This idea that the band secretly doesn't like a record they released and promoted fairly heavily feels a lot like fan fulfillment and not based in any reality. Saying that the interviews felt dishonest is just such a bizarre thought to me, and it's an idea that's pretty prevalent around here. Re-appraising a record in hindsight is one thing, but this notion that they were promoting a record they didn't truly believe in is just ridiculous. That's just not what Green Day does. They very clearly were excited for FOAM and seemed quite proud of it.9 points

As a longtime lurker of these boards (mostly) and even longer time fan of the band (I'm old), I can't help but notice a trend that happens: the band posts something or shares something on social media, and then there's a rumor or theory coming off of that that's taken as true and just carried forward and repeated as if it's fact. What I mean is, there's lots of comment and conversation that Rob is back as producer that's all based on one photo of the back a bald guy's head. That's far from a confirmation. It's a fun possibility and even something that I would like to be true, but it's far from a given. The reason I say anything about all is not to be a wet blanket, but I feel like this happens a lot on here (and even on Reddit) to the detriment of the music. I saw it a lot before FOAMF that I think is why the actual release of that album was so jarring for people (myself included). The actual music flew in the face of everything people had been talking about and expecting. I know Panicland was partly responsible for that too, but even with the first few teasers of this project, the idea that it was following a specific release pattern was floated, then taken as true, and then when the band didn't release something on that patterned scheduled, people were upset and disappointed. Love this band, love reading this forum and seeing other people's theories and internet detective work, but I can't help but point this all out especially after living through the FOAMF reaction.7 points

I hope not, to be honest, unless some songs are kept relatively short like on Nimrod. AI is already pretty long, but I actually quite like that it has 13 songs, 21CB is a bit too long for my taste. Seeing that they recorded 6 songs in the first round and assuming that this is a full record, perhaps we're looking at something more in the direction of 12-14 songs.7 points

I don't think there will be any announcements anytime soon, because they are obviously still recording. We're just going to have to be patient. Obviously the guys are excited for it. We didn't get any hints so far ahead with FOAM did we? The drawn out hinting seems different.7 points

Soo Greg told me he'll be in London for a while, but unsurprisingly he didn't answer my question on whether 1972 will be an ep or an album š7 points

Hang on - London, Abbey Road Studios, Rob Cavallo or doppelganger - call me Mike Dirnt but could this be Green Day firing on all cylinders?5 points

I agree it will be later than we think but also it would have to come out this year though right, since the 1972 reference has more meaning as a fiftieth birthday year. They're going to want a new album to promote once the summer festival season is over. Right now they have shows through September. Oct-Nov makes sense. I don't know how common it is to release an album in December, it's a little late for holiday gifts.5 points

I like the vocal editing on the Trilogy the most. They really took the effects and most of all the background vocals to the next level and everything sounds really clear4 points

I'm watching an episode from one of my favorite YouTube channels right now, and it's artists creating drawings from emo lyrics, and the episode host just said "So, the other thing I think is kind of emo-ish is like the Green Day accent where it sounds like a surfer trying to be a chimney sweep" and I cracked up. That's such a specific and hilarious description. I was dying. š The delivery just makes it that much funnier. Here's the video. It's at 28:11.4 points

Thinking about the promotion that will eventually happen with this album is it too soon for them to be honest about FOAM? Usually by the next release they're ready to admit what went wrong with the previous one. The interviews for FOAM felt so dishonest in the way they praised it I wonder if we'll get more this time about it or if they'll pretend it never happened.4 points

I wonder if Rob fully expected to produce the follow up after his success with AI and when that didn't happen there was some bad feeling. I know the band are notorious for not communicating, and they had that drama with Linda Perry when she assumed she was producing 21CB and she wasn't but no one told her. Rob may have gone through a similar thing, thinking he was producing but not being directly told he wasn't, just learning about Butch Vig through the grapevine.4 points

Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Cavallo back on board, holy shit! Gentlemen you had my curiosity; now you have my attention.4 points

Yeah, the assumption didn't just come from the fact that there's a picture of the back of a bald guy's head. I mean, it's the same scar of the same shape on the same position of the head on a bald guy with glasses. Obviously that's not to say that's it's a confirmed thing, but what are the odds that Green Day is going to work with 2 different guys who look the exact same from behind Assuming it is Rob, why would they post a teaser for the album that includes him unless it's to suggest that he is working on the album. I mean, I suppose it's possible that it's for the purpose of trolling us (as they've been known to do). Also what are the odds that Rob just happened to be in London while the band were there recording their new album?3 points
-
Donāt want to be a downer but even if we knew definitely it was Rob, without confirmation he is producing we are still making assumptions. He could just be in London and dropped in for an hour. Just be glad there is something coming and stay calm people! šš3 points

their last lp had 10 songs, only 2 songs are (imo) solid green day songs (in the meaning of how much i like them personally) the trilogy era was very special to me, we got 37 new songs, 16 songs i still love to hear, and many of the others are also pretty good i dont care if we get a new lp with 18 songs or just 9, i dont care who produces the songs, i just want them to sound passionate again, foam was okay-ish, but you could literally feel that "sth is missing", i really hope they release some good creative stuff again, because they can be good punk musicians, if they want to and if its not forced somehow3 points

Yeah, exactly. That's not what I would say is a factual confirmation... What I'm saying is that it's a fun theory with some cool evidence to back it up, but not something to just take as hard truth.3 points

This. I donāt care what anybody says. Look at the promotion, the interviews, the fact that they wouldnāt play any of it on tour. They were underwhelmed with that album way before the fans were. Maybe thatās why the response was meh too. They seemed meh first. We both made the same point lol, but yes this exactly3 points

Are there really someone who still talk shit about the trilogy? osh I loved and still love it. I wanna say to the world I LIKE NIGHTLIFE. My job is done ahah That's the point I'm excited and curious. We all know GD makes the music but producers still have an important role and of course when we say "classic green day" we don't mean we expect another Dookie 'cause honestly I don't want it, it exist yet. What I understand when I hear "it's green Day" it's... just Green Day, doing the music they like with their unique style, with passion, and love, passion that they really knows how to impart in us, to make us feel hyped because at first they ARE!3 points

The reason Iām excited to see them back with Rob despite the ups and downs of the past is that this seems to me like another attempt at a milestone record. Rob was the one who with Billie literally charted a course for their career along the lines of legendary classic rock bands, and particularly The Beatles and The Who. So this is your breakout album, this is your experimental phase, time to do that concept album, etc. If theyāre with Rob in London (and particularly Abbey Road) they have another career defining move in mind with this record I think. Thereās no way they havenāt discussed this within the greater context of their past discussions over the years. There was a road map and maybe they feel like they got off course and are returning to it.3 points
-
I certainly agree that bands or fans blaming stuff entirely on producers is ridiculous. That said, it's literally a producer's job to steer things (either softly or more aggressively) one way or the other, so of course they have an influence, that's what they're paid for. I don't want to get into the "old vs. new Green Day" debate, because at this point I think "classic Green Day" can be understood to mean different things to different people. What I will say is that, yeah, it might be playing it safe, but pretty much of all of my favourite Green Day albums, with the exception of 21CB were produced by Rob Cavallo. What makes me more excited though, is that this is a guy who knows the band really well. He has produced some of their most loved and most hated records and worked with the band for years. If they indeed "returned" to him, in a sense, it could actually be quite cool to see what they come up with. All along I kinda got the sense of this being an attempt of a sort of homage project, very retrospective in its outlook, perhaps trying to take into the account the good, the bad and the ugly of the band's long career. Either way, I'm genuinely excited to see where things go from here.3 points

Just here to say: ROB CAVALLO SAVE US ALL By the way I guess we will have something at late summer maybe, like Oh Love and Bang bang and after the Summer tour is over I'd say new album AND World Tour ā¤ļø Like arena tour (that are the best, sorry festivals). Now I just want to hug Cavallo (if he's actually with them ahah)3 points
-
The filter has been used since before Nimrod hell listen to American Idiot acapellas filters galore and the use of the vocals and the wall of sound for 21st was intentional3 points
-
Iām beyond excited both myself and for them because this has to be another career milestone moment for them to get to do this. They really want to cement themselves in history as the punk Beatles3 points

Yeah, totally. This all counts as evidence in the column of Rob having a potential role in what they're currently doing in England. I wasn't arguing against fun speculation and internet sleuthing. It's about treating it as a confirmed fact on scraps of evidence, however convincing or unconvincing they may be.2 points

Hopefully they donāt cut it down to 10 songs again like they did with FOAM!! Although theyāre clearly more enthusiastic with this one!!! With FOAM, all promotion was directed towards āHella Mega, Hella Mega, oh and by the way we have a little album coming out too.ā2 points

Seeing that theyāre still working on the album, I hope it ends up having 16-18 songs!!!2 points

Everyone missing cavallo but when that trilogy came out everyone was like wtf is up with the production rob fucked up and even green day blamed the sound on rob . no matter what green day are the ones that decide how they want their .usic to sound and its not like butch was like put more hand claps. Billie been in love with hand claps for awhile now. Everyone needs to relize green day is killing their sound not producers2 points

I'm not really sure why we're talking about vocal filters seeing that they were used pretty heavily on both 21CB and the trilogy (and also to some extent on AI and previous albums), as well as RevRad & FOAM, all which of course were produced by different people. So, in my opinion, Rob Cavallo being a part of this project says very little about how many or what kind of vocal filters they'll use. On the other hand, it probably is a soft indication that, as I think @pacejunkie punk pointed out, this might be a return to a more "classic Green Day sound", whatever that is understood to mean.2 points
-
Well, we've made it to 100 pages of speculating. Who knows how much longer it will continue but I have a feeling it might be a while...2 points
-
perhaps you need to look up the definition of crystal clearā¦ as the filter is very clear as day being usedā¦ and again the sound of 21st was intentional2 points
-
BJās vocals are crystal clear on AI (and before). On 21CB, they sound muffled. I donāt know what to tell you.2 points
-
All subjective but I thought wall of sound was complimentary for 21CB since they were going for that 70ās-arena rock type of style. I like hearing Green Day sound big. What I didnāt like about that albumās production is a little more ineffable, everything (vocals and instruments) just sounds so computery crisp. Iād love to hear what that album wouldāve sounded like with analog production.2 points
-
Who are you talking to? If it was me, did I say I didn't like it? I was just pointing out that they have a tendency to do this. In the RevRad interviews, they talked about how the Trilogy albums were a lot for people to absorb. During the Trilogy they said 21CB was a bit over the top and stressful. During FOAM they said they didn't want to do long or feel good songs anymore (references to what they did for RevRad). So I was wondering if we'll finally get to hear their unfiltered thoughts about FOAM given the reception it got in general.2 points
-
Eh I kind of disagree on this. 21CB was the start of filtering BJās voice to hell, and I donāt think the wall of sound approach used on it suited them all that well (not saying I donāt enjoy the album, but itās not one of my favorites, especially sonically). Now take a look at Robās output with them, and the only questionably produced project is the trilogy. The rest is A+ work from all angles. I think Rob just āgetsā the band and knows how to get the best sounding (and just best period) songs from them. Hard pass Iād prefer no album at all than have Butch W stain their legacy again.2 points
