A thematic prequel or sequel to AI would actually be super interesting. But in reality, I think the usage of Homecoming and Whatsername are simply for nostalgia due to being in Ocean Way (whatever it’s called now) and back with Rob.17 points

I think they're just easy songs to add to their TikToks and are thinking of them because they're recording at the same place. That's it.9 points

I honestly want a new sound from them. I want evolution to what they have succeeded with in the past. I want a crisp, polished album that is fresh. Something that rattles the fan base into saying “this is different” but is so undeniably good that we can’t write it off. We haven’t seen them do this in quite some time. FOAM was just a look back at music from earlier times (at least it did to me), I think GD has always thrived when looking forward, being in the present. Good news is they seem to be taking this process serious and they seem proud.9 points

Billie Joe Armstrong sat down with us to explain how the story will not only link to Whatshername and St. Jimmy, but also explore the depths of Lady Cobra, linking the Trilogy to American Idiot and opening the Green Day Multiverse to the idea that all past albums can be linked to one another. For example, BJA teased us that while taking a dookie he realized that 1972 should be expanded into an LP as opposed to the originally planned EP. Furthermore, Tre Cool said he was always the father of all motherfuckers.8 points

I hope it’s just a “we think this is American Idiot- level great” and not “this is part two” or connected in some thematic way. They said they’d never really do that and I wouldn’t want them to.8 points

I can see the press release now American Idiot: 1972 will follow the now infamous story of St Jimmy and Whatsername, though instead of looking at the lives of the youth in the Bush administration as American Idiot did, it will be a different universe chronicling their lives as they navigate through the 70s and 80s. This will be the first of a series of new albums, creating the GDM, or Green Day Multiverse, with 22nd Century Breakdown expected in March 20247 points

At least TikTok isn't owned by Zuckerberg. It's definitely huge right now and it seems like the GD promo team has chosen to focus on it for better visibility and to appeal to "the youth". Please God, no GD TikTok dances.7 points

The American idiot songs in the background are surprising me a little. I wouldn't say that what we've heard so far from the teasers sounds hugely like AI, so I'm presuming it must just be general nostalgia. Also, because of this, I don't even think the songs are there to indicate "AI greatness" or whatever (though I'm not excluding that possibility), but perhaps to underline the fact that this will be a bit of a nostalgic album in various ways, as I speculated a few months ago. I have to say, it's interesting that they've been providing us with video teasers, but very little new audio from the album. Personally, I'd quite like to hear another snippet from a song or something. That said, any teasers are better than radio silence, so I'm still grateful for that.6 points

I don't think it's a continuation of AI in any way, I think that chapter is closed. Hopefully this new album will be close to the same level as greatness as AI though6 points

I'm also wondering why these are only being uploaded to TikTok. I'm not a fan6 points
-
Why are they promoting it more on TikTok and not on Instagram, Facebook or Youtube? Is tiktok really more popular? Because I'm never on this app lol6 points

I’m willing to wait if the end result is incredible. I know we all want new music now, but letting something marinate for a while and be crafted into something beautiful will be a much greater payoff, especially when they seem so proud of this project.5 points

Anything Rev Radesque is amazing in my book. (I know a lot of ppl consider the album 'safe' but it's my fave by them. So many bangers. [no pun intended] )5 points

I really hope the AI songs in these teasers aren't trying to hype up the album as as big or bigger than AI because often when artists says things like oh it's like xyz popular album, it's never the case and it just feels disappointing.5 points

I hope it's not a prequel or a sequel. American Idiot was an amazing album with an incredible story but it's in the past. If it's a concept album I hope it's gonna be a complete different story.4 points

They’re definitely drawing a lot of comparisons to AI to indicate this one is a big deal too. Also Whatsername was the big final song they recorded that made Billie get all emotional. So are they at the end of recording 1972? It does seem like they’ve abandoned Instagram. TikTok is where all the kids are at. I really don’t want another app I won’t use4 points

I still remember this teasing post from November 2014. RevRad didn’t come out until October 2016. https://m.facebook.com/GreenDay/photos/a.10151561018964521.1073741825.21275344520/10152879105564521/?type=1 Long teasing is not something new from this band, be patient 😝3 points

When they began teasing this project in 2021 I certainly thought a 2022 release was the goal. Hopefully it is.3 points

As the days into weeks roll by... That's what this 1972 business feels like: an ordinary world. I like the 16 track idea. 16 is a good number. Today, I feel like the album could be very Rev Radesque, but I'm not sure. The crystal ball is feeling weird.3 points

I think the band often had the tendency to produce follow up records having a marked contrast with the predecessor. Maybe with the exception of Insomniac and 21CB. In general I think they understandably like to go against expectations, so I would not see a record with a marked different approach from FOAM as something weird. After RevRad fans wanted/expected something in that direction, we got the opposite and the cover simbolize that. Now the whole thing might be upside down. Then echoing AI in the teasing also makes commercial sense of course, but I think going back to Rob, that studio, equipment etc. does hint to a overall very different vibe for the record.3 points

European tour is starting soon. Maybe they moved back to the Uk to finish the recording and be closer to the first tour date. Maybe it’s old footage. Who knows.3 points

FOAM was 10 tracks and 26 minutes long. So if you add 3 songs that are 2 minutes long each, 2 songs that are 3 minutes long each, and a 4 minute song, that makes 16 tracks totaling 42 minutes3 points

I'm guessing maybe that's when he started songwriting for what became RevRad and maybe he was shooting for a 2015 album. Something probably delayed the process along the way. Even the best songwriters get writer's block sometimes.2 points

I guess they would still be born in 1972 even if they were 51 😂 I think it likely does matter to them to get it out on all of their 50th anniversaries though2 points

To subvert peoples expectations and shit on their own legacy. But now they seem to be doing the exact opposite of that so go figure. Like I said above, they chose it (and scribbled over it) for FOAM to tell you that AI was exactly not what you were going to hear. They wanted you to forget it. And now they’re all “Hey guys, remember AI? Wasn’t it great?” 🤪2 points

If this album is an homage to AI, you have to wonder why they chose the artwork for FOAM, which is basically the arm of the hand holding the heart grenade.2 points

They want to increase followers numbers in TikTok, I guess I'm not a fan of these videos that says nothing new btw2 points

Might be older. But i'm confused as well... maybe the social media person forgot to post it and decided to post it now? It's strange that we'd get 2 tiktoks within the hour. And yeah, tiktok is kinda everywhere. Get at least an ad on YT a day from it. An older friend of mine has it, and my male room mate browses and watches videos on there for hours on end. (Which is not healthy imo)2 points

2 weeks from tomorrow, they head to Germany to resume the tour. So I'm pretty sure they'd have to be wrapping up the recording sessions any day now. Hope we get an announcement within the next 2 weeks!!!1 point

Maybe it could be the story of St. Jimmy and Whatsername’s childhoods?1 point
