People on gdc: this band is boring they don't love us why they wait too long for drop new music. Also gdc when an actual new song comes out: I can't get the hype of the new song, never thought to say that foam was better, I don't like short songs, it's typical green day... 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈15 points

I'm going to share my thoughts on this song when we get a higher quality studio version of the song and I'm probably not going to listen to it again until we get a higher quality version of the track. It doesn't seem like an amazing song, idk if it's intended to be a single for the album or what, but with good production and stuff, it could maybe be a good track. It's not what I expected after FOAMF and the teasers we got. I still warn people not to necessarily expect a single release immediately. And not to judge the album based on this low quality recording of one live performance of one song13 points

Yes, it feels like a complete song with all the parts which is already an improvement. And power pop Green Day is my favorite Green Day. No one minds that the chorus of Static Age is repetitive, it’s a tight little power pop song like this one12 points

“She’s gonna bang her head on 1981” if I’m hearing it right. Yup, it’s a banger12 points

The new song sounds great so far, I’m sure even the actual studio version is gonna sound even better. Why don’t some of you actually give it a chance first and before jumping the gun?11 points

I think just the fact they played a new song out of nowhere is the excitement. I mean what the fuck and why?11 points

Exactly. GDC became so toxic over the last years. Yes everyone‘s got a different taste but sometime the band can do whatever they want there will always be some people dislike new music.10 points

Two random festival shows after 5 months off are the last place I expected them to pull out The Grouch after 14 years, Stuart after 7 years, Stuck With Me, and a new song. I’m happy that they appear to feel more comfortable ripping through some deep cuts in front of a (mostly) casual audience, but I wonder what changed in their mindset? It intrigues me after so many years of copy-and-paste setlists.10 points

I think the song has some potential. My problem is that it was WILDLY out of tune and Billie's voice didn't sound great. My husband and I were kind of looking at each other with cringe face while we were listening. Give me the studio version please! Not writing it off by any means, but also hoping that the fucking amazing group sound we have come to expect from this band comes back.9 points
-
Maybe they just wanted to play one of the new songs and this was a good one to try because it was relatively easy to play, short and catchy and won’t tax a festival audience too much.9 points

Everything went wrong during this song. The voice, the sound. He stops playing guitar, touches his ear. Everything was strange. BUT WE WERE BANGING OUR HEADS LIKE IT WAS 1981 🤟🤟9 points

Feels like it could be this record's Know Your Enemy - not in sound, but in that it's a straight forward catchy song they can play live and easily get people singing along. Sonically it's more Murder City but you catch my drift. It's a repetitive chorus sure but I've had it in my head for the past two hours, and overall structure with the prechorus and bridge feels so much more fleshed out than FOAM stuff even though it's just a two minute song. Plus Mike and Tre as a rhythm section are out here fucking killing it, ever since that teaser I've been dying to hear those tasty Dirnt major scales in the full song9 points

Do you even like green day? Like what are you even doing here? Hahaha you say this for every show, you were going to be right sooner or later 😂9 points

Last nigh in Quebec, Green Day played a new song called 1981: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CuyoLTUtnp1/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== It is the same song from this teaser: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cbmp9LilxZd/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== No further information on release date of a single or album, they just introduced the song, played it, and moved on. But this is definitely step 1 from more to come!8 points

so proud and happy for u same with Booze. Really hope you enjoyed yourself tonight, man @Little Boy Named Booze8 points

I don't care that you don't like the song, it's fun and catchy but it's not their best work, whatever, it's power pop/catchy punk rock, there's only so much you can do with the genre, I was just annoyed by your comment that it's "typical green day" and nothing new. What sort of new thing were you expecting? I love green day so "typical green day" to me is a good thing. There's bound to be different sounding stuff on the album, but they almost always have the first single from an album be more of a classic green day sound, so this is the kind of song I expected7 points

I am thinking on an kinda autobiographical rock opera thing... with songs telling a life story of some sortt, since the caracter birth to now7 points
-
I have mixed feelings on 1981. Idk it’s cool that we finally have something new but also it’s not exactly a banger.7 points
-
I hope last night's performance was a shortened version because I am not a fan of 1:52 songs that have no variance.7 points
-
HOLY SHIT I TOTALLY CALLED THAT ONE!!! I JUST NEVER THOUGHT THEY'D PLAY SOMETHING TONIGHT!!!!!7 points

It sounds fine 🤷♀️I'll save my final thoughts for when a recorded version comes out. But glad we finally got something new!6 points

this! GDs world sometimes ticks differently, but in todays world with everyone having short attention spans you dont do promo and single(s) for many months, so i really dont know how the promo will turn out the new song is now released for the public, the studio version should be released very soon (july/august), it makes no sense to have crappy recordings of the new song without the studio verion but if we get the first song in july/august, and the album is rumoured to be released in 2024 (january maybe then??), the promo would last from summer through fall until winter, minimum 6 months of promotion unless the album wont come out in 2024 but in 2023 👀 it would make more sense now since the new era kinda officially started yesterday6 points

MTV was launched in 1981, I think it’s quite clear the song is about a girl seeing a music video for the first time and how it changed her life.6 points
-
Green Day have been making 2 minute songs on basically every album they've ever made. Just cause this song might be 2 minutes, doesn't mean the rest of the songs will be. And even if they are, if they're banger songs it doesn't really matter imo6 points

Hey guys! 👋 just checking in after my workshop with CLA! He said the album is done (obviously as we all know) and he seemed excited about it! His class was worth it for the GD stories alone 🤗 (did you know the acoustic in 21 guns is from him?) he also whipped out the raw tracks of holiday/blvd and played around with the mixes 🤯 but yeah, have a good feeling about this one.6 points

Maybe Billie Joe remebered the italian Insta account were everyone was asking for a tour with deep cuts 😂5 points

Tbf we should stop thinking we will ever get something like AI/21st because musically they were on their peak. But you can‘t compare FOAM with this performance (1st performance, technical problems, poor video quality) or the whole upcoming album. I‘m sure its gonna be a great record and it has better songs than 19815 points

Oh I didn't said the most important thing and @Liam can confirm cause he was here too. But Billie said before playing Time of Your Life "what an amazing crowd you are Québec, VIVE LE QUEBEC, and don't worry we are coming back" So maybe already for the next tour? I hope it's gonna be an arena tour. Because the true fans are here! In a festival it's just fucking everybody.5 points

I was thinking that it reminded me of the 1995 meth shows where 2 minute songs turned into 90 second songs live.5 points

I think if you want to play a brand new song in front of such a huge festival crowd, you’ll pick something that is easy to be received by that crowd. Would not be surprised if this end up being (one of) the most straight forward tracks on the record. And still, so far we just listened to a bunch of low quality recordings form a first time ever live performance (apparently with some technical issues as well).5 points

'..LIKE 1981..' is what I'm hearing.. and yes, it slaps. EDIT: this is all I've been able to pick up so far: she's gonna bang her like 1981 [x4] she's throwing punches to the beat to the sound of cable tv and she'll never see the world the same she is the _____ in my head and i am _____5 points

1981 looks like a mid album track, like She's a Rebel or Bouncing of the Wall...4 points

Not just lead singles, singles in general. Redundant over Prosthetic Head (which WAS going to be a single) or maybe Scattered... Last of the American Girls over songs like The Static Age, Peacemaker or Before the Lobotomy... Forever Now not getting a single/video release like was considered... Graffitia being entirely overlooked and giving us all garbage singles... I expect this is simply a lack of research and posting songs in the order we are hearing them.4 points

I mean it didn't bothered me 🤷♂️ I love new song now i wonder what will happen between now and the next show in 2 months. What's fun is at least I'm not gonna wait another 6 years to see them again.4 points
-
Yes exactly what I thought. And its weird they didnt play it two days before. Even when he screamed „this next song is called 1981“. On the other hand they can totally ignore it because they dont do any interviews right now. I didnt even see an article posting about it. Maybe they‘re taking a few scenes of the performance for a music video. I‘m really excited what the next few days will bring4 points

To me, I think they were just testing out the song and he forgot some lyrics so maybe he looked down at a sheet4 points
-
Looking forward to hearing the studio version of this, I just hope it’s not a 2 min song like the FOAM stuff. The clips I’ve seen online have only been 2 mins.4 points
