studio albums we can get a compilation to cover the years between Warning and AI. I was recently going through the old phone message songs and having higher quality versions of Minnesota Girl and Why Does It Always Rain on Me would be nice Probably a large part of the reason it wasn’t included is that C&V isn’t widely known in the general public much less do they care. This is a release meant to solidify their legacy, not educate normies about a mostly forgotten chapter of Green Day lore.3 points

I do like it! I think it's just the different people are excited about different things. I'm very excited about the second documentary, I am very excited about having American Idiot (just as it was released 20 years ago) again, since I had to part ways with my original copies (yes I bought that album twice after my first copy of the CD got scratched from overuse lol). I am also very excited to see what those unknown songs between Homecoming and Whatsername might be and the possibility of them being part of the AI story arch. I also want to have those pictures and whatever artwork they are including the booklet (really hoping the original artwork is included, for the reason stated above). The rest of it I'm neither hyped nor disappointed by, I'm just indifferent to it because that is a me-thing. For instance, I am not a music nerd (I'm quite the opposite of it, and have zero ear or talent for music, wish I did, but hey that's life), so the demo's are not a selling point for me. I'm glad they are there for the people who love that type of stuff. The live shows, I don't really care. I think the only way I'd be hyped about them releasing footage from a live show would be if it was one the shows I have attended. But I'm happy they are there for people who are really into that. I'm sure there are people here who are the opposite, and don't care too much the documentary or the idea of getting more details about the AI story arch, but are very hyped about the demo's or the live shows. Something for every taste As for C&V... I don't buy the story that it was stolen. If it had been it would have been leaked the minute that AI got huge. So either they were recording some songs, then came up with the idea of AI as a concept album and decided not to use those songs and then they got recycled in future albums, B-sides and side projects, so we have effectively heard anything worth listening to from those sessions. Or they felt very unsatisfied with it, and decided to scrap it altogether, in which case I'm happy to abide by their decision that we don't need to hear those songs because they are not good enough for them. Basically, I think we have heard every thing that was worth releasing from those songs. 🤷♀️2 points

Did they skip that song to allow the Linda Lindas to play? Good mostly full show2 points

She's...a radio baghdad / in a radio baghdad / and she can't seem to radio baghdad Man, I was hoping for more unheard songs. Hopefully we haven't heard a single note from Breaking Down, Another Year and Lowlife. They could be Homecoming, Xmas Time of Year and Take the Money and Crawl. How mad would you be? Mad enough to get that petition taken seriously? Album 15's gonna be American Idiot part 2. Maybe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot#Track_listing I am curious as to the plot twists that could happen on the songs between Homecoming and Whatshername.2 points

I think the reason Irving Plaza has some songs cut short is to fit in a Double LP, otherwise they would need a third disc. Another thing, I just got VH1 Storytellers blocked on youtube, maybe they are thinking on release it someway2 points

Just a lil (but long, sorry) musing. Feeling very lucky: Back in 2005, after like 8 months of listening to American Idiot, I decided that Green Day meant a little (a lot) more to me than any band ever had and I wanted to go to their concert. They were on the fourth US leg of their American Idiot tour by that point, and my dad had trouble finding tickets. He finally grabbed some with just a couple weeks to spare. Last fall, I hadn’t had much to do with Green Day in a solid three years. I somehow got word that they were teasing a new single, and I liked what little I heard of it. Three days later, I watched them perform TADIKM live for the first time and announce their tour, and I didn’t even have to think before I decided that I was going to make it happen and see them again, even though I hadn’t ventured to a concert since COVID. I decided they were worth it, and managed to get amazing seats. This past week, the Philly show felt so uncertain due to all the bad weather in the forecast. I was so worried my show would be the one to get canceled, but then in the back of my mind I kept thinking nah, I’m the luckiest when it comes to Green Day. I swear the universe conspires to keep them in my orbit. Anyway, I just got home from the venue that was across the street from where I first saw them nearly 19 years ago. They played a lot of the same songs from the American Idiot tour, but I felt infinitely more moved by them now. 20 years has gone so fast.2 points

I’ve been holding off on buying the anniversary releases (insomniac, nimrod, dookie, and now American idiot), especially since I can listen to them on Spotify, but I still want them physically, with the booklets and all. I don’t listen to vinyl all that much but a part of me wants the vinyl packs, but I think I’ll get the cds. I’ll probably get more use out of those. A big splurge is coming. (I’ll get the insomniac vinyl since that’s the only option) Update: I splurged on the cd packs but on Amazon, it’s cheaper! (Except for preordering American idiot. I want the poster, even though my payment didn’t go through because of an error) Also got the dvd “riding in vans with boys” filmed during the pop disaster tour.1 point

Do you think that the documentary will only be available on blu-ray in this release? Will be available in a alternative format in the future (dvd alone, streaming platform, etc.)?1 point
-
I know I keep harping on about this but on the topic of is there excitement for this release the fact that I can’t play the blu-rays has dampened my excitement considerably. That combined with the fact that instead of unheard songs they’re just rereleasing songs like Governator and Shoplifter and I don’t think I’ll be spending $70+ for this set just for a bunch of buttons and a patch. I have major FOMO over missing this new documentary which is the only part of the set that’s worthwhile to me1 point

I do, I think lots do but as ever, we want more (well some do).1 point

For some reason on Amazon.ca it says the artist of the album is My Chemical Romance. And then I go onto the artist page of MCR and it says they also made Dookie, Saviors, and several other GD albums. So strange,1 point

I can't speak for others, but in my case it's because I don't think that album ever existed. I said it here back when we first heard about it and I still think so, I think it was a joke, possibly a gag that was supposed to link with their farce feud with The Network, but never carried through or paid off. Realistically speaking, we're talking about an album that was completed and given a name, then it got "stolen", there was one copy.. in the early 2000's! I mean in 1960's or 70's maybe something like that could happen, although it would still indicate gross negligence eligible for lawsuits, Green Day didn't have their own studio back then, so the idea that they invested time and money for however many month to complete recording at a studio would be pricey and near-devastating, especially to the Green Day of post-Warning/pre-American Idiot era. Although, it would be very neat if it had been true and we can hear it one day like you said. Same here, very much so. I geeked out on the concept of that album like no other back then lol1 point

Something doesn’t have to sound like shit or be completely different to be a demo. Mike has definitely said before that a ton of work went into this album right down to the demos.1 point

C&V sessions and AI sessions were separate recording sessions. The first in 2002-2003 and second being 2004. However, we know the B-sides are confirmed C&V songs. Which means these demos are more likely to be true AI session songs. The only skeptical moment for me was “Just Another Year”, C&V had a song called “Lately (one more year)” I believe. Similar concepts and as you can tell they hadn’t solidified song names till later (radio Baghdad, are we, we are, novocaine). They lost a good opp to do a double re-release with AI&CV. Maybe one day…1 point

I was a completist collecting all the CD singles to get the highest quality digital copies of all the B-sides from the American Idiot era, so it feels gratifying to have all of those in one place, especially with performances like the VH1 Storytellers tracks being spread throughout different releases. I don't think a non-LP track was missing from the era, not counting the radio edits. Though those are far too niche, the time-condensed version of Jesus of Suburbia is still pretty interesting. But I digress. B-sides are also more welcome here than with Dookie 30, as there's no "Shenanigans" compilation for post-2003 rarities. My nitpicks will always be that there can be more, but at the end of the day, what is there is gold and justifies the existence of such a set. For me, the demos will always be the meat and potatoes of these sets because they're never-before-released, and of historical importance to the making of the album. They've maxed out the discs with no glaring omissions, so I'm going to have no qualms double dipping on American Idiot (again). The main nitpick is the incomplete Irving Plaza show. I know the other live shows are incomplete snippets, but this is a reflection of how they were presented on released material. To have a disc dedicated to being a live album (which Irving Plaza was a solid choice), it's frustrating to be missing such a small part to prevent it from being complete. What else do people still want? I think Cigarettes and Valentines is the most common request, but I'm going to go against the grain and say that deserves to be its own release, and not locked away as bonus material on an American Idiot release. There's also still more than an album's worth of finished outtakes from the era (from John Roecker's reference CD). Lights Out was released, but during the 21CB era (was the thought that it belonged to that album now?). There's also the possibility that many of those tracks were from Cigarettes and Valentines. Finally, the Blu-rays are a great bonus. Even owning Heart Like a Hand Grenade, it still presents a sizable upgrade in quality. BBC performances are solid, but my one wish is to someday see the Sessions@AOL performances in decent quality. Maybe even some HD versions of the music videos?1 point

I’m hoping the new documentary will have a lot of that footage cuz yeah I didn’t like the “art project” aspect of HLAHG either, this was NOT the movie to do that to. Regarding Holiday/BOBD, it most definitely IS a demo. Just a very fleshed out and fully realized one. It goes to show just how much work was put into the album, even the demos.1 point

Poor Billie! I guess it's not surprising when he's giving it his all doing these super long setlists night after night, my voice was messed up from singing along at one show lol. Hope he's better soon. It's nice that the show is rescheduled instead of cancelled. That would be awesome. And King For a Day is the best and I will never get tired of it1 point

Oh, I’m just amused by the places he shouts out during some of the songs. In New York, he mentioned Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. No Staten Island. Last night, he mentioned Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and then Scranton. Later on he also mentioned wanting the people of Pittsburgh, Ohio and New York hearing us (maybe during Holiday?). But like, sir… Delaware is pretty close, lol1 point

This is why I partially don't want to meet them, like I would never go out of my way to meet them. I know they are humans and are entitled to have a bad day, or to be exhausted, or to be in pain, and you might catch them in one of those bad days/moments. And if you do, then you have this moment you have built up in your mind and it turns that in reality it sucks, or they were not as nice as you hoped, and you carry that memory with you for the rest of time. Even if you know it's normal and that absolutely no one can be nice all the time, I guess it will still sting. We don't know in what tone Tre said those things, maybe it was jokes that didn't land, maybe he was really being a bit of a jerk, so I have sympathy for the guy except precisely in that part of "Having a bad day only shows how unaware you are of your surroundings and that you are a selfish person." it's like, no it only shows they are humans. And also, you are paying for a show, you are flying half way across the country for a show, and you are entitled you expect a great show. But that doesn't mean you are also entitled to meet them and to expect them to be nice to you (unless he had paid for a meet and greet or something). And I say this as someone who has traveled abroad to see them because they were not doing shows in my country.1 point
-
Reading through that I'm not seeing what he did or said that was bad? Like, he happened to have had some beers after the show and didn't talk to them as long as they wanted or say the things they wanted? Just sounds like he was a bit drunk and joking around and not there to spend a lot of time talking. Not sure why they'd expect more when just randomly meeting someone (not at a meet and greet etc), sounds like an entitled attitude the way they keep going on and on about how much they spent and traveled as if that entitles them to anything but seeing the show. I can't see a single thing he said there that is particularly dickish or "very rude".1 point
