  1. I like the feeling of being led by Green Day and not quite knowing where it’s going .

  3. Yeah I completely agree with you. Think there's a lot of layers to this and his song writing process. It's important to keep in mind that he started this at such a young age. The album he wrote at 16 still holds up shockingly well. His songwriting formula has worked for 30+ years, and I can't imagine that he would want to diverge from it too much. Green Day's music has always been pretty youthful, and it makes sense that he goes into that mindset of his younger self. A song like outlaws is a great example. Honestly most of rev rad is. I think he found the sweet spot and they made some really good stuff, but eventually he pushed it too far and was so desperate to do it again with FOAMF, that it blew up in his face. I have faith that he can take that youthful outlook and get it back to where it needs to be again. Hopefully I'm not putting too much money on whatever this 1972 thing is, but the energy just feels different. It feels like the right kind of nostalgic this time.

  4. Hey everyone! I haven't really gone through this thread at all, but I've been thinking a lot about what's to come from their next release and how that's going to compare to FOAMF. I've had some thoughts about Father of all for a while, and I accidentally ended up writing an entire essay about it today. I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions with everyone, and see what other people think. Obviously I could be completely wrong about certain things, but I had a lot of fun writing this and I wanted to put it out there. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1u91bAfYlAN_a27BvJytqki2OII2wLUnokRSxuUNKBSw/edit?usp=sharing Let me know what you guys think! I'm pretty proud of it for it being so spontaneous.

  5. Guys, Green Day lives for Music, we’re talking about some guys who after a world tour, starts Side-bands and do club tour because they can’t stay without doing music ahah

  6. Is it me or does that last clip sound haunting, sad and reflective?

  7. I don't think this is taking that long. The first teaser came out last month from memory? I think we're just used to something being teased/announced and then it's released the following week (HCTS, Pollyanna and Holy Toledo). Hopefully the longer promotion for this is a sign of a bigger/better release that they're more proud of.

  8. maybe its the same song, with that one being the slow intro and this one being the crescendum. green day loves doing this. also this intro is giving me "I'm So Tired" Beatles vibes

  9. They’re not going anywhere this is not their last release. They’re just marking turning 50 that’s all.
    6 points
  10. Everybody of them will turn 50 this year. In the last hint we could see some memories from them through the years. Anyone thinking this could be their last album?
    6 points
  11. Yeah it definitely does. Sad and reflective are good words to describe it Definitely agree. Kind of a somber look on his face

  12. I agree with a lot that you’ve written but it’s very late so I can’t really muster a proper reply. Billie has said he writes from the perspective of his younger self because he thinks you only get less sensitive as you get older and he doesn’t want to lose his connection to that sensitivity and… he’s not wrong, but at the same time, I don’t think getting stuck in the past is a solution. I can’t blame him for taking the escape route though. Maybe this is the way he’s made it this far and I can’t demand he makes better art at that expense… that said, there’s a specific kind of sadness/being lost in this too, I think.

  13. And now we’re speculating a possible break up?!?!?!? WTF is going on here?!?!?!?
    5 points
  14. Damn then I guess all the enthusiasm about putting out releases more regularly was bullshit and they're going to cancel the second leg of Hella Mega. Thanks for clearing that up, guys!

  15. Any precedent for this kind of thing with other bands? I mean, as a musician, unless you're going to retire and move on to other things, you're probably constantly writing new stuff, even if only 5 people listen to it and only 2 of those actually like it. For the sake of argument, and I'm not lending any credence to your assertion, as there's not really any evidence for it, but hypothetically speaking, it's possible Billie or the guys might get tired of being in Green Day or at least feel like they've hit a wall in terms of writing new material and therefore perhaps move on to other musical projects. Personal rows or young artists wanting to branch off into solo careers can also lead to bands breaking up, but I don't see the slightest bit of evidence for any of that. So, as long as Green Day exists, I think they'll continue to write and put out new music, whether it's successful/liked or not. And let's also not forget... (0:20)

  16. It's really weird you say that because something about that last clip made me wonder the same thing. First time I listened to it it made me so sad it brought tears to my eyes (maybe I was having a bad day!?) Maybe it really is just a look back at the last 50 years

  17. There will be no last album. Good discussion about Billie's writing. While I would definitely like something more introspective and personal, the nostalgia trap is something to beware, but luckily they haven't fallen down it the same way Blink have. Also, I do think Billie Joe broke new ground with songwriting on FOAM. As he said, it's the first time he's ever written about money in a real way, both on the title track and Oh Yeah!. So I do appreciate that, but there is SO much more to cover. The breadth of life he's lived is incredible and I hope he will dive into some of the parts he hasn't shown.

  18. I think this is one of his best looks ever, however many views that video has now, many, many are me ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  19. I think you are exaggerating the point of Billie trying to capture his old self on songs. Because he did some very good ones on last record, that aren't exactly about a past long gone, but more in the present. Writing songs is a dynamic process and sometimes things goes well and sometimes don't. If Billie Joe took 3 or so years to finish Scattered, then everything is possible. Any songs don't necessarily mean that they were recently written for a x record. They could come from the vault, or old sketches. Most recent example is Holy Toledo. The thing is, as time goes by, is harder to write something fresh without failing in repetition of themes. And for someone who is not as educated as Billie Joe, he has managed that very well. I wonder what else he has on the bag. It probably will be good

  20. How are we not discussing how cute Billie looks in this new teaser yet? I always appreciate the fact that he's abandoned the beard, but I'm really curious about that tuft of color in his hair. Did he do the 21CB blonde patches again? Also feels like this man's default attire outside of rock star mode is just hoodie. I can't blame him, though. Hoodies are great.

  21. What’s ironic is in some ways he was writing about more mature themes and life lessons in the nineties, with thoughtful songs on his marriage like Redundant and Church on Sunday. That’s all we’re talking about. It wasn’t boring at all it was interesting. He’s been through so much more since then.
    5 points
  22. That was an enjoyable read and I agree with much of it. I think Billie has actually said he didn’t think he’d live this long and it’s interesting to contemplate the idea that he never really took the time to consider what kinds of songs he would be writing at fifty. But maybe now he has. Now that the wishful thinking party of FOAM is over, he’s ready to contemplate what’s next? He still seems like he struggles with the concept of his own maturity, but I would like to see the themes in his writing be expanded on in an age appropriate way too, and I disagree with what Billie says in the audible book, writing from the perspective of your age doesn’t have to be boring.

  24. That’s Billie. Not sure the same is true for Mike and Tre. Billie will be making music until the day he dies for sure, whether with Green Day, a side band or on his own

  25. @greenday.stuff Good read, thanks for sharing. I agree with some of what you say and really disagree with some. I think because largely in this community Foam was not well received, many have come to believe it was badly received universally but that is not so. I am including this to make my point here https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/green-day-father-of-all/ I am also not saying all reviews were good, but this was not the slated album it has become in the interval in fans minds. I think non Green Day fans liked it a great deal more than ardent Green Day fans which is hardly a rare event for any band. I am not sure why fans find it so hard to take (not just here) when a band does something different, it seems like they are unable to put aside their preconceptions and just listen! I agree with a lot that’s been said, Billie Joe is often asked about his writing and frankly I don’t blame him for the variety of answers he’s given over the years but he did once say, “well I’ve got no new girlfriend to write about”, and that is sort of the point. He’s trying to keep writing different, new things but what about? A writer like he is writes so much from the heart and his own experiences this can be a real issue. Many bands have far shorter careers than Green Day and often it seems like they just run out of material! Approaching 50 and with all that’s gone on in the world I could well believe has made him very reflective so fuelled his creativity but it doesn’t make him a different person from when he was 30. If at 30 he was goofy, irresponsible (his word) etc etc, he still is at 50, he’s just older, not different. More mature you say, this band? I think that’s not very likely! 😂 Well, maybe a little. Either way I can’t wait for whatever is next.

  28. This is what I've wanted for them forever. Give me a genuine sentimental album. The newest teaser sounds good. If the song sounds like that it'll be a breath of fresh air. The end shot with the trees reminds me of the 1039 cover

  29. When I first noticed the new teaser, I stopped everything I was doing and watched it about 10 times. At first, I thought Billie was sharing an old clip! Then I realized that's our current Billbo in the flesh! He looks so fucking cute!!! His puppy dog eyes and his pout while he's playing GAH I really hope we get the answer to what is 1972 very very soon.

  32. I was wondering the same thing 😄 It took us longer than usual to come on here to discuss his current look. Not ashamed to say I've already watched the teaser dozens of times. He looks adorable. The way he's kind of resting his chin on the guitar. Love how expressive his eyes are too. He's deep in thought while playing. At first I thought the colored tuft of hair was just a grey spot he missed lol

  35. I think it does. His expression when he’s playing it adds to the mood too

  36. Thank you! I'm so glad that you liked it. I 100% agree with that. I just know that he has so much good material locked away inside of him that he just won't let out because he put himself in this box. There's a whole other level of depth and something special about what you've learned and experienced throughout the years. He needs to just embrace it. Green Day are a youthful band at heart, and I think he's afraid to step away from that because it's the one thing that has remained consistent throughout their entire career. They have always had that energy to them. And while it's important, I think that much of it has been exhausted. I think so many musicians in particular fail to realize how important it is to have their music age with them. It's kind of sad. You don't see Clint Eastwood playing characters that are 30 years old. He plays his age, and it's still fucking badass. He still encompasses his youth without trying to be it. Green Day need to grow up again. They're stuck. The longer you try too hard to be something you're not, the worse you get. And they're only going to fall deeper and deeper. They are stuck in a cycle and they need to get out of it. The need to have that cigarettes and valentines epiphany again (not asking for another American Idiot, but you get the idea). And I'm hoping that father of all flopping was the spark that they needed. There is a right way to do this while still remaining energetic and youthful. But they're not going to get anywhere if Billie Joe doesn't swallow his pride and embrace his age. I wanna hear songs about middle aged life. Every other band still won't shut up about being a 20 something. They need to take a risk. The some of the best advice comes from age and life experience, and they need to put that into a song.

  44. I mean those are straight up love songs but I was thinking more the songs on the themes of the typical struggles in a marriage and the work and compromise it takes to overcome them. That shows maturity. A love song can be written at any age. Still Breathing is a great example. I think the whole rehab experience forced him to grow up temporarily but he’s since regressed again lol
    2 points
  45. EXACTLY!!!! Back then he was able to focus on the present, but now he's just so desperate and stuck on his youth. He just keeps looking back instead of looking at the present regarding his own life. The best recent ish example we have is still breathing. The songs that focus on current politics and society are so great, and it's kind of frustrating that he refuses to do the same when writing about his own life. The best songs truly come from your own experiences. He's really holding back. He needs to let it all out.

  46. Could be but I think they have looked totally different shapes. still think the former 😁

  47. I would love the idea of this release being fun but also deeper and more reflective like a looking back on his fifty years in various ways and styles and not just “remember that time we used to party?”
