Just like with anything, mainstream moves in trends. Rock was a huge focus for a while, then LatinX, then alternative Pop, and then hip hop. It's just a big cycle. Rock is still alive and well, but if all you see is the Top 40 and mainstream music, of course it's going to appear dead. Sure, bands could go the Imagine Dragon route and make very radio friendly songs that get played to death in commercials for mainstream appeal. But most rock bands are choose to go their own path instead. And sometimes, a band will get mainstream attention seemingly randomly. It's just weird to see what gets popular and what doesn't. I really don't the iHeart incident marked an end of a rock era. The biggest impact it had was on Green Day themselves and the fans.5 points

He was pissed because NHL made them play it again. I think they weren't happy with how it sounded because the crowd was plenty excited. Also we suspect that he was pissed that they didn't get to perform longer because NHL billed it as a concert.5 points

When my parents picked me up I told them Billie was soooo mad5 points

The NHL video from January reminded me of this. That's a cold bellie.4 points

The Snoo is the easiest to understand. Van Gough trips up on Trans Am and Time Capsule, but otherwise his english is on point. Fink on the other hand. He needs a vocal coach, because he sounds like he's going down the dark, crazied vocal styling path of Eddie Vedder, who goes as far to HAVE a lyric sheet and just draw squiggles in them. Fink needs to go.4 points

To be fair, Green Day probably wouldn’t have been the main attraction regardless - they’ve just put out an album that was pretty average and at that stage of their career, they could hardly be exciting the same way up and coming bands were. However, they actively removed themselves from the mainstream. This incident ended their streak as a top 40 band, but who knows how much longer it would have went on anyway. Rock music just isn’t as big commercially anymore, so new bands had to adapt.4 points

Stage Billie is totally intimidating. Combine that with genuinely angry stage Billie and he's pretty scary. He also intimidates me because he's so beautiful. Another piano Billie just because. Favorite instrument and favorite boy!4 points

Do you guys remember David's Overalls? I was going through my cdrs and saw that. What a trip! That is a KILLER performance and definitely the best I've seen as well. I won my battle with cancer shortly before that song came out and man, it touched me. I sometimes change the lyrics around a bit on the one part: "I'm like a child that lost his only mother / I'm like a father barely keeping it together." Oh man.3 points

I went through my whole house and gathered together every Green Day related item and burned them today. Just kidding! I shot a video showing off my Green Day nerdiness and came across some interesting factoids along the way. I've got a Green Day issue of Kerrang from 2009ish and there's a little sidebar about The Network. Billie Joe decries them with lots of f-bombs as usual, but then says "they will have a second album". WHOA. Billie knew about WE TOLD YA SO! in 2009. Here's the exact quote - by the time the fuss died down, critics were not impressed by the band doing something so different, and that wacky image didn't help either. Armstrong confirmed this year that a second album will be released." Dude.3 points

His nose was so red!! And he looked sooooooooo cute in his wool coat. But not as adorable as the big fluffy coat he wore during soundcheck.2 points

I agree with a lot of that but I quite like radio, and I find most radio stations, at least in the UK, now play very limited styles of music. The chances of hearing something new that makes you discover a new band is really small.2 points

Oh tell me about it! You're super right about RevRad sort of catering to rock fans more. Sometimes I wonder if the Insomniac / Nimrod / Warning days were kind of like that? Not that I think they were doing it consciously.. just looking at the sorts of crowds they were likely drawing in years after their mainstream breakthrough. Perhaps getting boxed into that "rock" label with all the other punk bands by the late '90s before making a comeback in the 2000s? Sure, they are a rock act at heart. But few rock bands can say they made records like Dookie & American Idiot which were immense & just so culturally significant in their own separate ways - they transcended genre & impacted culture on truly a planetary level. It's just interesting to look at. 😛2 points
-
Agreed. And what did Green Day have left to prove anyway? They'd achieved everything at that point. If people wanted the 90s, they already did that! I guess I kinda wanted it 😛 Oh definitely. Maybe it wasn't a cultural catalyst at all. Just a good chronological marker. (For me at least). I think about Best Coast releasing "Crazy for You" a couple of years before & FIDLAR releasing their eponymous album in 2013. Just those sorts of bands "taking off".2 points

I'm still convinced it's FInk's vocals. It sounds way more like him than Van Gough. There's definitely still a filter effect happening, though. Whatever it is, I love it!2 points

That’s wild I didn’t think he ever admitted to being The Network that he would say something like that2 points

And when Billie came out to do another take "Now don't fuck this one up!" 😄2 points

You're doing a good job, honestly I'm still in the 'damn this is catchy' mode, I haven't moved onto lyrics yet!2 points

Trans Am lyrics Fentanyl lyrics Ivankkka lyrics Degenerate lyrics Respirator lyrics That's all that's there so far. They seem accurate enough I think! Also I think the first 'pressure' in the Fentanyl chorus is sung over the top of 'vanity', if you listen carefully you can hear both words!2 points

I think he could be a small bundle of rage, and pretty scary. (See what I did there 😗😗)2 points

I think this but then when I see him on stage he has the rockstar aura and I'm totally intimidated by him without him even being angry lmao Also2 points

I have no problem being a nuisance. Putting things too high for him to reach, messing up his hair randomly, stealing his sunglasses and putting them different places, and of course applying eyeliner in the middle of the night.2 points

Well good god, this is the first thing I saw this morning 😍😍😍 add me to the death list, he’s perfect, I love the hair, the glasses, the right amount of stubble and his lips 🤤 I don’t know why it didn’t post, but I said yesterday I was glad the @The Grohl had revived and that I always knew Billie had magical powers but didn’t think he’d use them to kill us! This man....🔥🔥🔥🔥2 points

You're right. It's easier for me to understand Van and Snoo, but I struggle with Fink He's so cute, there's no way to leave him out btw wow1 point

I really like that shirt. Ooh, and he's got a real leather belt. It's perfectly worn. Wow! (Took me long enough to be normal again, but I'm back, baby!) I wanna know who let him get up there without a scarf (and proper eyeliner). Ugh, we fangirls have to do everything around here 🙄.1 point

You're right about the rules. I feel more artists are finding ways to blur genres and it's really interesting. And though I like that there's so much access to music, it also has drawbacks like having too much. There's so much out there it can be hard to find new bands to really sink your teeth into.1 point

Re Trans Am- "she is a science fiction episode"- I thought it was "she is a science bitch and never told". Does that make any sense? No, but I never questioned it.1 point

So, just about all of us are deceased now? I can't say I'm surprised. What a massacre! I ain't gon' be revived no time soon neither (excuse my terrible grammar). That pic really took me out. Maybe I'll haunt Billie too. I'd probably eat all his food just to piss him off. He's either really cute when he's angry or really hot.1 point

I was wondering that and what it was for. It looked too good to be one of his usual selfies I call dibs to be his guardian angel 👼1 point

Totally! HOTG is a highlight for me, largely because of Fink’s backing, I just love it’s and that one of the reasons Tarantula reminds me of it. Yes, I hear something very similar on DIP but it is a little different, or it maybe is a vocal turned into an effect or something? It seems to change slightly as you listen if that makes sense. Still think Cancer is all of them.1 point

I have many thoughts on this record. I've listened to it a few times and I'm liking it. It's alright, but not amazing. My biggest complaint is that a lot of the songs are too short and just when I get into them, they're over (Prophecy, Heard Immunity, etc). I had high expectations for Heard Immunity and Art of the Deal and both of those were a little underwhelming for me which is a bummer. Other observations: - Theory of Reality: Love this song, but should I be concerned that my home state of Ohio is going to be nuked? The Network are very good at predicting the future... - Fentanyl: One of my favorites and didn't know they could write a song like this one - Respirator: Cracks me up! One of my faves - Cancer is the New Black: Sounds very much like a mix of Bouncing Off the Wall/Reto/Too Dumb To Die and Fever Blister in my opinion - Popper Punk: For reasons I can't explain...I actually really like this song 😂 - Pool Party: What a wonderful mess of a song. Would love to know what made them revisit Kill The DJ, but I love the jam/Gorillaz vibe on this one I would have been fine never hearing Pizzagate, Squatter, Hey Elon and Amnesia Vagabond. FOAM is better than this in my opinion, but I do love how they put things out like this. It's a fun record and it just amazes me how much music they've actually recorded together.1 point

People stop getting upset if someone doesn’t like this album or if someone likes this album music is subjective what may be good for you might not be good for another person and that’s ok1 point
