AUDIO INK RADIO PRESENTS ITS RUNDOWN OF THE 12 BEST PUNK GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME 10. Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day We know that the punk diehards dislike, to say it nicely, seeing Green Day on any best-of punk lists. But, Green Day started out as a pure, punk DIY act, and they just happened to crossover into the mainstream and put the genre on the worldwide map. That said, Green Day vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong should be appreciated for what he’s done for the punk genre. His super-catchy pop-punk chords and melodies struck a chord, so to speak, with disgruntled teen rockers everywhere, and that make punk cool with the mainstream. https://audioinkradio.com/2023/09/best-punk-guitarists-of-all-time/3 points

This was the last teaser from last year and they were still using the #1972 hashtag. They must have ditched it some time after this was posted. I'm surprised they didn't post more after that and tease us with the new name1 point

Pretty sure 1972 was the name when they started the project. But midway through they decided to ditch that name and come up with something else.1 point

Nice mention there. Completely forget all the time that this was his start! Most people don’t know that. I’m not really an Aquabats fan but I do like them. I saw Travis play with The Transplants and have nothing bad to say about that show. He played well and they put on a good show as a band. What were you listening to at that time? I get the sentiment overall, the 90s saw so many different acts come through and of course the 2000s were fairly diverse with different genres bubbling under and entering the mainstream.1 point

I liked Travis the most when he was an Aquabat. Something was always a little eccentric and interesting. He’s lost a lot of feeling since playing/carrying those two dolts. Sure, the technicality is there for all to see, but I want fuckin heart and soul! Punch me in my guts!1 point

I guess I’m just going by numbers and also I was never a Blink fan so never paid attention to them hell i completely ignored rock from like 2002 to 2015 or so outside of a band or two1 point

Probably there are other versions lying somewhere, but when the guys recorded Dookie in 93 all the songs were finished, at least lyric wise. The only slightly reworked songs were Chump and Longview because the label didn't like how the transition between them.1 point

How did you guys manage to turn this thread into a debate between a 00's frivolous pop punk band vs. Green Day ? 😅 Oh, and I love the comparison of Travis Barker to John Bonham, in any context. It really holds the credibility of being a ''pro'' musician..1 point

I don’t have it mixed up, it’s just that for a rock band it’s not common to be nominated for your first major label release. It was a poor choice of words from typing on my phone, not a lack of knowledge. But yeah I can see why someone might think based off the terminology used why I got it mixed up. I meant first major label release not eligibility. My bad! Either way GD has accomplished it all. I wish they would do it again of course but they have had a great journey so far. Tim, I’m curious what your thoughts are on Blink being that you were in the industry at the time. Do you think they were deserving of the accolades GD achieved? Or is the disparity between the two the natural margin between legends and a successful pop punk band? As a musician I’m fairly confident that Blink are not great musicians. They’re sloppy live as a unit which is a major indicator. I think individually Travis is really good but not as good as people think he is. But yeah he’s definitely a pro drummer I have no doubts there. I don’t think highly about their songwriting over the course of their whole career but I think songwriting was probably more of their forte and more of the bread and butter of their success. So I agree with that point even if I do laugh at the narrative that they write nursery rhymes. But there are far less successful bands that had more technical musicians. Rancid is the first to come to mind. I seem to draw a lot of parallels between Blink and NOFX as of late. NOFX have been sloppy live at times but theyre also technically better than Blink. Green Day are pretty solid as a band but there are points of simplicity as well which has been both a compliment and criticism of the band. However, they coordinated some 9 min songs and those happen to be 2 of the best songs in their discography. There’s some really great drumming on those parts and Tre is a major part of the glue that keeps the band together. I think both GD and Blink evolved their sounds and matured but Green Day was the better band so they capitalized on having a higher potential. GD are both better musically as a band and as songwriters. Blink doesn’t have a JOS, a Homecoming, 21cb etc and to be honest they never will achieve that. Even with Travis being a really solid drummer I don’t see him running as a captain for a 9 minute song and when you achieve that feat most of the success of that song falls into the hands of the drummer. But Travis will play some cool backbeats that Tre will never get caught playing. Something like Kill The DJ would have had more impact with a drummer like Travis but on a song like JOS or Homecoming it just has no impact. Tre plays like a punk Keith Moon where Travis is like a punk Bonham. I think thats probably the closest similarity is that both bands have outstanding drummers.1 point

Seeing as Alan made fun of his bellie in a picture once, I don't think it's just your family. 😄1 point

Quite possibly, I just thought with 5 older siblings they might get some pleasure out if this and giving you grief about it, maybe says more about my family 😂😂1 point

There’s something really special about the Pinole Valley High School performance. To think they’re playing those songs and kids are just casually watching or walking by. Just another rock band setting up playing. Fast forward years later and these songs get played at massive festivals and venues now to thousands of people a night. There’s also a special 93 performance (blanking on where the show was sorry!) where they played a lot of dookie songs. I think those 93 shows are special because you get that intimate show of a band peaking and the setlists contain a mix of the first 3 albums.1 point

I think you are right about Sara but think Tre has always had a love for style and clothes, he’s had some really amazing suits and stuff over the years. Could be a shared interest.1 point
