If you've ever missed GDA's picture vault, consider following us on Tumblr! Before I even joined the GDA team, I tried to save as much as I could from the vault in case anything ever happened to it. Now I'm queuing all the photos, articles and other bits and bobs I saved or made over the years to be posted on the GDA Tumblr. There's bound to be some stuff I missed in the picture vault (especially from older eras), but then there'll also be stuff that was never in it. Because of the nature of Tumblr – you post everything gradually, not all at once – it will be a while until everything is on there, but there'll be two posts each day. Trying to vary it up so it's not all one era at once. If I remember (unlikely), I'll post some highlights in this thread every week or so. If anyone else sees something they find interesting on there, please feel free to share it in this thread or in the picture threads yourself. Finally, I've added the "search by eras" option to the original post. It's not the picture vault, but hopefully it'll become pretty close in time.7 points

A good friend texted me today to tell me he finally listened to this album in full. He gave it a good review and said it’s reminiscent of the AI and 21cb days. He hasn’t been a fan of their work since 21cb. This is honestly a true return to form for the band. It’s really delivered for the fans. I think critics even scored it slightly lower than what it actually is.7 points

Just to add a little more to the Fancy Sauce discussion, I think it's important take into account the context in which each album came out. With 21CB, the Obama era was just starting out, and it was completely fitting to end such a heavy album for its time on a hopeful and uplifting note. But with Saviors, the future is looking grimmer and grimmer, with climate change, the rise of autocratic leaders, the space race and all the mental health problems that social media brought along. So while Fancy Sauce is quite a dark song that concludes that yes, there are no saviors, it has a sense of catharsis that's reinforced with the sing-along nature of the chorus. As I hear the song, I feel that I'm not alone, we're all in this madness together. It would be very fitting to end an album with such dark topics on a cynical and bitter note, but instead with this song, I get a weird feeling of relief, like you're looking around in a crowd thinking "you too?" There's also something quite poignant in the repetition of the line "we all die young someday", which is even highlighted in the last page of the booklet. I think of that line as the understanding that no matter if we live 30 years or 90 years, it's never gonna be enough, I'll always fall short and die too young. As someone living in my late 20s, I worry a lot about not having the time to achieve all my dreams, as I imagine a lot of people do, but I now notice there's peace that comes with the realization that I'll never have enough time and letting go of my expectations, so at the end of the day, it's like saying "fuck it, I'm gonna take what I can get!" I could go on and on about it, but as I'm writing this down, I'm feeling quite silly for having such strong reactions for a song called Fancy Sauce tbh 😅7 points

I got my signed CD! 🥹 My friends have gotten signed stuff from their favorite artists and I never thought it was something that would matter to me. But I’ve been so excited to get this and just stared at it for like 15 minutes lol. Very cool and special.6 points

I think it was the Broadway musical that caused them to rush into the trilogy. Billie was creatively charged in 2010-2011 like never before he’d come home from playing St Jimmy and write songs every night. They went right into the next project because he had like 60-70 songs5 points

GDA has landed on Tumblr! https://greendayauthority.tumblr.com/ Follow for daily photos, quotes, fanart and more! If there's something you'd like us to reblog, like your fanart or photos from a show, feel free to let us know here or on Tumblr. Now you can search the GDA Tumblr by era: And by side project: And there's a tag for other stuff but nothing on it yet.4 points

Billie on Fell for You from Rolling Stone 2020 article: "Let’s just write a gooey bubblegum song about dreams and love and crushes and all the stuff that kind of keeps us alive. Those things never really stop as you get older. You always come across people that you want to spend time with, but you have to be realistic about it. When you’re a kid, it’s OK to be more impulsive. When you grow up, it can cause a lot of wreckage in your life, so it’s best to maybe write a song about it." It was mentioned in another thread that the songs were written during the AI on Broadway era so the lyrics in Fell for You make sense that Billie likely developed strong feelings for someone during that time. "Break a leg and you crush my heart" for example.4 points

I actually used one of my old signatures for the trilogy one! I have very fond memories of those times. That's the main reason I'm still doing this to be honest. I've calmed down as a Green Day fan (hard to believe, I know ) but GDA and GDC have very special places in my heart and I want to do my part to keep them going.4 points

I haven’t watched all the footage yet but didn’t he start with a more formal jacket and end up with a leather one? Hey, if he wants to show us his tats or his biceps, we’ll take it 😁❤️4 points

Yeah I don't think there's any question that it refers to the street. I don't remember which interview it was but when asked about the record label and clothing line, Billie said the street was significant to him as such a major street in Oakland. Green Day also used to hang out and practice at the Adeline Records clubhouse before Studio 880 and then Otis. I hadn't thought of it meaning driving out of Oakland but that's possible, kind of like Taxi Driver.3 points

To answer the question: HE IS!! Take into consideration his absolute hardcore voice impression in Take Back and short "SHAA" in Castaway.3 points

Looks like Billie uncovered an old box with some copies of "Look for Love" "Look for Love 1977 original pressing" From Mike From Kevin and Ryan Baxley spotted a Saviors billboard From Green Day's Instagram story3 points

Those are all very cool parts! But there's cool bass parts in pretty much every song on Saviors and like @Lauren said, he's playing "lead bass" again on this record like he did in the 90's, which really elevates the record and is an essential element of the "classic Green Day sound." So for me, as much as I love the trilogy, and those moments you pointed out are certainly highlights, Saviors just has Mike doing what he does best in a way the last two records typically don't. And you're absolutely right about the Baby Eyes demo. Love that intro.3 points

The bass wasn’t taking as much of a priority in the mix post-Warning. Not insulting his playing at all. Of course there became a lot more instruments to compete with. He no longer plays “lead bass” like when they were only a trio, but I do notice the bass standing out more than it’s been lately *aside* from solos. Obviously a bass solo you’re gonna hear the bass really well, but I don’t know I just think this album is mixed really well because the bass feels more expressive than AI, while still feeling very big (unlike the trilogy which, while I enjoyed it, felt more like a record my friends made in their bedroom than the stadium rock band the band has become — but again, I like both — oddly enough I find 21st CB to be the worst produced album). I’m not trying to say Mike’s playing is better on any one record — just that the mix of Saviors makes me start to feel it’s better than AI. However, I do much prefer the drum sounds of AI … the snare drum in some of these Saviors songs doesn’t feel very snarey to me, if that makes sense. I LOVE the big guitar sound in AI, but I also love Saviors for feeling like the guitars vary a lot more onto song in tone.3 points

Yes, I think Fancy Sauce is trying to answer the question Saviors leaves us with and comes to the conclusion that there is no one who can save us. The world is desperately looking and asking for a savior, maybe even a new messiah, but no one answers, no one's there. Jesus quit his job. We're left alone in the chaos of the apocalypse, and the only thing we can do about it now is shrug and smile like the boy on the cover while the world around us is burning. I agree that this is very dark (probably even the darkest GD album) and somewhat unsatisfactory, but itsn't it a feeling we all share in these troubled times? That we're all doomed, that it's too late to change the world for a better? I actually think this is the main motif of the record. It's depressing, yes. But sadly, it's also very true.3 points

I just played Saviors in the car and I started the album at Goodnight Adeline and looped around because I wanted to give the later songs more streams and I’ve heard the singles so much. Got to hear this twice by the end I really love it3 points

I’m not sure I agree with this. I’m consistently pleasantly surprised by how Green Day is talked about in general spaces — random subreddits, social media comment sections. Green Day has a ton of goodwill (from everyone other than conservatives who hate their politics, obviously). Their old music makes people nostalgic, and now even American Idiot is 20 years old and there’s a new wave of nostalgia for that “newer” music, too. I see comments regularly about how they seem like good dudes, people think it’s cool they still call out politics, how great they are as live performers, etc. I haven’t seen iHeart mentioned outside of a Green Day space in years. I’m not under the impression they have a bad reputation with general listeners at all. Now 12 years on, I think the iHeart incident is probably similar to how people will look at Will Smith’s Oscar outburst — a strange and inappropriate moment, but one people recognize as being out of character for that person/more complicated than someone just being bratty, and not representative of them generally.2 points

Do we even know if they're in a monogamous relationship? Maybe they're cool with a bit of side action now and then. I mean, Billie has written songs about other girls throughout his career, with at least one appearing to be more recent, post-AI. This suggests he either had a bit of a fling or caught feelings for someone else, but it doesn't look like it messed with his marriage or anything. Aside from possible cheating implications, I don't like digging into their personal stuff, as it's their business. But I can't help but wonder about some songs. Stay the Night, Stray Heart, Suzie Chapstick and others all seem to be telling bits of the same story somehow.2 points

I'm thinking Adeline is a very long street in Oakland (goes all the way to Berkeley if I remember right). Could be Goodnight Adeline in that sense like driving out of Oakland? I'm crap with words so hope this makes sense2 points

Well it's a trilogy so of course it's not going to be as "consistent" but there's at least 8 or 9 songs on the trilogy where Mike really stands out on the trilogy and not just because he's louder on the mix but because the basslines are actual pretty great. Off the top of my head: Nuclear Family, Kill the DJ, Makeout Party, Stray Heart, Nightlife, Dirty Rotten Bastards, Missing You all have stand out basslines on the trilogy. The little bass solo on the Baby Eyes demo is also fantastic and I wish that made it onto the studio version. It just sounds so much less interesting when it doesn't open up with that bassline. I pretty much never listen to the studio version of Baby Eyes solely for that reason. I would absolutely put Mike's work on the trilogy above Saviors and it's not even really close imo2 points
-
I love the trilogy and there's a few moments where Mike is really allowed to shine, but not as consistently as on this record.2 points

The best song on the album and the only song I've heard since probably AI which on the first attempt made me feel like an excited teenager listening to my favourite band again. Problem is, I absolutely caned it pre-release so it's a skip for me at the moment. 😆2 points

Nah, the bass on this album is absolutely on fire. They let Mike off the leash for an entire album for the first time since the 90's and it's glorious!2 points
