I don’t know where the idea that no one cares about the band anymore comes from. There are tons of other bands that only get a fraction of the attention that Green Day is getting with this new album. The days of Dookie and AI are over, but the new album just charted at no. 1 in the UK. Tons of small artists can only dream of this. They are literally selling out some of the biggest venues in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m kind of a nerd myself when it comes to the numbers, but there’s no need to constantly downplay the band’s achievements. And why is everyone so obsessed with rap and pop music? There is a lack of variety when it comes to mainstream music, but that doesn’t mean that certain genres are automatically bad. Don’t forget that there were and still are many people who talk the same way about Green Day. I’m pretty sure that’s not what the spirit of punk rock is all about.10 points

#4 in the USA. 49,000 sold units according to Billboard https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/21-savage-american-dream-second-week-number-one-billboard-200-albums-chart-1235591015/7 points

Dang, even less than the estimated 51,000? The fact that it's not THAT much more than the 31k units that the album got in the UK really just shows how much more popular the band is in the UK than the US now. FOAMF even got to no. 1 on the UK charts and like Saviors, reached #4 on the US Billboard 200. But Saviors seems to have done better than FOAM in the UK, getting 31k units in its first week while FOAMF got 24k, while Saviors doesn't really seem to have done any better than FOAMF in the US. With that being said, I think Saviors will do better than FOAMF in the long run. Just the fact that people are enjoying it more means that more people will be listening to it years from now than how many people are still listening to FOAMF6 points

Oh lol. Well I don't think that's that unusual at this point. There are a lot of more mainstream artists who are much more successful on a streaming front but do a lot worse in terms of album sales and/or digital downloads. Look at other big rock bands and their latest albums probably wouldn't have gotten much higher Speaking of spotify... Spotify update Bobby Sox - 2,945,138 (+136k) 1981 - 1,527,428 (+92k) Goodnight Adeline - 1,422,945 (+78k) Coma City - 1,241,253 (+62k) Corvette Summer - 1,251,160 (+65k) Suzie Chapstick - 1,258,432 (+73k) Strange Days Are Here to Stay - 1,176,934 (+65k) Living in the '20s - 1,136,717 (+64k) Father to a Son - 988,324 (+52k) Saviors - 966,567 (+52k) Fancy Sauce - 930,003 (+51k)6 points

I doubt this song will ever grow on me because I just don't like the sound of it, but that's a shame because I get the sentiment and it's lovely. I don't think it necessarily refers to the scandal. Parenting puts everyone "to the test," but even more so if there are additional challenges (like fame and addiction in Billie's case). The "love scarier than anger" line doesn't have to refer to actually being angry; it's comparing a parent's love to one of the strongest emotions that everyone can understand, even if they never have kids, because we've all experienced frightening anger at some point. I never had the chance to get angry with my kid but I get that line. There's nothing quite like the unconditional love that hits you like a train when you become a parent, and it can be terrifying, especially when you're young.6 points

Oh yeah I don't think it's referring to the scandal. It's just that being aware of/picturing the dumb kid the song is about is distracting lol5 points

Is it just me or did promotion somwhow stop a week ago? Beside reposting stuff Green Day are very quite on social media since a few days 😅5 points

Whatever happened to the love for 21CB? It's the 15th anniversary of that album this year too. I get that Dookie and AI are taking the spotlight because they are the most influential album's and they are more impactful anniversaries, but it makes me sad that 21CB is getting left in the dust. Honestly, I would much prefer hearing 21CB and AI in full rather than Dookie. Or even Insomniac. Dookie has never really been that high up on my list of favorites and that's probably unusual, but that's how I feel. It's depressing that there isn't really a chance of hearing 21CB in full again until like 2029. I wish they could celebrate it this year. I'm so happy that I will get to hear AI live in its entirety, but 21CB is so special to me because it's the album that got me into Green Day in the first place. AI and 21CB together would be a real monster of a show. I'm not sure if the boys would be able to pull that off without completely exhausting themselves every night. Dookie's a pretty short album, but 21CB is up there in length with AI. That would be my dream concert, though.5 points

So since the album's been out a while, here's my tier list for the songs from Saviors S - Coma City, Living in the 20s, 1981, Corvette Summer, Saviors A - Dilemma, TADIKM, Bobby Sox, Goodnight Adeline, Strange Days Are Here To Stay, Father to a Son B - Look Ma, No Brains, Fancy Sauce C - One Eyed Bastard, Suzie Chapstick 11/15 songs being in S/A tier is great. Even if the album doesn't end up being as commercially successful as we want it to be, it's still a quality album that I will continue to return to over the years4 points
-
It would’ve been awesome to see them higher on that list, but #4 is still really good! I also thought this was an interesting tidbit: “Green Day’s Saviors starts at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 49,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 39,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week).” Physical media is alive and well in Green Day world.4 points

I'm going through all the Green Day stuff I've saved over the years for the GDA Tumblr and I found this – a screenshot of the booking screen for tickets to the American Idiot musical on Broadway. Random but there probably aren't any other screenshots of it floating around now. That was the first time I saw the musical and I still get the warm fuzzies thinking about it.4 points

GD are very much a legacy band now. I’m not surprised the numbers aren’t great. We’re all old as fuck and the cool kids are listening to Swedish songwriters and trap beats.4 points

I just wanted to update all the newly released songs when the album released If you want to see how all the tracks have done this week, look here4 points

Spotify update Bobby Sox - 2,808,658 (+195k) 1981 - 1,435,643 (+113k) Goodnight Adeline - 1,344,815 (+99k) Coma City - 1,178,762 (+79k) Corvette Summer - 1,186,150 (+85k) Suzie Chapstick - 1,185,153 (+93k) Strange Days Are Here to Stay - 1,112,111 (+82k) Living in the '20s - 1,072,785 (+83k) Father to a Son - 935,976 (+68k) Saviors - 914,914 (+66k) Fancy Sauce - 879,406 (+70k) At this point, we're starting to see the amount of streams each track is getting per day change. The numbers don't seem to just be based on the track order on the album. For example, Coma City isn't getting as many daily listens as the following 4 tracks now. (Idk why, it's my favourite track). And Fancy Sauce has got more listens today than the previous two tracks4 points

Were there really that many people who would've bought or listened to Saviors who didn't already know Green Day's opinions on Trump and just conservatism in general? I mean, I'm sure there were some fans who probably boycotted the band but I think there were just as many people who responded to Elon Musk's complaining about the band who were making fun of him for not understanding the song he was criticizing was already a fundamentally anti-right wing song and if anything, I think it's possible that there was a net positive for the band from that because it only gave them more attention and a lot of people would've come out of that just thinking Green Day is more based than they thought. Before that, I'm sure a lot of the people complaining or praising the band for the lyric change in the AI performance just wouldn't have known Green Day were still making new music or had a new album coming.3 points

Hopefully, Saviors can last longer on the Billboard 200 than FOAMF did. Like you said, that album debuted at #4 in the US as well, but it fell off the chart very very quickly. I think that Saviors can potentially stick around in the public consciousness for much longer due to all of the positive buzz that the album has been getting. Keep streaming folks!!! 👍🏻3 points

I was expecting Father to a Son to become one of the more successful songs on the album because it’s a ballad, and Green Day has a pretty good track record with such songs. Looks like I was wrong. But Suzie Chapstick seems to be a bit of a fan favorite.3 points

I woke up at 3 am and couldn’t fall back asleep. This song was playing on a loop in my head. Love this song, but it was slightly torturous in that scenario. Still an earworm even when I’m sleep deprived!3 points

I love the cover and CD design but the case is absolute garbage. I don't mind a cardboard case as it's better for the environment but I've never had one that won't stay closed like this before. If you put it down flat it stays open at a 75 degree angle3 points

For me as well as enjoying the album and looking forward to seeing them on the tour, this album has totally reignited my love for the band (not that it went away but it ebbs and flows) so I'm going to be enjoying revisiting their entire discography and watching old music videos/etc for a while.3 points

I wonder if, now that he's in a pretty good head space (or it appears so), his feelings would change on that matter. Maybe he'd really enjoy playing those songs live again if he approached it from a better place. Or maybe not. Who am I to say? I hope he changes his feelings about that, though. He worked so, so hard on that album and I would argue it's second only to AI. It's a shame that he associates the record with all of the stress and personal hardship he went through more intensely than the pride in having created something so wonderful. But I get it if it's really difficult for him to unlink that in his mind. A lot of the times it feels like no matter what we'd prefer to do, our brains have other ideas and won't listen to reason.3 points

I hope Dilemma has momentum and in some charts goes #1….Bobby Sox…I think will chart….then Goodnight Adeline or Father to a Som…before the summer tour…hopefully will chart and get music videos and a push…REV RAD…had 2 number #1’s with Bang Bang (should open every show)…and then Still Breathing was another #1….and Nice Guys Finish last came out over a year after Nimrod was released so I hope we get 5 months or more of videos and singles before the tour3 points

Te truth about ,,mainstream'' reviewers is that a lot of them don't pay enough attention.. to be able to reliably rate new music. Nowadays The art of reviewing often comes down to choosing sophisticated words - using as many epithets and metaphors as possible. Sometimes I come to the conclusion that some reviews often need to be reviewed as well. Because instead of a reliable musical analysis with thorough refrences to songs structure etc., we get some manifestation od graphomania, shallow poetry-like reviews. Lot of words, little knowledge.3 points

The main criticism I’ve seen is putting Father To A Son after Living in the Twenties. It is a really abrupt change but I still like it3 points

I will forever not love the double life that Billie seems to lead. Like, on stage or "in act", he gives off Freddie Mercury esque frontman/demi-god/avant-garde provocateur vibes. at home, he switches to ultra dad mode. Watching that interview is like having a zoom call with your slightly confused californian uncle who just this year discovered tiktok and contactless pay for the first time Dude, the camera angle and glasses... Shit's the funniest thing ever lmao3 points

I also feel like for promo, it’s largely down to the mix and how you’re hearing it? For example, I agree the XM radio recording for the Saviors songs didn’t sound great (later in the show he sounded good IMO), but then watching videos from people who were there, he sounds totally fine because his vocals aren’t so isolated.3 points

There are still plenty of people listening to Green Day and there will be for decades to come. Even if the new albums aren't getting a lot of listens, their biggest albums/songs will be remembered fondly for generations regardless of the state of rock in the mainstream Can you guys stop talking about the current mainstream music / hip hop being shit. It's honestly just getting really repetitive. Nobody cares if you guys hate pop and rap Where are you getting that 109 position? The Billboard charts haven't updated yet, right?2 points

I don't remember if I once knew Tre was holding a block of half-eaten cheese on this photo but forgot, or if I've only just noticed it, but anyway, Tre is holding a half-eaten block of cheese. @Rumpelstiltskin2000 inspiration for the Paris camembert?2 points

Yeah ‘Saviors’ has some great flow and it feels like it was intentionally ordered better than record GD records. It has natural breaks and some really pumping runs of songs.2 points

You can still shuffle albums on Spotify, it’s just no longer the default option like it was (thanks to Adele who requested that feature be changed). There’s a shuffle symbol next to the play button to shuffle if you want. Some artists still put a lot of thought and effort into the track order and want people to hear it that way, like many of us used to. Adele is one of those artists apparently. So is Green Day. They might have front loaded the singles but I think they still are intentional with their track order for the most part.2 points

Apparently Dilemma is going to be making its debut on the US rock charts https://hitsdailydouble.com//igen&id=339359&title=YOUR-RADIO-CHART-PREVIEWS Also Dilemma is apparently on the Canada Rock chart at #35 https://www.billboard.com/artist/green-day/chart-history/car/ Bobby Sox, One Eyed Bastard & TADIKM are also on the UK Rock/Metal chart at 23, 27 & 37 respectively https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/rock-and-metal-singles-chart/20240126/111/2 points

Being a singer isn't for everyone; can you imagine singing in a concert for 2 hours without missing a note? (Imagine doing that every two days on a tour!) I can't even get through a song without burping 😅 I have a preference for his voice around 2009, but I really liked the adjustment in his voice in "Saviors." In recent years, he's been struggling a bit to maintain the same pace, and I appreciate that. For me, what matters is that they're still active and performing at a high level. I hope he ages well and stays healthy to continue bringing us joy.2 points
