  1. Late reply, but I really fucking miss Butch Vig. Sure Rob produced AI and TBP which are some of the best albums out there... but he also produced the trilogy and man, that was some really fucking bland production, I don't even know what happened there but while the trilogy has some great songs, it NEVER should have released in the state that it did. Now luckily for us we have Demolicious and Big Guitar Mixes to help fix some of the issues, but at the end of the day Mr. Cavallo had a hand in letting the trilogy release the way it did with his name on it as producer. Butch Vig on the other hand produced many of my other favourite albums from multiple artists and all of them have aged like fine wine... and then of course there was 21CB which I truly believe is hands down one of the most underappreciated albums of all time, while simultaneously also being one of the best. I really hope it wasn't a one off production job with the band. I would LOVE to see them work together again and I really hope it happens. Edit: I feel I should clarify that I am not at all opposed to GD and Rob Cavallo working together again, I just think at this point in time I would prefer the band work with Butch Vig should the opportunity ever arise again. Everyone fucks up sometimes but that's how we live and learn. No disrespect meant to anyone and especially not the guy who helped define who I am with albums like American Idiot.

  2. That means more than any publicity stunt statement about canceling the show IMO. Doing stuff when you know nobody is looking.

  3. This. I've loved the Rob-produced albums, but the trilogy just doesn't hold up to any of them. It sucks, cause it has some good songs. Even with the filler, it would've been great if the production wasn't as lame as it was. The worst part is X-Kid is probably my favorite GD song, and the fact that it hasn't gotten an Otis Mix or was on Demolicious blows. I'd love to hear a Big Guitar version. I loved 21CB when it came out. It was a perfect blend of Bruce Springsteen and The Clash imo. Having that wall of sound production quality was great to listen to, and going back to whatever it was that they did with the Trilogy was a huge let-down. That's why I loved RR so much. Yeah it was "safe", but production wise? It blew the trilogy out of the water. Everything was louder and actually sounded finished, as opposed to before. Hopefully with this new album, we get some more loud guitar/bass/drum action again.

  4. 100% agreed. He didn't do that for clout. He did it because he's a genuinely good person who wants to learn more and educate himself on important matters such as this. I don't think the person should have even shared that personal message.

  5. They don't need to say shit. Literally the whole Western world is against Russia right now, a radical/punk statement it is not. I appreciate Billie reaching out and learning though.

  6. They're not really obligated to say anything more than "we're cancelling the Moscow show", and even if they did say shit it would make literally no difference to anything. It's not really worth whining about lol

  7. Heh, I live only 30km away from enemy country border (that is commiting genocide to my brothers Ukrainians), but I am soon going to live in Madrid. I can't imagine how this genocide looks to other people far from the conflict place - and, especially how Billie and others look at this. I think the album release date could be postponed - but as the things are unfolding right now, the war might be over soon, because we are helping Ukrainian soldiers a lot with money and weapons. I know Billie is very sensitive regarding these topics (hell, whole American Idiot is anti-war), and it could influence the release date. But I can wait. Most importantly I am saving more money to donate for my fellow soldiers and praying the slaughter soon ends.

  8. Nah you're 100% right, but apart from Warning and 21CBD Rob did all their albums before Butch Walker, he was pretty much a member of the band I like to think he had a fairly hands off approach to Trilogy, as it was co produced by the band, he probably let them take a fair wack of the creative control... I dunno Edit: what do you mean by TBP? The play?

  9. It’s very easy to jump on any bandwagon, it’s actions that count. We know who this band are from their actions in the past, supporting many great charities and causes over the years, publicly and quietly. That’s what’s important, nobody for one second can think they support Putin.

  11. Surely the point with their statement is exactly what they say, this moment is not about them - it’s about Ukraine! There is no need to draw attention to them, they are not the important thing here. I understand how people feel but on reflection I like their statement.

  12. To be fair I never for one second questioned their hearts. I know Billie is an extremely caring, generous person. Maybe he’s just so modest about it he doesn’t shout it from the rooftops, but for a band that are known for taking political positions and considering the heavily social/political punk scene they come from, their public positions in recent years just come off as anemic to me and not very inspiring.

  13. These days, you are either "pandering" if you speak up or "complicit" when you are silent. GD shouldn't care about what keyboard warriors will think.

  14. Yes, thankfully. Having free media and freedom of speech isn’t to be taken for granted. It’s a lot of luck. That’s way Crush doing the censor’s job themselves to spare the state-controled media a bit of work is a choice some people in this thread question.

  18. 100%. I am a massive sucker for X-Kid, Stay the Night, Rusty James and more.. I just wish those songs got as much love as what the albums of the past had, regardless of who produced them. I think this late in the band's career, it's very important to be far more careful with what they are putting out there and making sure it's as good as it can be first and foremost. I don't care how long it takes, as long as it's another album I can look back fondly on and the only one I can look back fondly on since 21CB came out in 2009 is RevRad, side projects aside and that's simply not good enough for a band as talented, gifted and with as much calibre as Green Day. From what I have heard of 1972 so far, its got the potential... but songs need more than just potential to truly stand the test of time. Thanks, I should have been more specific 😅

  19. A statement made by a band doesn’t have much of an impact under any circumstances, which is also why I’m not too pressed about what GD does regarding this. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t hurt my feelings. I’m honestly too preoccupied to bother with anything that trivial. Putting that aside, you’ve just said something that shows a lack of understanding both of the history and of the present. I’d like to try and explain it, even though it’s honestly draining to have to explain things that are obvious to everyone who ever lived east of West Berlin. But I’ll try to do my best. There are people in Russia who are currently being persecuted, because they have called the “special military operation” a war or an invasion or said they’re against the war (What war? There is only an operation indended to stop a genocide of Russians. Saying it’s wrong to do this clearly is treason). You can end up in jail for taking part in protests. People “smuggle” news to Russia by copypasting news into Google reviews of restaurants. It’s nothing that foreign to most of the region - my uncle spent a few years in jail for painting anti-soviet graffiti during the Soviet occupation (that was also a “special military operation” by the way), the same almost happened to his dad for voting against putting up a statue of Stalin in his town (thankfully Stalin died and shortly after the official policy regarding him changed), just to cite examples from my own family. In a situation like this, it doesn’t matter what you put out there - it’s going to get censored and if you manage to get past censorship, which is a lot easier these days thanks to social media, you’re risking legal repercussions. Or not even repercussions - Russian activists don’t even have to bother to say anything, they often get busted in advance of events they would protest against. In spite of all of that, hundreds of thousands of people signed an anti-war petition, they still speak out on social media and risk high fines and serving time in jail for taking part in protests. Do you think the director of the Moscow theatre would have got to keep her job if she hadn’t stepped down as part of her protest? Do you think the climate scientist who apologized for the invasion at the UN panel is keeping his position at a state-owned institute? Should they have used an euphemism instead? People who actually are affected by this are trying to get the truth out at the cost of personal discomfort. That’s what they have to do. The alternative is repeating the official lies or silence. Of course, US companies with very little to lose aren’t going to help them but you know, given the circumstances, it’s kinda like… you see people risking their lives to say the obvious - that there is a war - and then you see someone who’s risking nothing going in a circle around the elephant in the room and you’re a little like “damn…” I hope this explains it. Euphemism was the language of the USSR and it’s the language of Putin’s Russia.

  20. I feel this. There sometimes is bit or confusion when I was making comments on this thread of other threads about something lacking. I meant for over the past few years they’ve seemed like they’ve been not very super passionate about anything especially promoting or new music. Except for the Longshot. That was a pleasant surprise and it was amazingly fun. But that wasn’t all of Green Day. Tré and Mike seemed to purposefully distance themselves from the Longshot. The Hella Mega tour didn’t have anything too surprising or fun, the behind the scenes videos were not very behind the scenes and seemed to just be a ploy to build the Oakland Coffee mailing list. Except for Tré Cool and his behind the scenes shower livestreams from the tour. God bless him. He’s funny and interesting and definitely can’t say he doesn’t try to bring the behind the scenes to friends and fans while on tour.

  22. Of course. Many of us are fortunate enough to be able to forget, or never know, the realities of a censored press.

  23. What you all don’t seem to understand is that they used an euphemism so that their press release would come through Russian censorship.

  28. Not sure if that’s true. We took out the Iranian leader and installed the Shah who was friendly to the West with their oil. He was a tyrannical dictator we propped up. We armed the Taliban to kick the Russians out of Afghanistan. I’m not comparing us to the tyrants of today but we’ve had our share of shitty moves foisted on other countries when it benefited us.

  30. I agree with this completely. I really don’t understand this obsession with everybody needing to make a public statement on world affairs these days when realistically most celebrities are just doing it for PR reasons anyway. Or because they’re scared of getting canceled, apparently, based on conversations I’m seeing on the forum. It’s like the equivalent of changing your Facebook photo and feeling like you’re “helping.” Is what happening absolutely horrible? Obviously. Any rational person can see that. I don’t need to see the band members personally post that for my own validation of their opinions. And I’m not going to go posting about it on my own social media because I’ve been ignorant of the situation up until this point and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But as Lindsay said above, I really really don’t think we need to belabor this point any further. Unless we’re specifically discussing the decision to not tour in Russia right now, please move the conversation about whether the band is making public statements on the situation into the other thread she referenced. (This paragraph is just directed to the thread as a whole.)

  31. He absolutely reeks doesn’t he? Can smell him from here. Sooner he joins 5sos etc in irrelevancy the better. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with how Green Day have cancelled their show. The only bit of the statement that means anything is that the shows cancelled, everyone knows why.

  37. C’mon guys. I come to this forum to read about GD. If I want to hear about an international war I can look literally anywhere else, since it’s inescapable now. GD cancelled the show, we all know why, so can we move on and keep any discussion about the war to the appropriate thread.

  38. They have been playing it safe for a long time. There’s no way the same guy who wrote a letter to a grandmother telling her to fuck off is the same guy in this band. Or the band that took Pansy Division on tour and told a bunch of people to fuck off. He’s at home being boring and sheltered and not doing anything to rock the boat. I’m pleasantly surprised he did the Longshot tour but that’s about it. Ivory Tower and keeping the status quo. The random thoughts thread talking about the Rev and Fink putting Billie Joe into the fetal position and begging for mercy is incredibly apt. I love Billie Joe but the past few years are disappointing in several ways. Totally not one to make much of statement or get too uncomfortable. I miss the wild impulsive passionate guy. I still like this guy but… Yeah… Totally a safe player and not too dramatic or passionate anymore.

  40. Well it’s not exactly the statement I thought it would be. Much too wishy washy to just say this isn’t the time for a rock concert. How about saying this is a protest against Putin’s unjust war? These guys used to be punk and take political stances. I mean they can’t even say they are canceling to show solidarity with Ukraine? That’s not even controversial. The whole world is doing that. When did these guys lose their balls?

  43. I wouldn’t even call FOAM a style. Part of my issue with it as an album is that the style is all over the place. Songs like Fire Ready Aim sound dry as a bone and recorded very straightforward, other songs like Oh Yeah and Junkies on a High slather on production elements carelessly imo. With 21st Century Breakdown you had lots of different kinds of songs but they sounded cohesive, there was a unified front on the production.
