I'm sorry, but where does anyone get off calling them lazy and dispassionate? That's just an absolutely insane thing to accuse this band of, just because they had fun making FOAM doesn't mean they didn't believe in it as much as their other records. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but that claim is just completely baseless.10 points

It’s interesting that AI has a new and different meaning these days. To Green Day fans, it could mean American Idiot. Maybe an updated rock opera could be called AI? Kind of neat play on words that references the album but brings it up to date. American Idiot was all about losing your identity. AI can be saying something similar in today’s world with plagiarism, deep fakes and loss of jobs. Not saying they’re doing this but it would be fun to see Billie try some clever storytelling with the American Idiot/AI thing. Oh no, I’m starting to sound like @That Dude ! 😂6 points

Hidden tracks were cool when people were buying CDs. Now with Spotify you can't have hidden tracks anymore.5 points

They already re-used their biggest release with a unicorn on it and we all know how good it was.5 points

I don't think Walker was the right choice for Green Day but I don't think it's fair for people to blame the problems with the album on him when the sound of the album was almost surely down to Billie, which is what it's been like since at least American Idiot. I think the issue with Walker was probably not doing what Cavallo or Vig could do which was challenge the band to do better than they have before. Rob, as he's worked with them for most of their career, was clearly able to do that. After C&V, he asked the band if that was the best they could do and they said no and made American Idiot. Butch Vig is the reason Billie ended up writing Restless Heart Syndrome as he had the melody of that song for years and Vig made him write lyrics for the song. He's also the reason why H&H is on the album too. Both these songs are amongst my favourite GD songs and I'm so glad they were made and put on the album I think every band once they've been around enough kind of have the same problem. Where they have many different types of fans that prefer different types of music. Like look at Weezer for example. There are groups that like the Blue album the most, then those who prefer Pinkerton, those who prefer their 00's stuff, their 2010s stuff, their poppier stuff, their more rock sounding stuff etc. You just can't please them all. There are plenty of other bands I could mention to. Linkin Park after Meteora would drastically change their sound for each new album and fans had their own preferences. There are a ton of other examples I could give And even if GD did manage to make an extremely commercially successful album that is considered a "masterpiece", there will still be parts of the fanbase that wouldn't like it, or at least not as much as their older stuff. All of their albums have had their detractors. Dookie was considered a sellout, Insomniac was considered a disappointment after Dookie by many, Nimrod released Good Riddance and experimental stuff which a lot of older fans would've also considered a sellout. Warning was hated by many. AI was a huge shift and while very successful was disliked by a lot of older fans. Same with 21CB. The trilogy, of course, was hated by many. RevRad and FOAMF, no different, also got a lot of hate and criticism I don't think the band should care about trying to please everyone because they can't. It's just not possible5 points

Theres some dude on YouTube that makes crazy Green Day conspiracy videos. He’s already talked about 1981. Nope they’re cemented already on back catalog alone. A huge part of GD’s success during AI was the discovery of their back catalog by a new generation. Very few bands put together a discography of this quality so even if band isn’t adding to it a lot of other bands fall short still despite that. Notorious for a great live show as well. I’m no fan of butch walker but in all fairness he didn’t write the songs on the album. I love Rob Cavallo a lot for all of his work not just Green Day work, but even with the trilogy how did the guitars end up sounding like that? Shit happens, sometimes we go to work and we have good periods of output and sometimes we suck. We’re humans. And ps Butch knows a lot about modern digital recording methods, he is still very much a pro. Green Day always sounded better on tape though. Rob is the best producer for Green Day no doubt. He knows how to channel their chaos. Watch all these videos over the years of them recording with him. He’s the only one who’s ever had them sit there with an attention span for more than 2 mins. They respect Rob. Butch Vig was also a great producer for the band. Those are the two who stick out for me across Green Day’s career. They both got maximum Green Day.5 points

I wasn’t particularly fussed about the reframing/defacing of the American Idiot cover. That’s a valid artistic move (hell, even Bowie did it). It was the ketchup font I found personally distasteful.3 points

I found a band pic I have never seen posted anywhere else, so I thought I post it. It's from a magazine called "The Face". The issue/year is not known but in the article it states that Dookie "has sold over 2 million copies" (so 1994 still?). It's been a realllly long time since green day used tape. I think I heard somewhere that warning was done with Pro Tools but I could be mistaken, but I definitely remember reading that the reason they chose Doug McKean was because he was so good at protools. I also read that Chris Dugan said they tried doing drums on tape for 21st century breakdown but the transients weren't coming through the way they wanted so they just went digital2 points

Reading the last few pages I’m even more convinced that the biggest blessing and curse of this band is their spanning through different eras of rock and their different music styles, and through different generations of fans and their different music tastes. Unless they somehow pull out a extremely commercially successful masterpiece that brings in a fresh fanbase as AI did, I think it will be almost impossible to have a new record that will be “universally recognized” as a success, pleasing part of the current fanbase without being hated by the rest of it. Even more considering the current state of society and pop culture where everything needs to be either loved or hated. The question to me is whether the band actually cares about this stuff at this point of their career, and whether they should care at all.2 points

I don't think so. Green Day have been more consistent than most rock bands even with some of their less successful albums. 13 albums and only two eras that weren't quite what most fans wanted? That's impressive. Green Day have a strong enough following that 14 could be an absolute horror show and their career wouldn't really suffer much. They'd keep on going out and playing their One-Twenty-One Hits, taking the money and crawling away and the cycle continues. Haha. I do hope that this album is something really special though. And the band definitely want to please fans. I keep going back to what Jason White said in the recent podcast. The interviewer was asking if Green Day could play some songs Jason wrote, like 2nd Street and some other Pinhead Gunpowder songs. Jason's response was something like "we're here to make friends, not enemies." I really think Green Day, for better or worse, are going to go on popular consensus in Album 14 and really make something that appeals to the majority of Green Day fans. It's going to have flavors of Dookie and Idiot, with a little bit of Nimrod and Breakdown and then completely on accident, a tiny bit of 'modern Green Day' just so there's something to complain about. I hope that some new songs can gain enough traction to be played live. That's my biggest concern. And while I love the weird, wacky stuff in their catalogue, I also enjoy the big hits and I think Green Day 14 is going to be well received. Will it sell? No One Knows.2 points

Foam is great, it’s the second worst album of Green Day but it’s great. Anyway, I relistened/rewatched 1981 and I was thinking of what if they performed it in order to record the footage for a live music video as part of the promotion? Not saying it’s gonna be the lead single but maybe a promotional single they release later?2 points

Bolt logo sucks. Everyone should probably buy an XXXXXXXL because band Tee's never fit right. They limited quantity to 10 because Green Day are communists. I hate everything about these shirts. Terrible color, material, design, stupid band. All their albums suck, especially that new one. Don't support these cringe buttjerks. I'll do one really negative review and then follow it up with a really positive one. Then, an average review just to corner the market on reviewing this one t-shirt. Haha1 point

On apple music you can choose between the standard version with 13 tracks or deluxe with 9 tracks (Holiday/Bobd, are we/st.jimmy etc) plus 3 bonus Tracks1 point

That irritates me so much. Is American Idiot like that on other streaming services? I hope Album 14 doesn't have any tracks that get bundled together. I do hope there is a longer song or two, but not necessarily like Jesus of Suburbia. Length of 11 minutes and 8 seconds. Called Pazzy Jazzy and The Infinite Slap with some really, really super fast, poppy parts.1 point

Spotify can’t even split AI into 13 songs so I wouldn’t have too much hope 😉1 point

-How many songs will be on the album? -Will there be any hidden tracks? -What will the artwork look like? -Who will be the music videos director(s)? -Will there be choirs or orchestral leanings on the album? -Is it a concept album? So many questions on my mind...1 point

Technically the producer credit was “Rob Cavallo and Green Day”. Though I watched Cuatro and came away with the impression that it he was pretty hands-off.1 point

If this new album isn’t good, Green Day risk alienating their fan base after the torture they’ve put us through for the last 2 years.1 point

How do we define when a song transitions from leak to just an unreleased song? Is there even a difference? I wonder if live performances of stuff like Olivia, 1981, etc bother the band at all. I wonder if leaks of any kind bother them.1 point

Rob Cavallo is the fixer, I'm guessing. Similarly, Butch Vig likely had a large influence on 21CB. RevRad was pretty good for self-produced but imagine if it had a Cavallo/Vig touch.1 point

That was my problem with FOAM. This whole “we’re not taking it seriously” thing is fine in small doses but it gets to a point where it’s like “well if the band doesn’t care, why should I?”. I don’t want to see Green Day become U2 but there’s nothing wrong with taking pride in your work. That and we waited 4 years for 26 minutes of new music. And the inconsistent production style. And the songs that weren’t really about anything. And that stupid fucking album art.1 point

Billie Joe ranks 9th on the Hard Time’s list of “50 Famous Lead Singers Ranked by How Good of a Roommate I Think They’d Be” Billie Joe seems very gregarious and an overall solid roommate. The only downside is that he’d always be threatening to move to Canada if a politician he didn’t like got elected. Contractually speaking, that’s really going to mess up our lease situation. https://thehardtimes.net/rankings/50-famous-lead-singers-ranked-by-how-good-of-a-roommate-i-think-theyd-be/1 point

Anyone know if Reprise fixed Slappy's cover color? It's been hot pink since the Lookout material moved to Reprise. It looks darker in the pic but I'm curious to see the actual copy. 1 2 3 4 Go Records didn't answer when I inquired. It should be dark red.1 point
