why does this forum come back to debating if it's okay to say the n-word every few months? No it still isn't for fucks sake shut up already6 points
-
When your famous and in the public eye, a "bad choice" is jumped on and criticized. But Billie Joe publicly conveyed his regrets for this and for the lyrics in the song mentioned before. It shows he cares what he says, not wanted to cause offense, rather than just saying fuck you. We are all human, we all make mistakes, we can't help it. Trying to put things right if we can, if it's possible, shows we care. It's all we can do. When I look back on my life and see the shit I've done and the hurt I've caused and think, how did that happen, if only....... So, what right have I to judge. Only love will put things right, hopefully.6 points

Idk why people are having such extreme reactions (including saying the n word just to get a response from people), to people saying that they don't like Bill Maher. Nobody actually really cares about the problematic stuff the band may have done in the past, especially not enough to cancel them for it. Idc that the band has used the n word in a song, in the context it was used I'm fine with it and I'm not in favour of limiting people in what they can or can't write in their lyrics (although any white guy using the n word in their music in the 2020s will always be at least a bit sus). But I don't think it's hard to just generally avoid using the n word since it obviously makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Like there's nothing wrong with just referring to it as "the n word" but if you actually spell out the word on a public forum, you're just doing that to upset people and get a reaction which is honestly just pathetic5 points

It looks like you're the first one in the thread to mention cancelling. Which I hardly think a bit of grousing on a niche fan forum qualifies as. Or are we not allowed to dislike things anymore?5 points

And the way he tries to describe it kills me every time 🤣3 points

This is genuinely one of the loveliest things I’ve read on this site. Thanks for writing it.3 points

Ngl I think that's sort of an odd response to ppl going "I don't like Bill Maher". I don't think anyone really cares either way, certainly not enough to "cancel" the band over it. In fact I don't think I've even seen any criticism of the band here3 points

Wow! It looks like they finally released A Song for An Asshole!3 points

I wished Kevin Preston happy birthday on Instagram yesterday and he just liked my comment right now!!!!!!!!!!3 points

....anyway so..... I wouldn't even be able to tell this was Green Day if no one mentioned it. It just sounds like standard show intro to me 🤷♀️2 points

The N-word may not be "Voldemort" but it carries a lot of weight and even if it's not being used as a derogatory term, it doesn't mean people are okay with hearing or seeing it. It can still make people uncomfortable.2 points

People can be nice and still have shitty views. That doesn't change much about them.2 points

Bill Maher is largely liberal (not all all issues) but will go after the right and far left. He's also involved with Project Chimps, so Billie also knows him from doing work on that.2 points
-
That’s true, so while I excuse the Morrissey thing because any Gen Xer would still be excited to work with him, it certainly should be a lesson learned for the next time. And you could argue this is that next time2 points
-
Not necessarily. It could seem like a pattern but still be a random series of decisions for different reasons. I honestly don’t think he knew about the Morrissey thing. As for Bill Maher, I don’t know what his views or leanings are or like with Morrissey if Billie is just thinking of his experience on the show years ago and knows nothing about it anymore. Or, he feels like this is a case of someone you’re not going to agree on with everything but he’s not toxic like Tucker Carlson.2 points
-
Omg I forgot about the Morrissey thing 🤦♀️ Yeah this is quite a strange choice for the band. And you'd think they'd be a bit more cautious with who they work with after the Morrissey thing and having to explain themselves using the Gary Glitter sample.2 points
-
OK, cool. If you think some old white dude who lets the N-word slip out of his mouth from time to time on live TV is a cool guy and not worthy of criticism, then that’s your choice. Weird hill to die on, though.2 points

I remember when Bill Maher was considered extremist left wing. Now he's alt right? Man do things change.2 points

It's totally fine to be critical of something that absolutely sucks2 points

If I said I loved Bill Maher, would it make you calm down?1 point

^^I absolutely think so too. Even though the clip is low bitrate, you can tell that that probably isn't your friend Chris Dugan (who I have nothing against), but rather someone who usually wears a cap and dog tags and has mixed Green Day's best record in their catalogue. 😁1 point

Okay, so he may know him more on a personal level and that's never the same as someone's public persona. He's judging differently1 point

Billie also wrote CUNT about that girl who accused his son of sexual assault. Most celebs are democrats for brand but neoliberal at home. It seeps out in their art a lot.1 point

I will say the "Gravity Bong" bit introduced 16 year-old-me to a whole new way of smoking weed back in the day1 point

Not to bring it all up again but all that stuff about Morrissey was in the British tabloid press. Americans knew nothing about it because he’s so irrelevant here. Like Billie, all I thought was that I loved The Smiths so I could see him wanting to work with him without even realizing he had to be vetted. Seems like everyone has to be vetted these days. The Gary Glitter thing was different since the dude was literally in prison it made news everywhere and was more widely known.1 point

Maybe you need to go read the lyrics to American Eulogy1 point

At least, from an audio perspective, this silly snippet somewhat fills the craving for new tunes as well as an approximation of what the band may sound like, production-wise, coming up ahead. 🤩 then again, it may be another attempt to throw us off track from 1972 speculations! 🫣1 point

Leave it to people here to take something new that is fun and innocent and “cancel” it because of who it is for. Good god, lighten the f*** up.1 point
-
As I remember, it was just the lyrics to the song with illustrations along with it. That's it. The issue was whoever did publicity on the book worded it poorly, saying it was a guide to being a girl rebel (paraphrasing there). The band just got criticized, rather than the publicist.1 point
-
A return to the 2007 Denim Era where the band were scarfing it up with black and white polka dots and doing righteous covers. BOO CHA HEY1 point
-
Yeah, I guess I worded it a bit wrong. It's aged well but in an incredibly unfortunate way. I guess since I work in the school system now I'm a bit sensitive to it, since (and I know this is veering into too personal) now that's one of major fears now.1 point

1972 is going to exclusively theme songs from that year's tv shows. I'm particularly excited about their take on All In the Family and Sanford and Son. Haha.1 point

I can see there are times when it’s a little too close to home but it’s a massively relevant song with all the shootings in the US. Painful but as @FOAMfinger says, totally on point.1 point

The song has actually aged incredibly well, the lyrics and messaging are on point.1 point

At this point it’s obvious that these choices aren’t accidental.0 points
