  1. I honestly think people focus way too much on the "repetition". These songs really aren't that repetitive, at least not really any more than you'd expect from Green Day. The LMNB chorus only plays twice in the entire song and the pre-chorus also only plays twice (and the first time is only half the length of the 2nd). And like you said, none of the lines in the chorus (or pre-chorus) repeat TADIKM chorus plays 4 times, but the 2nd time is cut short and there are multiple switch ups in the song with the slow section after the 2nd chorus and a 3rd verse, which we don't often get. The pre-chorus also changes up every time it comes The Bada bings in OEB make up quite a small amount of the whole song. 1981 is the only one where I'd say "Yep that is just repetitive" but again no more so than so many songs from American Idiot onwards.

  2. Wikipedia says that Bang Bang debuted at #16 on Alternative Airplay (which was apparently called Alternative Songs back then) and at #17 on Mainstream Rock. So I guess it’s a similar start. To be fair, Green Day isn’t the only big rock band who’s facing these issues. Even the latest Blink album, which debuted at #1, sold less copies in its first week than California did back in 2016. Or look at the Foo Fighters. Their latest album was well received by critics yet didn’t really make a big commercial impact. But honestly, it doesn’t really matter. These bands have nothing to prove anymore. Green Day are among the biggest rock bands of all time. I guess people just love the classics so much that it’s hard for them to actually listen to new material. Still, I think that the new songs is well received by the fans and that’s actually the most important thing at this point. I’m pretty sure that the new record will be more successful than FOAM was. But most importantly, I’m happy that the guys are still putting out new material. That’s all I really want.

  3. That's not really comparable though, because in that clip he's just singing an octave deeper more generally. I think it's a combination of what @Ryan said and ageing that is to "blame" for his voice change. The "bellowing" effect on american idiot and during live performances is using a lot of chest voice which can and usually does, for a lot of people, especially singers, get weaker with age. So I think ageing changed his voice and consciously adapting to that process and in order not to strain his voice and permanently damage it (axl rose anyone?), he's choosing to use a different vocal technique. also let's not forget that part of the "deep vocals" effect on american idiot is down to filters, as you can hear clearly in this side-by-side comparison (15:45). Now yes, live and to some degree in the studio, he did put on a "bellowing voice" but it's likely that if he had kept doing that his voice would have worn out super quickly. I remember him sounding very strained throughout the early trilogy tour (2012). I think after going to rehab, he made a conscious effort to look after his voice more, which is why he has sounded more "high-pitched" since then. Plus that he took vocal lessons during the 21CB tour. So, yes, to some degree it's a choice (besides the fact that his voice has also generally got more high-pitched over time), but what kind of a choice is it if you're choosing between preserving your voice or permanently damaging it? again, love me some 2000s Billie vocals, anytime, but that age is well and truly gone now, so I'm happy he's even able to sing as well as he still is. How many 50+ year old rock singers do you know that sound as good as great as he does?

  4. I disagree, I think TADIKM is extremely catchy and works a lot better for the casual listener than LMNB, which has elements of Nimrod/Insomniac in it and although that's great for us fans, doesn't seem so much interesting to everyone else. I see TADIKM as a great first single, while LMNB, to me, isn't even single material. Even though I love the song. But hey, I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

  5. Idk, but I think it's a rather slow start, even by their own standards. I certainly don't think it's gonna hit 10M views / plays in 30 days like I originally predicted. That said, I'm slowly letting go of any attachment I had to commercial success and just appreciating the fact that it's a great song in its own right. For more than a decade, I've been obsessing way too much about how this band does commercially and it's unhealthy. Of course I want the band to do well, but it's beyond our control as fans. Even good marketing can only do so much, meaning it's largely beyond the control of the band too. Timing and the right "zeitgeist" at the time of release do a lot of the legwork and heavy lifting. They certainly did back in 1994 and 2004. and one other interesting aspect regarding the commercial aspect of things: whilst it's certainly a slow start, it seems to be very steady and consistent. I'll honestly take slow and steady any day over fast and chaotic. It's not a bad place to be for a band in their 50s with (soon) 14 studio albums under their belt. Let's have a decent and consistent album, all the way from song-writing/instrumentation to production. It's been a while since they've done one of those, so now feels like the perfect time for it.

  7. It's been said before but Look Ma, No Brains! would be such a killer album title too. I like the single artwork for it too.

  8. Here in Brazil I go to lots of pop punk, punk, and emo parties. These are genres that people usually identify Green Day as (regardless of whether or not GD is emo, ppl seem to conflate pop punk/emo these days, so let's not get into that). And honestly most of the people don't seem to care about the band nowadays. They have nostalgia for Dookie, American Idiot, and 21CB, and that's about it. I was at a party the other night and when the DJ played Basket Case and Holiday, everyone went crazy. A few minutes later, Bang Bang came in and nobody cared. I was one of the few who lost their minds lol My point is, people don't dislike Green Day, but they do seem to only care about their past material. I think it was the same thing with Blink until their reunion, which kind of drew attention to their new album. GD doesn't have that kind of narrative. The return of Rob and CLA is only relevant to us fans, but to the casual pop punk crowd that's meaningless. I'm guessing the new album will be as successful as RevRad, tops. I really wish the boys had a third big hit in them, but I don't think that's ever happening again. The world has changed.

  9. Idk why we're trying to determine whether a song will be good or a good closer based solely on its song title

  10. I’m ready! I am able to multi task. I could check for the the black undershirt and remove it and hold him down while @The Grohl deals with eyeliner and @Montclare dyes his hair. @Vintage Disciple what job are you hoping for… red socks, short sleeves?

  11. I vehemently disagree with you on Graffitia and Oh Love. Graffitia was a fantastic final track and Oh Love lyrically made perfect sense as the final track on Uno before going into Dos. LOL Tell me you don't work in film without telling me you don't work in film.

  15. Thanks this was great! Our first real interview about Saviors. Thank god for Rob Cavallo he recognized what was great and where they needed to push harder like always. Can’t wait for Father To A Son. Interesting comment too that he made about this time focusing more on the quality of the album than the tour. “An album is forever, a tour is one summer” Maybe as opposed to the last cycle where Hella Mega was definitely prioritized over FOAM. He couldn’t sound more excited about having new music out and for everyone to hear the album and that feels really good. And it wouldn’t be a Mike Dirnt interview without him saying “firing on all cylinders” and he did not disappoint 😂

  16. Not all songs need to be epic. I think finally having a modern song that actually sounds reminiscent of 90s Green Day is pretty dope. And I wouldn't say it's "standard GD" either, as we haven't heard that kind of sound in over 20 years.

  17. To be fair, it’s not like rock music doesn’t exist anymore and there are still rock bands (like Green Day) who can play massive tours and have (relatively) successful albums. The genre won’t just die but I feel like the popularity of rock acts isn’t measured in record sales and chart positions anymore. Instead, these bands live from their live performances. I’m sure there will always be good rock bands but they might not get the mainstream attention that bands like Green Day, the Foo Fighters or Blink got when they started.

  18. On Cancer is the New Black, it sounds to me like Billie and Mike are trading off with each other i.e. Mike singing one line followed by Billie etc. Idk, it doesn't sound like they're singing together

  20. I think the new Blink album has actually done really well. It performed worse than California in terms of total sales first week but I think it's the first rock band to debut at #1 in 2023. Albums sell less now than even just in 2016 so part of the decrease all these bands have seen in their sales are due to that. But One More Time is for sure going to end up surpassing California in terms of streams at some point, I'm quite confident in that. You can look at the units California (186k) & One More Time (125k) sold for their first week but when you look at how many of those units came from streaming, OMT beats California 24k to 14k The issue with albums like FOAM's album sales isn't just that it's less than that of the trilogy or RevRad. That's to be expected. It's HOW MUCH less than the trilogy/RevRad it is and how fast the sales plummeted after week 1.

  21. This 100% I check the streams over time that GD albums get sometimes and FOAMF started off slow and only got worse over time. Of course after a few months, every album stops getting listened to as much but it wasn't that long after its release that it started getting less daily streams than Uno, an album that was around a decade old, released when streaming was barely a thing and wasn't successful for the band at the time. It's been a while since I've checked how these albums are doing in terms of streaming but I wouldn't be too surprised if more people are listening to Dos & Tré on spotify at this point than FOAMF. If Saviors starts off pretty slow but consistently gets listened to by a sizeable number of Green Day fans, I can see it doing streaming numbers along the same lines to RevRad. It will probably also get some more album sales in its first few weeks than FOAMF did. I'm pretty sure album sales for FOAMF plummeted hugely after week 1. There was an article that's deleted now that said FOAMF had sold very little in its 2nd week, like 5,000 copies after their first week selling 42k

  23. Agree about how much fun they look like they're having. People spoke a lot during FOAM about it being the music the guys wanted to make, I wasn't quite sure then with things like Oh Yeah but a song called 'Look Ma, No Brains'?? That's just got the heart of Green Day written all over it.

  27. Oh ein ringrocker 🍻 If i should make a guess, we get some kind of hella mega 2.0 setlist unfortunately. Why? Because it looks like they do solo shows and festivals again, so they will have to play their greatest hits again, some of the new songs, and a very few gems Anyways, tomorrow will be a huge day for greenday fans, i hope my bank account can tank the upcoming show announcements 😅

  28. I'm not saying it won't, just that we don't know for sure. I expect it probably does, and I'm hoping it does simply because I want to be surprised and hear something (sort of) new. Side note: I'd never wager my favourite guitar pick on anything!

  31. I don't think the songs themselves are repetitive, I really like how TADIKM and LMNB switch things up throughout the song, like you said. But I do miss more interesting choruses. I was listening to American Idiot yesterday and damn, the choruses are so much better overall. Think the title track, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday... Even BOBD, which has 3 lines with the same melody, changes the last one to make it more dramatic. I think the only song in that album that has a repetitive chorus is Are We the Waiting. All the others have something different in the melody of their chorus. And now that I think about it, even Are We the Waiting switches between "And screaming" and "unknown" to punctuate the lines. Again, it's not a problem to have repetitive choruses sometimes ("Home, we're coming home again" is fucking epic). It's just that all the four songs that came out have choruses that are just the same melody (or sometimes the same lyrics) repeated 2 to 4 times. All I'm saying is, I personally hope that doesn't remain the same for the rest of the record.

  32. Sorry I’ll get back to the future right away! Blink fans are excited about the new album because of the circumstances. They still want to hear old shit at the show and not many new songs. The problem is Green Day’s peak levels were massive peaks that are unheard of today even in top 40 music. It’s never happening again. If they have a first week like Uno’s that would be solid for them.

  33. 3rd single should probably be 1981. It's not a great track or anything but I don't want to hear any more new songs til the album comes out. We've already heard 4, we don't need any more before the album release. I just want to hear 1981 or OEB with the new production. 1981 is probably more likely to be a single than OEB. OEB sounds more like an album track, not a single. Besides, 1981's already been teased in the TADIKM music video, it just seems more likely to me than not that we'll be getting 1981 as a single

  34. Anyone knows how this compares to the debut performance of other singles on these charts? Spotify streams for TADIKM Day 1 - 248k Day 2 - 487k (+239k) Day 3 - 663k (+176k) Day 4 - 1,078k (+415k) Day 5 - 1,313k (+235k) Day 6 - 1,495k (+182k) Day 7 - 1,718k (+223k)

  36. Maybe a lyric video? Though it would likely be more of an accessory to the song itself. Modern day album cycles get like 3-5 song releases before an album and videos are announced ahead of time so probably the same here

  37. i really hope they don't play any more new songs man

  38. They could literally release 4 and still have 11 left for the release that's what's cool about having 15 tracks on the new album

  39. Ive said it before and Ill say it again. Anthony Fantano is a massive poser. He knows fucking nothing about music. He’s given shit albums good scores and good albums bad scores. He plays on trends for his own popularity. Sorry Anthony I wanted to like you but I can’t because of the above.

  40. I hope they don't headline BST. Yes of course it was fun before and they played an amazing show, but BST is sooo big. I know stadiums are big, but not quite on Hyde Park spread out scale (if that makes sense!) I did like the Olympic Stadium last time, so I'd enjoy that venue again. I hope they play a proper tour though, instead of festivals (although I'll take anything!lol)

  47. Minor correction, but it really isn't falsetto other than for about 10-15% of that section. He actually sings it in his mixed voice on the album track. Live, he has been leaning more towards falsetto because it is much more difficult to control your mixed voice in that setting. As far as Billie's shift in the appearance of his pitch (sounding like it has more depth back in 04), this really is due to him working on finding proper vocal placement to be able to not only hit the notes, but also stay on pitch. If he has been working with a vocal coach (or even if he just remembers a lot of what he learned doing AI on Bway), I can assure you that he is adjusting his vocal placement so that he doesn't blow out his voice. As somebody that does a good amount of musical theatre and has fronted bands, it isn't easy. The way I have had to shift my singing from only 5 years ago is pretty remarkable. If something is painful or you are having to strain, you are doing it wrong or it is simply out of your current range. It really is that easy. Fixing it, on the other hand, not so easy and takes work. I am amazed at how good Billie still sounds live (and I saw them at the Thursday Freemont CC show as well as WWWY). The work he has put in/is putting in is definitely working. Yes, he sounds different than he did 20 years ago. He's 20 years older. That shit happens. I can tell you that 75% of the acts at WWWY wish they could still sing their old music the way Billie can rock out GD's catalogue.
