I disagree. It‘s exactly what they want. They wanted to sound it like that otherwise they wouldn‘t have record it. For ME RevRad was perfect and I love every second of it.10 points

While it's fun to see Green Day in the top 40 and be in the mainstream's good graces, I'll just be happy that there's a new album. Always look forward to new GD music!7 points

My copy of Money Money 2020 put my Green Day vinyl collection looking like this6 points

Yeah he’s being constructive. I imagine sometimes he gets to be like: “guys this is awesome, a fantastic idea, absolutely perfect, but let’s change it and see if we like it better”6 points

It’s weird that Butch Walker’s defense as producer was “I just did what the band wanted!” when that is not really your job as producer. You need to be an impartial set of ears and tell the band what a song needs and how to make an album sound better. If you’re just doing what they tell you to do then what’s the point of you? A technical job is just an engineer.6 points

Dang, it doesn't look like it's coming out at midnight tonight either. What a stupid album. I don't like it.6 points

To be a fly on the wall in that studio… the thing is, when you watch Quatro, it looks like Rob also did what the band wanted. Interesting that this keeps happening. Maybe the band (and by the band I mean Billie) is hard to persuade.5 points
-
I agree by that point Rob had done that too, but that was unusual for him. Most of their weakest efforts are with weak producers or where the band produced themselves. The pattern should be pretty clear to them by now that I hope they knew for 1972 they needed some tough love to be better.4 points

Well American Idiot was really overcompressed until they remastered it around 2012. But this is no criticism since the album was released in 2004 and the loudness war was going on really strong at that time. And I once saw a video of Andrew Scheps mixing Bang Bang and there he said that they indeed wanted quieter parts followed by louder parts, and the band instructed him by example to make the intro of Bang Bang quieter than the rest. So it was a decision and not by accident.4 points

You make a good point, I overlooked the fact that a good producer may help with song structures and they play an influence on what songs get into the tracklist. Totally agree about Butch Walker. Don't get me wrong he seems like a really nice, cool and enthusiastic guy but he was a total yes man with Green Day. He mentioned in an interview he wanted to be on a Green Day record, he's a fan. He also said in that same interview that FOAM is the most successful GD album since American Idiot. So I guess he's enthusiastic, nice, cool and delusional. Agreed, if they make it into the top 40 in 2023 then something is totally wrong with their new songs! Your best post yet. Dynamics are something that's been missing in Green Day's efforts since 21CB. It's one of the reasons why American Idiot songs are grandiose and are as impactful as they are. 100%, the boys have been fucking lazy and lack discipline! Didn't Billie Joe say he wasn't going to play an older song because he's lazy? lol I get trying to tone things down after 2 huge eras like AI and 21CB but now this low-stress environment thing has stretched way too far and far too long.4 points

I want to press the button on Green Day's 17th studio album. Every time the band does anything, I'll just look Mike Dirnt square in the eyes and say "weirder". Billie and I will set up a clapping practice facility while Tre Cool and I will seek out the baseball bat Mike used to record with and see what kind of trouble we can get into with it. We'll get an uber as to not get DUIs. At least two full albums will be lost because I don't know what the record button looks like. Duggey, you around here somewhere?????? HELP!3 points

Why do I feel like he’s really good at that — at hiding critique in a compliment. It’s the whole spoonful of sugar thing (what Billie needs to take his medicine 😄)3 points

I like his direction in that TikTok. “I can’t quite hear the toms there.” “I think going up to 170 might be good, so let’s try it.”3 points

https://americansongwriter.com/5-songs-you-didnt-know-billie-joe-armstrong-wrote-for-other-artists/ That Shrives song is great I’ve never heard it before. You can tell it was written in 2015 it sounds very much like the stuff he wrote for Les Skunks in Ordinary World. The Go-Go’s song is also good it has Billie’s style and sound all over it.3 points

I just went through 16 pages or so in this thread and we’re still where we were months ago- And if I’m gonna add something myself, who cares if their new album doesn’t end up making it in the top 40? if anything, green day is always top one for me and that’s all I care about 2023 here we come3 points

I hope Rob is pre-Trilogy Green Day Rob in this process. He has been a critical part of what we all love about Green Day's music and I think it'll be important for him to be a "no" guy and help shape this record. That TikTok video showing the interaction between him and Billie Joe gives me some hope that will be the case. With the last Green Day record he produced, the Trilogy, I think the whole three albums thing got in the way of allowing Rob to filter and have an impact on the songs, simply because of the amount of material. Getting things down to a standard album's worth of songs should allow him to do that. Anyway, I'm happy Rob is back at the helm and that Chris Lord-Alge is involved. This is absolutely nothing against Chris Dugan in terms of producing (non-engineering) and mixing, but you cannot match Rob and CLA who are legends at their craft.3 points

There's a difference between dynamics in an arrangement and the perceived loudness + mastering of a record though. You could take Letterbomb and squash it to shit (which is what they did on the CD) but it doesn't competely take away from those moments where everything drops out and it's just a single guitar up the middle. Songs like Outlaws and Bang Bang in RevRad would've achieved the same thing without having such stark changes in raw level. (that said I do actually kind of enjoy that element of RevRad, kind of feels punk af just to scare the shit out of the listener when the massive wall of sound comes in. It's just a shame the overall mix + master imo wasn't sonically up to scratch)2 points

You're just wrong. The album is not going to be out until 2023. The band themselves have said that. And @Sanity Loan has also said that (and he's the only guy here who knows anything). Even if the album is likely finished, that doesn't mean that it's going to be released within the next couple months2 points

When is the album coming out ??? I hope they're at the last stage.. but i really do think the album will be out by December.. come on you dorks, release the album fasttttttttt2 points

And meaningful lyrics. And given the 1972 theme of this project, I could see this being a rock opera based on events throughout Billie's childhood with characters based on himself, his family and friends, and possibly some references to Whatsername.2 points

CDs of FOAMF and AAF to round out my collection. grind up in a blender with some bratwurst. But now to talk about a much more superior band, I also got my hands on that Network MM2020 colored print from 1-2-3-4.1 point

I'm just happy for Green Day that they get attention with these shows and they obviously proved even to non-GD-fans that they are a great live band. Also regarding the upcoming album cycle.1 point

My fav time zone brain flip is leaving Fiji to fly to LA, a 10 hour flight, but you arrive before you leave! I am sure they are being paid very well F1 has a great deal of money.1 point
-
Time zones are nuts. So they flew out last night (Wednesday). It’s a 17 hour flight from LA (nonstop) with a 9 hour time difference. So when they arrive although it will be sometime late afternoon or early evening Thursday their time it will really be around midnight or later Friday morning local time so they skip Thursday entirely. Sleep for a day, acclimate for a day and the show is Sunday. No wonder they have to leave so early, and all for a single show. I imagine they’re being paid very very well.1 point

I have total faith in them as well but remember they were also on the trilogy. I disagree about the RevRad comment though, better production isn't going to make it a cohesive album. The middle of the album lacks. Sparkling those songs up aren't going to make them better songs. Rev Rad is not a bad album overall, but it could be considered somewhat of an average or bad GD album based on them having an above average catalog of albums. I want to be cautious about my optimism for their next effort but I am acknowledging the steps they have taken by actually going into real studios and bringing back some key personnel from their previous successes. The songs and album still need to be cohesive though and there's a level of professionalism they will need to return to. The album cover shouldn't be made on Billie Joe's iphone this time, they should call an end to that era. They also may need to actually go out and promote the album, this whole low stress thing they've implemented from the trilogy is not going to help them at all. A success would be having about 2-3 lasting singles from the album in airplay rotation. FOAMF had two singles in rotation but they never were in the rotation together and were basically pulled shortly after release. Making a long story short: for 1972 to be a success Billie needs to write some songs, they need to be professional and most importantly no fucking ketchup font album covers!1 point

It's gonna be a hit for sure. I have total faith in Rob Cavallo and CLA, this going to be Green Day how they're meant to sound and it's gonna chart and everybody is gonna love and we're gonna be like fuck yes 👌 They won't reach AI level again obviously, because rock isn't as big as it was then -- but like, I reckon it's gonna be at least as successful as recent mainstream rock albums. Trust me people Green Day are fucking coming back and I'm so hyped. Imagine RevRad had AI level production -- that would've gone down as a legendary Green Day album. That's what we're in for1 point

At this point of Green Day's career, I doubt we are getting records more often. I think that every new record could be their last and we should prepare for that1 point

I just feel that everybody seems offended by everything, fine if you are genuinely upset by something but it means creeps start getting away stuff due to the old "cried wolf" thing, and also serious things start lose importance.1 point

They told us months ago that it won't be released until 2023. That's literally all they've told us about 1972. Stop expecting an announcement. It's probably not gonna happen until at least December. We don't know how big of a project this is. Maybe the reason it's taking this long is because it's a lot longer or more of an ambitious project than RevRad or FOAM. Or maybe they just want to make sure that they get it right this time so we don't have another FOAM situation I'd get it if it had been 5 years since the last GD project but it's been less than 3 years since FOAM and there was a Network project and 3 Green Day songs (and a covers album) released since FOAM. Idk why everyone is so desperate to hear something immediately. I don't want them to release something before they're happy with the project1 point

No I don’t think we’re ever going to get 30 song setlists again. Not just because of Billie Joe but also because of everybody else. It’s probably not super easy to play drums on their songs for a two hour set for example. But speaking of Billie, he’s a 50-year-old who has struggled with addiction for most of his life and also has asthma to boot. He probably is in excellent shape given the circumstances, but honestly, let’s cut some slack where it’s due. We can’t expect him to do the same stuff he did 20 years ago with the same ease. That’s just not realistic and definitely not sustainable in the long run. However, he would absolutely benefit from transposing some songs, vocal training (I wouldn’t be surprised if he got some before HM actually), less screaming during shows (Rock in Rio what were you doing man 😭😭😭) and probably also not doing Jesus Of Suburbia at the end of shows when he’s already tired.1 point

This has been the last acquisitions that I obtained during 2021 and now at the beginning of 2022. I highlight the Billie Joe Armstrong vinyl that is almost impossible to find in my city in an electronics store. That vinyl is made in the Czech Republic.1 point
