  4. It's amazing seeing Green Day being the most talked about thing in the world again.

  5. This era has been giving me so much life. Usually around now with the shitty weather and the lack of holidays, my SAD kicks in bad. But Green Day has given me something to look forward to and we keep getting blessed with new pictures and interviews from this era. It's so nice. On top of that, I've been having so much fun on the thread. I'm always lurking on GDC, but the surge of activity had been keeping me sane, especially at work. Whenever I need a break from angry emails or managing someone's calendar, I just come to GDC for more Saviors discourse. And it's a nice change of pace. The forum was so divided on FOAM and seeing the barrage of negative opinions kind of brought everything down. It's been so nice reading everyone's thoughts on the album and just the general excitement that's in the air. The boys are truly back.

  6. I want this album to perform well because I know the band is really proud of it and for them, it would just be really cool to see Saviors get the recognition it deserves. On a personal level, I love it no matter what and definitely don’t care what that YouTube guy thinks. It would just be sweet to see it chart and stream well because I think that’s validating for any artist. Green Day makes music for the right reasons — because they love it, not accolades — but I’m sure accolades still feel great!

  7. HEY OH That should be the name of the record

  8. I'm not sure why we keep mentioning this guy. He clearly doesn't car for Green Day, so naturally he's gonna rate their work poorly. His opinions and reviews shouldn't matter to us. And if his audience shares his views, they're not relevant to us either. They aren't the target audience for the band, so there's little point in discussing their opinions. He's free to dislike Saviors and anything else Green Day does, I just don't see why his name keeps coming up in this forum. Not a jab at you or anyone else, just wondering that's all.

  9. I’m sad this channel is ending tomorrow. I’ve loved all the little backstories the guys provided and just hearing such a wild mix of their songs. I think this was an awesome way to showcase how diverse their catalog is.

  10. To see articles in People and The New Yorker of all places. It's been years since they've had this kind of mainstream attention. This goes beyond promo, this is momentum. I think this album is gonna be huge.

  12. Well they just completed one of the biggest stadium tours of that year and millions of people came out to see them so I’d say they’re still on plenty of people’s radars

  16. So to keep track, folks that want IE include: @jengd @Rumpelstiltskin2000 @Robbie1039 @DeJennsitized @killjoywhatsername Please DM your address. Don't know if I'll get to the post office this weekend. Depends on how cold it is! Right now @okotavio expressed interest in the Rolling Stone cover. There's one more issue of IE up for grabs! Also, this has turned out quite lovely! Trades among fans is a nice reminder of how great this community is.

  19. I thought the same. Sometimes it takes a health scare to really motivate you into changing your habits whether it be alcohol, drugs, diet or whatever. Especially after 50. When I think of how unhealthy he looked in the Daily Mail in September of 2022 it kind of scared me at the time. He's spoken multiple times about waking up in stranger's apartments, on park benches etc...When the Tik Tok video happened in Summer of 2022, that could have created a problem between them also. Must be so scary for her not knowing where he was at those times. I can't even imagine. Glad he's doing well now...and looking so healthy and at peace. 🖤

  21. I guess I'm too late to the party but if you have any spare ones, I'd be happy to get them! Currently I am scanning all my GD magazines (incl. foreign ones with exclusive photos) and books that are not too widely available in HQ since it's a hassle to scan, edit the images, etc. - and yes, I'm going to post the archive when I'm done and after the new album hype is "over"

  23. No worries. Pitchfork is merging into men's magazine GQ and losing their main staff aka Pitchfork is dead in a way. And Green Day will win a Grammy for this album too. Nice Guys Finish Last.

  24. I was thinking about this when I listened to the Irving Plaza show - he sounded kind of strained during the Saviors part of the set compared to the older stuff. I hope he takes care of his voice during the tour… just American Idiot sung through is a lot. 🥺

  25. I love his voice throughout all eras. Also, I love that he’s never been a perfect singer. Give me those human moments of imperfection!
    4 points
  26. I think it's totally normal that the voice changes over the years. No 50 year old sounds like when he was 20. But by the way, I think some songs off Saviors could be straight off 21stCB or the Trilogy in terms of how his voice sounds.

  28. It's okay, a wonderful GDCer has offered to send me one but thanks anyway I've checked what I had and there are four spare Playbills (I must have given some away and not remembered or it's so long ago I'd just forgotten how many spares I picked up) and six NME's. So @The Grohl @DeJennsitized @Robbie1039 and @Montclarewere the first four to ask so will receive a copy of the Playbill (I'm really, really sorry I misjudged how many I had left). The NME's will go to @Montclare @Robbie1039 @killjoywhatsername jengd @The Grohl @DeJennsitized

  30. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an overwhelmingly positive response to one of their albums since I joined GDC in 2010. No matter the fandom, people get nitpicky and fight because you’re just so deep into whatever the thing is you’re a fan of. It’s easier to be critical and easier to take stuff for granted. This period has been SO happy and Saviors seems like something most fans agree they love, which is awesome. The vibes around the band are also a complete opposite of the FOAM vibes, which I personally very badly needed. This entire era has been wonderful. I feel like I stepped into an alternate universe of what I wanted the era post-RevRad to feel like. I took the longest break I ever had from Green Day over the past few years and it was shitty. I missed this so much. And started doing crazy (but good!) shit like “MAYBE ILL READ 52 BOOKS A YEAR” to try to fill the endless void they leave when they’re not in my life lol. (It didn’t work. I think I was really sad the past few years when I think about myself then vs now.)

  31. Fantano's name keeps coming up because he is one of the most famous music critics on YouTube. I often respect his opinions shared in his Weezer reviews — he's actually a fan of their good stuff, such as the first two albums, OK Human, and the White Album. But, I always feel that he's unfair in his critical analysis of new Green Day music. I think Saviors! is quite strong, and I'm stoked for this new era. The guys seemed pumped and are putting a lot of effort into this.

  32. Maybe it depends on the point of view whether this song speaks to you or not. I'm not a parent, so I don't know that perspective and I'm only reading the song with the eyes of a child (son or daughter probably doesn't even matter so much). To me it sounds like a letter of apology for all the things and moments he missed with his son. I had a father who (like Billie) was absent very much because he travelled a lot and he missed so many important moments in my childhood and youth (birthdays, graduation from school or college etc.). You can never have those moments back. Realizing that must be painful. He promises you to never break your heart, but at the same time, he knows he's lying because he did break it so many times before. Maybe the "a place you want more than I can give" line is even literally about a place where father and child should be together, but never really get there together because the father is gone so much and when he returns, the child is already somewhere else because he's growing up and things change so fast. I don't know, maybe I'm reading way too much into this because I'm still mourning, but somehow this song sounds like a letter my Dad could have written to me to say "I'm sorry I missed so much."

  33. Completely agree with you. I think we have to start to ignore this dude. He doesnt like Green Day and thats fine, but he keeps reviewing stuff like in such a cynical way just to throw shit on them. I dont care at all about what people may think of this record, fantano and hid fanbase even less. Im so grateful for this record to exist, its all i care, i'm very much satisfied with this.

  34. I thought Green Day were too mainstream for Pitchfork to talk about 🙄 At this point I think Fantano just wants to rile up Green Day fans. He knows they'll hate watch his review so what does it matter to him? I don't care if he didn't like saviors. My beef with him is he doesn't seem to like Green Day at all so why is he still bothering? That's like if I reviewed a Coldplay record and said I hated it even though I've never liked the band to begin with.

  36. I tend to agree. The more I listen, I find the orchestration and the melody gorgeous, it's an enjoyable listen, but unlike similar songs like When it's Time or WMUWSE, the lyrics just don't touch me emotionally. I'm not finding a relatable hook to hang on to, even as a parent. I don't know if its because I can't separate this from the thought of Joey (and fuck Joey) or if there's some deeper statement on parenthood that the song gets close to but doesn't quite reach. I'm not sure I understand the words of the chorus completely either, they're a little vague. I know I stated earlier that there were emotional aspects to it for me, but they're a stretch and the song has diminishing returns.

  37. My wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying the Green Day channel. From the playlist of deep cuts, to fitting segue ways (someone who is a fan has to be programming this, like "Welcome to Paradise" in to "Sweet 16"), to song intros, and now the Irving Plaza show. It's excellent.

  41. 100% agree. I love it when he does that, it's like he's putting the songs into a time machine to make them more relevant than ever (back to the future, haha). Then it suddenly feels like he wrote them yesterday. This also reminds me of the 2022 Berlin show (and I think he did it at other shows on that tour too) where he changed the lyrics to Wake Me Up When September ends and sang "Like my father's come to pass 40 years has gone so fast". It broke me because I had just lost my fathers a few months ago, and I realized: The pain will never cease, no matter if it's 1 or 20 or 40 years ago

  43. For some reason GDC went weird on me when I put in the last lot of usernames so sorry if it looks weird. @killjoywhatsernamecould you DM me your address to send the NME. I tried to DM you but it wouldn't let me for some reason. I was wrong about the front cover. Billie is on the second page like this Cover Second page Playbill @jengd could you also send your address for the NME? Just noticed that American Nightmare page is kind of relevant to TADIKM too even though it's from 2016/17 Oh and someone DM'd me for the CD the minute I posted about it so I'm afraid that's gone too

  44. Lol once you hear it you can’t unhear it! That was a thing people loved to point out back in 2009 when it came out, ha. Thanks for listening! And yes, I’ve been seriously lucky over the years. Thanks Dude! We should get you on the podcast one of these days! Yeah our goal is 1,039 smoothed out hours of podcasting lol

  45. I made a reddit post a while back listing all the songs which have (audible) hand claps https://www.reddit.com/r/greenday/comments/15ll12j/all_songs_that_have_hand_claps_in_them/ With the exception of Words I Might Have Ate which has hand claps at the end, hand claps were basically absent from Green Day's music until American Idiot where it started to occasionally pop up. You can really see the frequency of hand claps increase starting with RevRad. RevRad has 4 songs which contain hand claps. Then Love is For Losers uses them for 7/10 songs. And finally they're used in every song on FOAMF. While I think the complaint has been overblown considering hand claps are far from the biggest problem FOAM has, it is something that was completely overused and didn't really add anything. The hand claps were also more prominent in later songs whereas in earlier songs, they were more in the background just adding a little bit extra. I think the band are aware of the criticism considering the new album doesn't seem to have hand claps in them and the only demo that we heard (One Eyed Bastard) did originally have them but the final version doesn't seem to. I don't think any of you will be surprised to hear that fantano rated this album a 3/10 (the same rating he gave RR). There's absolutely nothing this band could possibly do which would make him give them anything higher than maybe a 5/10

  49. I think Billie changing the lyrics to songs just shows how timeless his lyrics are. It’s seldom he writes something that feels dated. I know there are some references that date parts of some songs, but overall they still feel relevant.
