  1. I just saw this quite on tumblr: Were you sober when you wrote “Amy"? BJ: "I was on heavy medication. I was sober, but I wasn't clear. Seeing how it went down with her - something drew me to write that song. I don't write about people that pass away very often. I think I've done it three times: "X-Kid"; the one about my dad, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" [on American Idiot]; and "Amy." In a weird way, I'm almost desensitized by death, because I learned about it at such an early age. I have this family that is much older than I am, and I have a lot of friends who have committed suicide, gotten into drunk-driving accidents, hung themselves. So death has always been in my life. [Pauses, laughs grimly] That sounds really funny. But if you look back, I've been writing about addiction forever. There's this other side of me going, "I told you this shit was going down. You wouldn't fucking take it seriously.""

  2. Really hope they switch it up and play Holy Toledo but it doesn’t sound as generic/basic and easy singalongable as Pollyanna. Although I thought it was contradictory “everything is going to be alright/don’t let me down” I think most people thought it was a positive singalong. End of pandemic anthem. Although I really don’t think the pandemic is at the end but that’s a different thead/topic. If they stop evolving and surprising us I am going to be really sad. The unchanging Hella Mega setlist was hella disappointing but it was what it is… A giant machine/money maker with no room for surprises or mistakes. The Hit Machine of Green Day Hella Mega. I would love to go to Hella Mega but if that’s all Green Day is going to do that is heartbreaking. No surprises or fun or adventure or risks. I love the adventurousness of Green Day. They dropped FOAM as if it didn’t exist even though it’s their newest record. And I can’t believe how much I miss the Trilogy they dropped that too. FOAM honestly I don’t find it that terrible it wasn’t on the set list just surprising but it is a serious letdown that the Trilogy has been dropped for years now. I hope it makes a huge comeback. Just casually dropping Trilogy songs on random Green Day set lists. Holy Toledo would be an amazing awesome surprise live. It’s new, it’s unexpected, and yet it kinda has a Trilogy/FBHT vibe. It’s super awesome and new and exciting. I hope they still do surprises with awesome set lists and fun small club shows. If not… Long live the Longshot. Please for the love of all that is holy and good I hope the Longshot releases new stuff and tours again if Green Day is just gonna be a giant stadium act with the same set list forever. I hope they have enough in them to do both. I hope this is just another byproduct of the pandemic and the world basically being on hold or being super cautious. Didn’t the singer guy of Green Day say there would be a FBHT show? Or teased? Ugh I miss that guy teasing us on IG. Right now I’m expecting the Hella Mega set list forever and for them to play it safe and boring. The past year has been such a let down. No surprises and no fun. I miss the Network. I miss Fink. I miss the Longshot. I miss Billie Joe’s weirdness on IG. It’s like a ghost town for Green Days fans (for the most part). I am so desperate I would be absolutely surprised and delighted if the play Holy Toledo live. If Green Day are going to become rock’n’roll dinosaurs for the masses I hope the Longshot and Dead Mermaids and the Coverups etc make it interesting, meaningful and fun for those that really care about the band and the fun and meaningfulness of everything. I hope Holy Toledo is the great new hope/clue that Green Day are up to exciting new stuff.

  3. When you notice your barista has a heart tattoo on her middle finger and you have to resist telling her Billie has one there too. Also, when you're reading comments on the stock market and do a double take when someone says "it's been a Green Day."

  5. I'm so upset. I missed the sale and now GA is reselling for $700. and damn these seats are stupid expensive. I would settle down for seated tickets but there's no way I would pay $350 or 250. ahhh not even HM pit tickets

  6. I don't like his music. It's not for me. And he comes off as the biggest tool. Maybe it's just an act but I don't like it either way.

  7. A childhood friend named Brando. You can see him interviewed in one of the old VH1 specials like Behind The Music or something.

  10. Thank you! I don't know how I missed this one. I've tried to find every interview from that era and I guess that on slipped by me.

  13. I think it sounds quite autobiographical...like he's relating to her on the same level. He says he didn't know her but thought her loss was tragic. "Rock n roll tragedy, I think the next one could be me"...

  14. I’m not crazy about the way the song sounds production and instrument wise but the way it is sung with emotion and the lyrics are 💔 I just listened to it again. It’s magical. I love it. It’s been a while since I really listened to it. There’s a lot of parts of the lyrics that get me… This line kills me… ”did you tattoo a lucky charm to keep you out of harm's way… “ Like the danger was known and care was taken but in the wrong way and it wasn’t enough. To think of it in the bigger picture I think this song is important emotionally and lyrically. Once again the curse of the Trilogy having the best songs emotionally, lyrically and theme wise but kinda missing the mark with execution. The Trilogy is my fav but you kinda gotta think a little bit in a different way when listening to these records. I wonder if they were too rushed. I’m so glad they’re revisited with the Otis Mixes and the Longshot set lists. It’s heartbreaking that Green Day as a band has seem to abandoned the Trilogy. It means the most to me and maybe others too.

  16. It's my tumblr 🙂 Here's the part before this quote: The lyrics on "Uno!," "Dos!" and "Tré!" are loaded with references to dangerous excess and midlife crisis. "Amy" is about the late singer Amy Winehouse. You wrote "X-Kid" about a friend who never figured out how to be a middle-age punk. Were you consciously writing these songs about yourself? BJ: "Yeah. The guy in "X-Kid" died from the same habits I had. ¡Uno! is definitely the sense of "Be young, be free." The second album is the midlife crisis: "I want to live my life dangerously, because I haven't lived dangerously enough." And the third record is the reflection on reality. I've lived that arc my whole life, since I was 17. "

  18. If they've moved on from Pollyanna maybe there's a chance they'll switch it out with this one and we'll hear it at the future shows starting with SuperBowl Fest and the festivals in Atlanta and Tampa. Apart from that I'm expecting the same Hella Mega setlists. I'm pretty much expecting that setlist for the rest of their career

  21. That’s a really good starter pack. Or something for a crazy fan who has a bunch of gear already. I am a crazy fan. But I am heading down to my local guitar store… they already have it in stock… still gotta work out my budget though… they know me there… yikes… I really was hoping for a reissue of the first run of Billie Joe Armstrong Gibson Les Paul Juniors from 2006 or whenever it was. They’re like untouchable now and I missed the boat. The re-sales of those are $$$$. These Epiphones are rad. I’m excited to see who they inspire and what comes out of this. It’s me. I’m inspired. Can’t wait to see who else is and what happens next ❤️

  24. I liked it until I had a boss named Amy and she was awful and gaslighted me and my coworkers (one quit and then another quit in tears). I found another job soon after that. Now that song just rubs me the wrong way because of the name. 😔

  44. This is all a taste if that new freedom they have under Warner. Be prepared for a hodgepodge of music, random singles, EPs maybe an album or not. It’s what they wanted to do.

  45. Yeah so basically a little indie movie on par with Ordinary World. I wonder if someone involved was a friend of the band’s and asked them for a song I can’t imagine they had the budget to license anything major.
