I agree in all aspects, but I’m still curious what Sam Bayer came up with that it made them think it was too much. They were fully leaning into the sex drugs rocknroll stereotype.
@Yosuke Hanamura I forgot about Kill The DJ! That video sucks too! They're just riding motorcycles in a desert and then looking bored in a club. The only good part was Green Day performing (the outfit Billie wore for that was amazing!). I think Sam Bayer needs to give it a rest, especially after learning about that unreleased FOAM video. I'd still like to see it, though.
This picture @Rumpelstiltskin2000 posted in the BJA photo thread is too pretty to exist. Billie has the ability to stare across time and space.
OMG that first one! I mean all of them are awesome but that first one is so high quality. The eyes, the bottom lip, the lighting, the shadows…it’s gorgeous. His skin is beautiful. It looks like he can see you through the screen. I’m in the wrong thread aren’t I? Damn.
Back in the day there was a lot of theories that put it all into a meta context, but as they turned out mostly wrong, I think taking it at a face value is in the end the option that makes the most sense... We were like the Sherlock fans who couldn’t believe the last episode was so absurdly convoluted that they invented a secret good episode that’s certainly going to come out later
I agree but am sure the first one has been enhanced, or maybe better to say altered. He ‘s so beautiful there is no need to fake it, this one looks OTT to me.
I think what they ended up putting out was thrown together at the last minute that’s why it was just a studio performance cut with stock footage. If it was as debauched and hedonistic as Oh Love, I have a feeling I would have hated Sam’s FOAM video for their image. I still think that was all wrong and for them to go back and try to revive that sex, drugs and rock and roll vibe from the Trilogy felt like they were regressing not evolving. Glad that whole era is over it was wrong for them in every way.
He also directed the first video for Father Of All… the one Billie called chaos at iHeart and that they ended up scrapping. It was the one shot at the Madonna Inn and used all these extras (one of which had tweeted about it at the time and later her tweets were deleted). I would love to see it get leaked someday because it sounds wild. I believe unused footage like this was part of the shoot and why it may have gotten pulled:

They bought Mickey a fish and fishbowl but he knocked it over wanting to play with the fish. It broke and Tre went to get another one. The fish is called "Goldie"
To me JOS is just cringe edgy emo teens acting like posers and spoiled brats. With bonus "self harm is so cool!!!11". I was a teenager myself when it came out and cringed then as well. The message of the WMUWSE one is good but again with the cringe emo melodrama at the beginning . Not my cup of tea.
Yeah I remember the way they described the concept of it (them playing rockstar characters doing the "sex drugs and rock n roll" thing) was better than the finished result. I think the main problem was the band members were awkward , and the director just didn't really manage to make it look like they and the models were having a fun time. The uncensored Playboy version (which isn't just uncensored but an entirely differently cut video with different footage from the shoot) was a bit better because they looked like they were enjoying themselves a bit more.
Look like Billie is getting another custom guitar done by Tony at Schroom Custom Guitars:
