  1. I agree with this thread. But what would be even better is if they played at super bowl 2026 which will be hosted in the bay area. Bay area super bowl, bay area band! It just makes sense! Let's all hope

  2. I'm not a huge fan of Youngblood, but have always liked the line "she's the cedar in the trees of Minnesota", being a clever call to Adrienne (cedar tree being on the Lebanese flag, Adrienne being Lebanese and from Minnesota). One of those things only die hard fans will catch.

  3. I never understood the immense hatred of Youngblood. It's not my favorite and I don't think it's an amazing song, but it's fine and pretty fun live.

  4. I went looking for an old thread, didn't find it and wasted time reading some old posts of mine instead, and I can't believe how vehemently I was bashing Youngblood?! I like it now! It was so much fun live (especially with the superior "fuck you I'm from England"). The other day I met a friend from GDC and he mentioned how much I used to hate Walk Away, which I'm also baffled by. They're both great songs. I had no taste.

  5. Bangkok, 1996. Some of these are from the Thai rock magazine Crossroads and others appeared in a 1996 issue of the German magazine Bravo. This is the first time I've seen this one. And this one. I also had no idea this last one was from Thailand. If anyone has those magazines and a scanner, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see some high quality scans. The only Crossroads I can find on eBay is $190...

  6. I totally understand that they play a Best-Of playlist when doing these shows but playling just one song from after 2010 feels somehow wrong. I mean they released 5 albums (more than 1/3 of their whole discography!) since then and at Least Oh Love or Bang Bang did commercially quite well. It wouldn't destroy the Best-Of playlist if they included 2-3 songs from the "newer" albums.

  7. I’m still surprised at the lack of appearances on late night shows. It seems like they have been more focused on private events, which is interesting to me.

  8. Guys, I think it’s time we write a petition for the NFL to get Green Day to headline the Super Bowl LVIX halftime show in New Orleans next year!!!!

  9. I really love this verse from Youngblood: I’m a rough boy ‘round the edges/Getting drunk and falling into hedges/She’s my weakness, fucking genius/Swear to god and I’m not even superstitious It’s just very genuine and cute and I like the wordplay at the end. I agree Youngblood isn’t brilliant or anything, but I think it’s a fun song. I love how sappy Billie gets when he writes love songs, it’s sweet.

  10. The NFL doesn’t pay performers, but they do cover expenses and production costs. The artist doesn’t pay for it themselves, they just don’t get a paycheck. But the trade off is these performances majorly boost sales and streaming — when J.Lo and Shakira performed a few years ago, their streams went up like 300%.

  11. Agreed. Green Day have so many fan favorite songs that would appeal to the super bowl audience. I could see a setlist consist of snippets from the following songs: American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Basket Case, Good Riddance, Wake me up when september Ends, Welcome to paradise, Longview and Know your Enemy

  12. I also hope Dookie and AI will be played in full during Festivals. Imagine we get Dookie and AI as a pro Shot at Rock am Ring at the same show. Maybe they wrote „non-album show“ to clarify its a festival and not a solo Show 🤷‍♂️ For Rock am Ring: they waited for the full line up announcement because of Green Day (they announced their tour at the same day). In 2013 they could play as long as they want (Marek Lieberberg said this in an interview). Maybe they make no difference with playing festival or solo show for the Setlist

  13. @Rumpelstiltskin2000 Agree. This was more like a corporate gig than a concert (I think I saw it was invite only?). That’s why they didn’t promote it at all online, and that’s why the setlist is all greatest hits. It shouldn’t be compared to a normal show!

  14. So is promo for this album done?

  15. I partially agree. Right now, I think Saviors is definitely the better album, BUT the vibe of the RevRad era is just unmatched. Back then, it was just about the new album. No anniversaries, no tours with three other bands, just Green Day and their new songs. Saviors is such a great album, it’s too good to be used as a vehicle to promote the anniversaries of Dookie and AI. Of course the tour hasn’t started yet but I doubt we’ll get to hear as many new songs as we did during the RevRad tour. But I don’t want to sound grumpy. It’s an awesome album and it’s still great to see the band in action!

  16. This album continues to be solid as we near a month out. FOAM was boring to me a few days in. Saviors has a lot of re-listen value and I think it’s due to a) good songs b) but also songs that have some variety in them. A lot of Saviors songs aren’t predictable after the first chorus and change things up even in small ways to keep it interesting. Nothing wild but even take a short song like 1981 that changes up the instrumentation at times to keep it feeling fresh.

  17. I'm fairly certain this set list was because it was a private party and strictly speaking for gaming fans not GD fans

  18. So Longview looks amazing, as does Basket Case, but I'm going to be a stickler for a second; they kind of ruined the shots of Billie and Tre with the psychedelic imagery. I know, these are only a couple seconds MAX, and I wouldn't have picked up on it if Billie's face wasn't used as the thumbnail. But as a home video enthusiast, this exhibits the telltale signs of digital noise reduction, which is a major no-no for preserving film and video. To make something look more "modern," digital processes are used to scrub an image of detail so surfaces look smooth and waxy. Billie's skin loses all texture, there's no detail on the fish, the color has been altered, and the background is different. Why was this only done on these very brief shots? Who knows, but it's probably linked to the fact that these are the only shots that use optical special effects. Otherwise, the entirety of the other footage looks to be in stunning true 4K. But for the completists out there, this is your reminder to keep the original SD versions around because these videos will always be subject to change with each new release.

  19. Illinois Entertainer (one of the publications I write for) posted their review of Saviors (no I didn't write this one ) https://illinoisentertainer.com/2024/02/spins-green-day-saviors/

  20. You're bring back memories from last year, with the number of phone calls we had to deal with after FOB played at Wrigley. The number of calls complaining about the noise, that people couldn't eat out on their balconies listening to classical music...

  21. It definitely has become this in the last decade or so because these shows have become dominated by pop and R&B stars. But when rock artists do it, it tends to be a bit more straightforward with less glitz — The Rolling Stones, U2, and Paul McCartney all performed different years in the early 2000s with solid rock shows. Good production value, but nothing too crazy.
    2 points
  22. I really have little idea about either Super Bowl or the performance but it does always seem to be a super glitzy, big production which doesn’t really feel right for Green Day to me.

  23. It would be cool to have a 90's band lineup like @The Grohl suggested, similar to the bands that played WWWY
    2 points
  24. They would sell more festival tickets if they played one album one night, the other one the next night. More people would go to two festivals.
    2 points
  25. We should focus on a petition for that one since it's possible next year's pick is already close to being decided on. They'd be done with the Saviors tour by then too.

  26. Or maybe they could play one of the two albums in full? Dookie and AI are two of the biggest rock albums of the last 30 years, I’m pretty sure even a festival crowd can appreciate this. That would still give them enough time to play some Saviors songs and the standard hits. I totally understand that different crowds call for different setlists, but no one is expecting them to play a set full of rarities. Would I like to hear Bab‘s Uvula Who? Sure, but I know it’s not going to happen. But what about Oh Love, Bang Bang, Still Breathing, Father of All, Stray Heart,…? These were all singles, and some of them were even quite successful. They could play these songs and would still have time for the hit singles. It’s just disheartening that they seem to think so little of their post-AI material. As someone who became a fan in 2009, most of the eras that I experienced are just not represented, which is a shame. I hope Saviors won’t suffer the same fate. It’s such a good album and it deserves the attention. After all, it’s called the Saviors tour, so I hope the new songs will get a worthy treatment.

  27. I remember this performance! Still one of my absolute favorites. In terms of who would be a good pairing for Green Day, The Hives would be awesome. Or they bring Pop Punk Disaster 2 to the superbowl and bring out blink. Foo Fighters or Muse would be great too. And Joan Jett!

  28. To be totally honest, as someone who has been an audience member for these types of corporate-sponsored shows at conferences and stuff, as well as festival-like shows put on by radio stations — when I see a band I’m only sorta familiar with, I want them to play only their actual biggest hits. Sure, Green Day have had hits and commercial success in the last 10 years. But hits on the same level as the setlist they’ve already put together for shows like this? Personally, no, I don’t think so. Their biggest hits — the ones that *everyone knows* — are covered in the setlist they’ve come up with. If I’m a casual listener, I don’t want to hear a deep cut or a hit that didn’t have longevity so I don’t really remember it. It genuinely does get boring when that happens! It’s a whole lot more fun when recognizable songs keep coming one after the other and energy remains high. I know as fans we have a totally different perspective, but if you think of it from the casual listener perspective, this approach makes a lot of sense.

  29. If they ever were asked, it would likely be in collaboration with someone else. I’m thinking this because of RHCP playing halftime with Bruno Mars. Who would make for a good combo with Green Day? I’m not sure exactly why but I was thinking Miley Cyrus lol

  30. If you want Green Day to play certain songs, you can hire them for your own private event. It'll cost you, but it's an option. We could pool together our resouces and it wouldn't be that bad.

  31. I feel like Kerplunk consistently gets repressed. I still need to pick up a copy, but I've seen repressings in the wild a whole bunch. Now, if they could reissue the trilogy that would be amazing.

  34. Well they weren't afraid to play Pollyanna at a few shows which was far away from the commercial success of Oh Love or Bang Bang. As I said, I think that playing 2 or 3 songs from the last 14 years wouldn't give the audience a dull concert.
    2 points
  35. As you get older it is harder to get out of your comfort zone. They are too dependent on audience's reaction and it's clear that they are afraid of giving a dull concert to a random crowd.

  40. Those poor souls... 😂 I'm sure that Lolla gets more complaints than Wrigley (which seems odd that wrigley would get that many complaints. That ball field is loud in the summer anyway.)

  41. Green Day would be an amazing halftime show choice. It’s a bummer how long it has been since they had a rock act headline. I still remember when I was little, Aerosmith, NSYNC, Mary J. Blige, Nelly, and Britney Spears performed together. What an incredible mashup of talent that appeals to different generations and types of music fans! I’d love to see these kinds of collaborations again.

  44. Is there research that actually backs that up? Genuine question, because I feel like promotion can’t do any harm, and those TV appearances seem relatively easy since it’s one song and they dip.
    1 point
  45. Agreed. For fucks sake they didn't play any Saviors other than 1981 in current records. The set apparently had 5 more songs according to cumming_clean94 on setlist.fm, but the current record is looking real bleak. And by record I mean the found songs in the set.

  49. You're so right! It takes the idea of Troubled Times and executes it flawlessly. I don't know why but I've never been a huge fan of Troubled Times. Something about the music and it's approach I'm not a huge fan of.
