Thinking about how this album could be not so much American Idiot part two, which was a coming of age story, kind of “life during wartime” thing, but 21st Century Breakdown part two checking in on the further deterioration of society. American Dream and “The American dream is killing me” evoke these lyrics: “Oh dream, America dream, I can’t even sleep from the light’s early dawn Oh scream, America scream, believe what you see from heroes and cons” 21CB contains some of his most brilliant and insightful lyrics. Can we just talk about the clever way he turns the national anthem on its head when he says “from the light’s early dawn”? In the Star Spangled Banner you wake up and see the flag in the daylight and it inspires hope (“Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light”) Flipping “dawn’s early light” to “light’s early dawn” because the narrator is up all night with worry and feeling hopeless is such a subtle but powerful statement. He does bring the hope back at the end with See The Light, calling back to the theme. 21CB is packed with goodies like this. I’m excited for American Dream and the ways in which he might play around with these ideas in a way that feels current.

Finally catching up and I'm surprised that the website actually delivered! The cute video teaser has got me excited for new Green Day again! Wish we didn't have to wait so long for what I presume to be a single. If that's the case I can see the album dropping in February which lines up with what Rob Cavallo said about a new album in 2024. Also, the teaser sounds great! Can't wait for the official start of the new era!

I don’t see The American Dream Is Killing Me being the title, it’s too long and unwieldy. In the 22 February teaser I think, Mike spray painted a sort of smilie face and we see the bottom of a blue circle above Billie’s head in yesterday’s one. I can’t see that smilie being cover artwork on it’s own, could be irrelevant but is it a deliberate repeat? Then again the clip moves so fast I haven’t seen the photo of Mike and Billie yet, too busy watching Billie I guess.

Pretty sure that was just a misinterpretation and part of the “wake me up” conceit. You hit Snooze for a wake up call, enter your info and it said “Sweet (American) Dreams”. A “Sweet dreams” message because you’re going back to sleep with a reference to American Dream (the song)

Gotta give it up, it's the ultimate Green Day trolling for them to give us nothing for 2 years and then get us excited for them to "wake up" on Oct. 1 only to hit the SNOOZE button and tell us to wait another few weeks. 🤣😭

The more I think about the title, the more it just seems like a continuation of 21st Century Breakdown. The American Dream is like a major theme going on throughout that album Not just the references to the American dream in the title track but the idea that the "Heroes & Cons" or "the enemy" just lie to us that we can reach the top if we just work hard. If this song/album entitled Sweet (American) Dreams or The American Dream is Killing Me or whatever it's going to be called is going to be another one telling us "Hey these assholes in power are lying to you", it's hard for me not to get excited about that even if it's not a wholly original concept for them considering what most of the politics of their recent albums have been i.e. "Generic revolution anthem / We live in troubled times" content with no real underlying point or commentary being made. I don't even dislike those songs, I'm just hoping for something more here I already mentioned this lyric earlier "The brutality of reality is the freedom that keeps me from dreaming" but this alongside the lines from the intro/outro of Before the Lobotomy (see below) really just all I can think of when I hear "The American Dream is killing me" and a Green Day album in 2023 having this kind of dark content is something I'm totally cool with Dreamin', I was only dreamin' Of another place and time, where my family's from Singin', I can hear them singin' When the rain had washed away all these scattered dreams Dyin', everyone's reminded Hearts are washed in misery, drenched in gasoline Laughter, there is no more laughter Songs of yesterday now live in the underground...

The album has leaked it's about how Brit changed their mind and it's all anti-vax, anti-abortion and pro trump.

I have no idea. I was chatting with someone yesterday and they said it sounded like it could be OEB reworked. Would be interesting if it was, I just hope the song still packs as much punch as the leaked version did.

Yeah I agree with jengd, that title would be too long and clunky so I hope it's not that. Shorter or one-word album titles tend to be the best imo.

I’ve been begging for them to go on Hot Ones for years now. It’s my one promo dream Lucky buggers. Was napping and missed this story but I’m too far anyway. A nighttime video shoot could be anything from an outdoor performance with an audience to some nighttime crowd scene calling for lots of extras. Sounds so fun. May or may not hear the song there if it’s a track played over the finished product or maybe if the band are lip syncing during your scene. A video shoot is very different from a live performance. The extras will probably have to sign NDAs but maybe someone from here will get in it and tell us about it later.

I have the strangest feeling the new album is gonna suck. I really can’t shake it. Maybe it’s because of the years of shitty teasers mixed with 1981 being an incredibly lower mid song. I hope I’m wrong but I feel like I’m not.

I know it’s impossible to keep up with this thread but yeah I pointed that out way back. It’s literally the same riff slowed down. At least he wrote it and is just borrowing from himself. Maybe he felt it was too good to give away (though I love the song Broken World)

Personally I feel like Sweet American Dreams is a really cool title and gives me AI vibes but knowing Green Day and the fact that they have no idea what they’re doing anymore I’m sure they’ll find a way to mess it up lol

Given the undead on the calendar, how about Undead American or America Undead? Either for the single or album title, would fit the American dream is killing me vibe/narrative. And the saviors/walking dead thing that was going around a while back.
