bobconrad 1dNo. 6: Green Day at Gilman, 1992. 📝 SHOW NOTES: I saw @GreenDay twice at Gilman in the early ‘90s, both very lively shows. I think the Spitboy photo posted yesterday was from this Green Day show. @galaxychica and I have seen them a handful of times in the past two decades. They’ve been an incredibly consistent and influential band. We are lucky they brought punk rock to the masses; although, I was critical of the major label jump back in the day, Green Day has done nothing but rise to the occasion in so many ways. Their support of their roots and hometown turf is admirable. (Deb, @galaxychica, briefly appears in their East Bay punk documentary.) This pic is about two years before their major label debut. 👉 BACKGROUND on this series: I started in the late ‘80s (very clumsily) developing what would ultimately become a “body of work” of indie, punk and hardcore band photographs. This was back when I did such things and called them such things. Comprising mostly #blackandwhite #35mm film at 400 (Ilford Delta, my friend Brian reminded me), I traveled mostly to Nor. Cal. spots (Gilman, Sac, etc.) but even shot Primus in SJ (my first year of college was at SJSU). I went as far as DC, NYC and, of course, shot a bit in my adopted hometown of Reno. The “body of work” emerged, and some of these images were published (cover photo of Alternative Press, Heckler, zines, etc.), one or two winning an award. I’ve put these online in various locations over the years, but they’ve never been on IG. #bnw_captures #insta_bw #igblacknwhite #bw_photooftheday #35mm #punkrock https://www.instagram.com/p/C4zfe7BOYx8/4 points

I’m sure someone already answered this but it’s Coley O’Toole, he is in We The Kings! I saw him walk out the side of HOB when we were waiting in line and knew it was him but didn’t know why he was there! lol then I saw him on stage 🤯3 points

Thanks to Arica Pelino for her footage and Shayne Stacy for digitizing this classic material. See the caption in the video for more info. This is just a teaser. Arica gave Shayne hours and hours of videotapes of East Bay bands including lots of never before seen Green Day material from her personal collection. With permission she is now sharing her stuff with fans for the first time! I’m starting this thread and will add to it as more stuff gets uploaded. In the meantime enjoy this small backstage clip from the Phoenix Theatre in 1991 and subscribe to Shayne’s channel.1 point

Any other guest appearances? Maybe an egg? Chester Bennington? A polychorus amp? Paper? Serj Tankian singing "Your mom"?1 point

I love Masked Intruder. I don’t know if they have a direct Green Day connection but they have an indirect one. I first discovered them when I saw them open for The Interrupters several years ago. They do a very entertaining live show, really leaning into the whole bank robber theme with a dancing cop onstage and ski masks and everything. Anyone who has a chance to see them live I recommend it, and the music is very power pop and catchy.1 point

Wow, Saviors in full. I didn't think it would happen, but that makes this the first time they've played a record live in full since 21CB, so 15 years!! I'm pumped for the tour now!1 point

He’s getting that up next, same account. Should be over the weekend1 point

Does anybody know which show on the Hella Mega tour the iTunes version of “Rock and Roll All Nite” was recorded at?1 point

Ah, legendary Not So Silent Night 2011 performance where they were last minute substitute and had to perform as 3-piece. Great show with funny improvisations everywhere (American Idiot solo) and also last time Billie played guitar during Jaded IIRC. Anyways, man was 39 during that night and off from tour. He is 52 now and about to hit the road once again with the most demanding setlist they've done in years. Getting older sucks, but I am so ridiculously happy to see them still perform after all these years. Sure, they might not jump around like they used to and some songs are slowed down and Billie can't hit some notes as effortlessly as he did 15 years ago, but that's just life. Man can still sing, play guitar and pull off awesome show. I wont take that for granted. Billie's vocals peak was definitely in 2009-2011 period. I've seen some recent comments of how Billie's 2004 vocals were better, but I disagree with that. Just listen beginning of this video. Man could sing and he did it so well.1 point

Hoarding is a strong word. She’s not a collector, these are her personal memories. It’s really generous of her to want to share everything now, she by no means had to. It’s been in storage for years and took a long time to go through and digitize.1 point

It was posted by Billie on Insta at some point in 2021. I don't know how he found that recording but let's not dig deep as much. Only information: 1983, California Johnny B. Goode was performed Blue didn't have the well-known red "BJ" initials and this is what I call the "Proto-Blue". Proto referring to how it's a prototype to the iconic look.1 point

I'm actually pretty confident that during non-album shows they'll be playing more of the stuff they couldn't normally play. 21st Century Breakdown might finally see some love after all these years and lets not forget recent resurgence of Warning songs being played. I have no confidence to see any love towards Trilogy, Revolution Radio nor Father of All but I wouldn't mind to hear one (or 37 songs on Trilogy) or two songs from them.1 point

Pretty sure they won't be playing it anyway with doing all of Dookie and AI1 point

Billie can fill in on kazoo . But hopefully he'll be back for the tour in the summer anyway Edit: Oh I see this is new info. The first post about it said he'd be back in the summer. Well in any case I hope he's well soon!1 point

Checking in to offer my continued thanks and appreciation to the blonde hair gods. A very real fan girl moment: Watching footage of the Anaheim show and mid-song getting distracted because Billie’s pants were cute.1 point

I'm right there with you, I obviously don't hate Dookie and commercially it makes sense to market the tour with them playing it in full, but I will fully admit that I won't appreciate hearing it in full like a lot of people who will be at these shows. A good chunk of Dookie has always been, and will always be on the setlist, whereas Saviors stuff could disappear after this tour, so I wish we could enjoy all of it now!1 point

The shift in response to FOAM is pretty standard with GD releases I find. When the new album drops, there are going to be folks who don't like it and suddenly the album they did before seems better by comparison. We saw it happen with the Trilogy and RevRad, so no surprise it's happening with FOAM. I'm glad to see people being more positive about it. It's not their best in anyway, but it's a fun album that's got some bangers on it. I appreciate the ambition even if they did miss the mark. Plus, the FOAM era itself was fun even if it was weird.1 point

I think a lot of the initial backlash against FOAM stemmed from: 1. It being the only new music we received for what we knew would be at least 3 to 4 years. 2. The perception that this was the new direction the band was taking. Particularly after RevRad, the shift felt misplaced. Now that we have Saviors, which kind of continues what RevRad was going for, FOAM loses all that bad baggage. It's no longer viewed as the only new material we have, nor does it define the band's sound going forward. And when you consider it as just a collection of 10 songs, it's evident that it wasn't as bad as people initially made it out to be. Now that the dust has settled, I believe fans should give FOAM another chance and appreciate it for what it is: a pretty fun, harmless record.1 point

I agree also with the other takes but when I first heard "We all die young some day" to me it seems like when you are depressed you can't realize your dreams because you're not capable of living in a way you could be. Especially the line, "We all die young and watch it slip away", because when you're depressed you're watching life is going by and even though you want to participate in it, you just can't or do anything about it and it is slipping away. Some of his most very raw sad lyrics to me.1 point
