More info from Jason!!! "What’s different this time is the people around the band think it’s something special. It was described to me as “🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥” for example. With FOAM even Butch Walker seemed to know it would be polarizing and made it clear that it wasn’t the typical GD sound but it was what the band wanted." https://forum.greenday.fm/t/album-14-news-rumours-speculation/28/66412 points

They haven't put this much time into an album since 21CB, which is sparking some interest in me, because it seemed Billie made it clear he wasn't interested in putting as much work into new music and I've changed my expectations accordingly, but perhaps this album is going to be subvert them10 points

When has the band talked negatively of new work? 99 Revolutions was the best Green Day song according to Billie. It’s nice to hear they find this upcoming release special, but it’s no guarantee it is.8 points

Fair enough lol. It was a substantial enough update that it made its way outside of GDC. Genuine question. Are you guys okay in here? I mean I probably know the answer to that but like this thread is literally just a giant group chat. Only like 15% of the conversation here is actually real discussion/news about the album. Idk how you all do this shit every day when there's literally zero updates. Opening this thread is like watching Groundhog Day. Did Bill Murray teach you nothing??? You all keep saying you're tired of the redundancy, but you keep doing it! Do you guys have jobs? That was a joke, but I am also curious. I feel like this can't be healthy. You're all probably better off giving this thread a rest when there really is no discussion to be had. If you keep thinking that something will happen every day, then it's really gonna mess with your heads. I know this isn't everyone, but the point still stands. It has to be exhausting to play this guessing game over and over again. Honestly I bet if you give yourselves a break we'll actually hear some real news. Don't get me wrong, I know people come here to talk to other fans and pass the time (and that one dude who just shitposts but honestly respect because he's providing the only entertainment in this ongoing dumpster fire), but I feel like you're only making it worse for yourselves. This isn't meant to be taken too seriously, but I feel like it was an important observation to be had. By all means keep fucking around, I'm not here to dictate anything. I know that this thread is multi purpose, but like seriously please take care of yourselves. The wait will be less painless if you don't think about it as much. Obsessing over it won't make the album come any quicker. There's a reason why people say a watched pot never boils...8 points

For me the wait between AI and 21CB just seemed to go on forever and ever! We've had The Network and No Fun Mondays as well as FOAM and I'm just here waiting. I love GD but it will happen when it happens7 points

i don't know, but something in this project tells me that this is something special, or at least the entire staff think that way. the team behind (Rob, CLA), they're taking their time with this. like polishing a diamond. the trilogy suffer so much with not taking the right time to mature ideas. i think something changed in july or august 22, wich cause them to stop teasing with the thought that this projetct will not be released so soon than they thought in the begining.4 points

In between AI and 21CB we had the U2 Collab, the John Lennon cover and of course Pinhead Gunpowder.4 points

I think it's safe to assume something changed pretty drastically during their process. That's totally OK. However, for the band to go completely dark after pretty consistently teasing is, in my opinion, not OK. They can account for delays by keeping up the teasing with a clear message that things are still on-going. Sure, they don't owe us crap and don't have to do anything, which has always been their stance. This is all on-par with their marketing ever since I've followed them so I'm not sure why I'm expecting anything different.4 points

As long as we don’t get another “pure, uncut rock” album complete with billboards with lines of coke 🙄 I’m all for a whole album of songs like Lady Cobra or Makeout Party but really guys, you think FOAM is “Rock & Roll”? Meet Me on the Roof sounds like FBHT covering Billy Joel for a Disney movie soundtrack.3 points

I remember those early reviews of RevRad saying it sounded like old school Green Day, which well… was a bit misleading to say the least. That said, Bang Band was an amazing song / first single, so I can understand the hype and going by three very important metrics besides hearing the actual music, those being: - the extensive time the band has spent working on this album - the fantastic staffing (Cavallo/CLA) - the band’s own tremendous enthusiasm around it …I think we’re in for something big. Certainly bigger than FOAM, possibly the biggest thing Green Day have done since AI/21CB (fingers crossed).3 points
-
Yeah it’s all just poor marketing. I know we will all buy the record no matter what, but GD really doesn’t value a relationship with their fans like most bands do now. They still operate like social media isn’t a thing. Social media sucks in a lot of ways, but there’s plenty of data showing it increases fan engagement. Maybe Green Day just doesn’t care.3 points

☝️ This. By the time the quote from Billie appeared saying the release would probably be out in 2023, it was only halfway through 2022 they had already been teasing it for six months. So the belief prior to that was that a release was imminent in 2022. So it was certainly reasonable for us to assume a statement regarding a 2023 release meant early that year, not the end of it (or even 2024). Seriously why tease a recording with a fully edited video and what appears to be a title (“RAK Studios - London- 1972”) in 2021 for 2024? I’m sorry but that’s on them.3 points

We don't really know how much effort is being put into this album. Let's not over hype it. I'm not tryna be a Debbie downer but thia album could easily be in development hell2 points

I remember Billie saying something similar to "This is (some of) the best work we've ever done" referring to 21CB, the trilogy and RevRad. Whatever you think of those albums, it's clear that he says this kind of stuff basically all the time. Maybe he did believe that each of those albums were amongst the best of their material at that time but it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't recall him ever saying anything like that regarding FOAMF but I feel like if he was asked, he would probably have said something similar, whether he believes that FOAMF is a great album or not. He's not gonna say "Eh. You know. It's OKAY. Not the best". That's not going to excite people much for a new album cycle. I wouldn't think too much about other people involved with the album necessarily saying the same thing either.2 points

I was thinking that I was 29 when they first teased this album and I'll be 32 by the time they release it. Yes, green day 😂2 points

Adding onto this, American Idiot isn't the only milestone here. Dookie is turning 30 in February. 2024 is a huge year for them, and it honestly makes sense that they would want to utilize it. Plus I have a very strong feeling that things have changed since they dropped those teasers. They've been working on this album for far too long for there not to have been significant changes going on behind the scene. American Idiot took them 9 months in the studio. Obviously they went on tour and have been doing other things during the most recent sessions, but there has to be much more going on here than what we originally thought. To be frank, the wait has made me more excited for the album. I didn't care all that much when the teasers first dropped. They didn't have my attention until Rob Cavallo joined the party. It is evident that they're putting a lot of care into this album. If it's taking them this long, it has to be really fucking good. If they're gonna do it, they're gonna do it right this time. Go big or go home. That's at least how I see it. *edit: also I know this is late I only check this thread every couple months because it's just another 100 pages of nothing but something actually happened for once.2 points

In response to the criticism levied at Green Day's recent marketing choices, I think there's real reason to be optimistic about it when their next album comes - whenever that may be. Did you guys see all the promotion for Fall Out Boy's newest album? I don't follow FOB on any social media platforms, yet I saw promotion for their album all over the place - hiding little packages for fans at landmarks in major cities, billboards in major cities, three short-notice intimate club shows, and pre-release listening parties at affiliated record stores with prizes, exclusive colored records, and more. Again, these are just things that I happened to see while browsing social media; I'm sure fans of FOB who actually follow the band can speak more on the promotion of the record. As Green Day and FOB are both under the same management, Crush, I would bet that the marketing for the next Green Day record will follow a similar strategy.2 points

Well I spoke with my friend at lunch. He swear to me that's what Green Day management told them in early January. He can't explain it either but he doesn't really give a fuck honestly 😂 He's just happy that he got them for his festival lol. He says it's not the first time they got told something by an artist that didn't happen. Moral of the story don't trust me anymore.2 points

yesss, but at the same time i think this is the kind of message that is made by their staff, working on their social media.1 point

Just because it's taking a long time doesn't mean they're SPENT a long time on it. Could be one person holding up the other two. Is Dirnt getting his revenge for the pre-Idiot sessions, which spawned "Nobody Likes You"? Or is he in the studio drinking 10 cups of coffee, watching my YouTube channel since Spike is gone now and fuming about Bill and Frank again? 20 years and these idiots can't make it to work on time!!!! Aaaaaaaagh Maybe it's a good, personal reason or maybe the other guys are just not pressuring whoever it is. Just some speculation. I think even if there is a delay, the guys are putting the effort in.1 point

I bet every song on the new album has that Father of All falsetto and Billie's got a lot of work to do, because they're ONLY playing new songs at future shows and he doesn't want to shred his neck into dust. and he doesn't want to hurt his hands from all the handclapping. SOooooooo much hand clapping.1 point

The question is why they’re so bad at marketing. It’s not like they’re new at this. To quote Dr. Evil “throw us a friggin bone here”.1 point
-
Don’t forget the imminent “what if this is their last album and the band is retiring!?” Rumor that people seem to fall into every few months it seems like.1 point

Yay, another nine months of odd ramblings, drug-inspired fake tracklists, and talking in circles about the same stuff.1 point

I really hope the wait is worth it. With it being so long it runs the risk of being disappointing which is my experience when a band keeps delaying an album. I'd rather they didnt say anything about the new LP if it was gonna take this long.1 point

I’m normally just a lurker here but I just wanted to clear some things up: 1. I’m not Jason Tate, I’m Jason Holmes but I did run greenday.net long ago. 2. I didn’t say my source confirmed that the album isn’t done, I said it kinda sounded that way and it also came across that way in the Cavallo interview 3. I only confirmed what Cavallo already revealed about the 2024 release date, it wasn’t some “insider” breaking news. 4. I really hate being called an “insider” 5. I would never put information out as fact that I didn’t believe was rock solid. If I had any doubt, I’d make sure to note that. If this info ends up being wrong it’s because they changed plans but I’m 100% confident it’s the current plan.1 point

I remember Billie saying he records covers all the time to keep himself fresh and help ideas flow. I will take rough cuts of those covers to hold me over1 point

I just wish Green Day themselves would put out a statement to clear the air on what’s going on with the album1 point

Wouldn’t an early 2024 release hurt any award show traction? Grammys cutoff is Sept I believe and releasing so early for the 2024 Grammys would probably lose award momentum. And don’t winter albums sell pretty poorly? I guess it depends how far into 2024 we’re talking.1 point
-
At this point, I hope all this wait give us an album longer then 10 songs, which seems to be the new normal for bands1 point
-
So a project begun in 2021 won’t be out until 2024. Just a theory, but is it possible this album is so good that they know it will be successful and award worthy and they don’t want to be lost in all the rock releases coming out this year so they’re pushing it to next awards season when they’ll have the spotlight to themselves? I don’t know just trying to find a silver lining in all this, some benefit to waiting.1 point
