  1. From what I’ve read I believe it’s more about the struggles of being a father after living life for many years without one. So I don’t think it’s about Joey but obviously he’s a father to him so he’s essentially part of the concept. Maybe he feels partly responsible or feels like he let him down in some way as a father? I think the song will be deep and I don’t think you’ll be done with the band when we get the lyrics and hear the song.

  5. I don’t understand why this is crossing a line when there’s a Green Day Rock Band game, they were featured on the Twilight soundtrack, etc. I could not care less about what commercial opportunities they take. I think it’s probably a good thing for rock music to be featured anywhere in a more mainstream way right now, actually. Many big rock artists have had their songs used in movies or shows or whatever. I don’t think it’s weird at all. The Green Day Reddit vibes are bizarre.

  6. I really liked the overall relaxed conversational energy of the interviewers and the band in this one.

  7. People who think American Idiot is just average clearly haven't heard it in a long time and are letting their current views of the band influence their opinion on it. Every time I listen to that record start to finish, I'm impressed by how amazing it is. It truly is a masterpiece, no matter what people say.

  8. Honestly, I've always just considered the Golden Age of Green Day to be Dookie-21CB but I might have to throw the trilogy in to that Golden Age. And ik a lot of people would really disagree with me there, I've always acknowledged how flawed the trilogy is but there are so many songs on there that are just straight up fire. It's not as consistent as the 94-09 stuff but a trilogy can't really be that consistent. I'm overall really happy with how the trilogy turned out and think it's the best thing they've done post-21CB. It's better than RevRad, it's better than Longshot, it's for sure better than FOAMF and the new Network album imo. I won't be surprised if I end up preferring the trilogy to Saviors, I hope that's not the case but I think the trilogy is genuinely pretty great Talking of people not listening to albums anymore, instead just popular songs. I can't stand the fact that people are hearing Longview without hearing Chump before it. Or Brain Stew without Jaded. And not even just songs that transition. But when I hear Basket Case on its own, I immediately expect to hear She. When I listen to Panic Song, I can just hear the bass intro to Stuart and the Ave.. Playlists and just picking and choosing songs can be great but I can't imagine not listening to albums. A 9/10 album is so much more impactful than a playlist full of 10/10 songs that don't connect to each other imo

  9. We shouldn’t forget that these guys had an incredible run between Dookie and 21CBD. All of their albums, even those that were considered commercial failures at the time, sold millions of copies worldwide. Dookie and AI were obviously massive, but all of their other releases were successful too. And the songs from these albums are still very popular. They have a lot of monthly listeners on Spotify, more than most of their contemporaries, and they still have the ability to fill stadiums with their music. That tells me that they’re definitely not irrelevant or unpopular. It’s true that there’s less interest in their new material but that has nothing to do with the quality of the songs. It’s not like no one will listen to the new record. Even FOAM debuted at #1 in various countries. I obviously want the band to do well, but I also think we’re kind of spoiled. Additionally, I feel like they don’t even want to be the center of attention anymore. Billie isn’t like Dave Grohl who gives like 30 interviews a day. I mean look at the Foo Fighters, they even had their own horror movie last year. That’s just something that Green Day wouldn’t do, and I’m kind of happy about that. They don’t do collaborations, they don’t appear on TV that often and while I’d sometimes love to see more of them, I also understand this approach. They have nothing to prove anymore, why not take it easy?

  10. Objectively, I believe that radio airplay is to blame. American Idiot got the airplay it deserved but now it’s been beaten to death after all these years. It’s the U2 effect essentially. I feel like radio stations have 30+ years of material to work with yet they ALWAYS go back to Dookie and AI. I occasionally hear Brain Stew on the radio. I was with casual listeners at that time and I saw a positive response there. But when AI songs or Dookie songs come on theyre ok to turn even if I’m enjoying it because it’s something that’s so accessible and has been heard so many times. Also they’re not the new thing and it’s not a reunion or limited time thing. The next time Green Day will be as big as they were during AI will be after one of the band member’s funeral unfortunately. I’ve seen constructive criticisms of the album that I disagree with but can respect. American Idiot is a unique album so it won’t resonate with everyone. I once had a friend who loved the record but eventually turned on the album. He didn’t like their look or approach but he did admit the music was good but he felt like he couldn’t support the gimmick. Years later he was rocking out to the trilogy and told me this is the way he preferred it. Green Day is a massive entity with so many different eras. They honestly are just too big and cant make everyone happy. But theyve also have chosen to walk out of the public eye just a tad. Very rare you see them on tv anymore. Some of it is self imposed.

  12. I think that "TikTok and taxes" fits very well because this part of the verse is written from a republican-conservative perspective. They hate immigation, tiktok and taxes. And the following part is sort of the answer from people who sleep in broken glass because the american dream didn't care for them. In addition the whole song reminds me about the line in JOS "in a land of make believe, that don't believe in me".

  13. It's okay if they're not a big hit anymore. They're in their 50s and they had two incredibly successful albums for crying out loud. They're at a point in their careers and their lives where they're allowed to make and enjoy playing new music without having the fear of becoming irrelevant. They've got nothing to prove anymore. It might be sad to never see them reach those heights again, but it also feels good to see how this is liberating for them. That pressure they (especially Billie) felt back in the 2000s is gone. And all that aside, they're still HUGE when it comes to rock bands. Everything's okay.

  14. The 8 millionth retelling of the sleepy story. And I wish they had all answered the worst tattoo questions. It's one that I always wanted asked in an interview. But love seeing Billie happy.

  17. I’m personally really excited to hear Father to a Son because as far as I recall, Billie has never really gotten vulnerable in a song about being a parent, but his family life is something he clearly values very much. It feels like uncharted territory for him, songwriting wise. I think the song will probably be about the impact of becoming a father had on him, and I’m looking forward to how he reflects on that.

  18. My favourite Green Day song since Bang Bang. It's just got all the energy that a Green Day song should have.

  19. People don’t buy music anymore so the only way to monetize the songs now is to license them to movies, TV and games. It’s a legitimate revenue stream in today’s reality. If people still bought records by the millions, this wouldn’t be as necessary (though still a good option for promotion)

  20. It was interesting when he mentioned the album making process and then said “sometimes you think you’re inspired and you’re not…” The interviewers should have chased this comment down but I wonder if that’s what happened with FOAM

  21. The placement of this interview in a mid-November episode is very misleading. I think they were interviewed at Louder Than Life, which took place like a whole month before TADIKM even dropped, so it wasn’t at a time when they’d be discussing the new album yet. That said, their interviews always make me so ridiculously happy so this was delightful to watch anyway.

  24. I'm sorry but "Billie loves his son" would absolutely not make it acceptable for Billie to publicly release a pro-Joey song at this point. Nobody is asking or expecting him to hate or disown his own son, he can fawn over Joey in private all he wants, but to publicly release a song praising him on the first GD album after the issue was revealed after not addressing or calling out his son's behaviour at all would not only be tone deaf but also downright insulting to Lydia and other victims of grooming/coercion/child abuse. It'd be a complete slap in the face to fans who have unfortunately had to experience something like that, especially since Billie/GD have presented themselves as supporters of women and victims their entire career. I'm really not expecting the song to be about Joey, mainly because I don't think anyone involved in this project would be dumb enough and/or outright cruel enough to let that happen, but on the off chance it does turn out to be, that will be me done with this band.

  26. I watched TikTok every day for a year. It was the worst my mental health has *ever* been by far. I think it is so dangerous for our emotional regulation, our attention spans, and our ability to distinguish between what matters on social media versus IRL. Not to mention the horrifying group think mentality on there. I was an adult experiencing all these terrible side effects of using it daily and finally figured out I needed to stop in order to feel better. What the heck does it do to kids and teens who use it and aren’t old enough to understand how it is negatively impacting them? I hate to sound like an old lady, but I genuinely do worry about what its long term impact will be on our society. I agree that Billie lumped it in with taxes because it’s just part of American life now.

  27. I could for sure see Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming being broken up into 10 tracks if it were released today. Would probably get much more streams as a whole even if less people end up listening to them. If they still sounded the same and transitioned into each other as they currently do, then it would still make for a great listen but it for sure hits better when they're taken as 2 long songs rather than 10 really short ones

  28. People shitting on AI isn't new. There were people at the time, who either didn't like the "new" sound/image, didn't like them speaking about politics/their positions, and this has continued. There's also people who just want to be contrarian. And like it's been said, rock just isn't the big thing now. I'd love for them to chart on the Billboard 100 again, but unless there's a shift, don't see it happening. As long as they keep doing well in the rock charts, I'm happy. It does concern me a bit that they went down in the hot rock/alternative/rock alternative charts this week, but they haven't really been promoting it this past week since they've been sick. Hopefully they'll start doing real interviews and going on talk shows and things will improve.

  29. People on reddit legitimately seem to be kinda mad that Green Day did this... Like why? They've appeared on countless movie soundtracks, video games, TV shows, NHL but this is the line for people?

  30. Fun but disappointing. People need to stop asking them about old stories and ask about something new, like the new album maybe!

  32. I don’t know how anyone can listen to American Idiot and not admit it’s an impressive album, even if the music isn’t your thing. Rewarding listen start to finish. Do people even listen to albums that way anymore? Maybe the fact that the singles were overplayed to death made people lose sight of how great these songs are.

  35. The 3 who did the interview with them were more exciting and into the band than Amazon. They didn‘t do a bad job tbh. Sure they could have ask them about the upcoming album but like mentioned before we don‘t know when the interview was shot. For me a good interview is when the band enjoys the questions or the interview and they did. Sure we didn‘t learn anything but they made me feel good and was great to listen (except the landing UFO 😂).

  36. Relax Drama Queen is a beautiful song and I wouldn’t take it literal it’s more of a metaphor meaning the woman is no on her own and can bleed by life being hurtful…the pedohile line is I think a clever way to call out a perverse obsession people have with social media in general again…not literally…father to son from interviews seems like it’s about Billies father….also free speech no ban or writer should be cancelled or exiled for words.

  39. I get the TikTok line. I’m not in pro-banning anything camp, but there’s plenty wrong with using TikTok and social media in general.

  40. Conservatives specifically single out TikTok for hatred because it’s GenZ’s app of choice for organizing against them politically. It’s a big reason behind why they wanted it banned.

  41. Clearly Billie needs to check with everyone in here before he writes a song so we can tell him which words he can and can not use. Collectively we all must be better song writers than him!
