Reviewers are kinder then fans on this one, and when you have part of your fandom throwing shit at you, even if it is just casual fans and a minority of the hardcore ones, it doesn’t do good at all on social media. I feel this is becoming a new social media trend as well, people throw hate at everything, even stuff they say they had been fan for over “put a various amount of time here”. I think we also have to give this time, I feel this record could live a lifecycle similar to the Warning one. It looks like it is doing well as album sales and streams, the band has a huge tour coming soon, and the record is pretty much well received by the critique. The situation is not that dramatic IMHO, let’s see how this evolves. What makes me really laugh are the people calling this a “pop commercial record” made to climb the charts, make money, sell songs for car commercials, or whatever. This is the less commercial record GD had put out there in years IMHO. Some of these songs might have been commercial hits 50 years ago, some 40, some 20, a few maybe could have a chance now, but definitely are not aligned to the pop rock songs staying on top of the charts for months. Not only it is not aligned to what pop and pop rock is nowadays, but most of the songs can breaks the expectation of both casual fans, fans, and casual listeners. Saying that this is the “most sellout record of their career” as I read someone writing on social media is ridiculous.8 points

What I also find "interesting" about most of those very bad reviews is that they're all complaining about the album being superficial and lyrically weak (one of the German reviews even called it "lyrical diarrhea", my personal favourite😂), and I'm like WTF man, have you even listened to this album once, lol? I think the record has a lot more lyrical depth to offer than you would think when you look at the ridiculous cover and hear the title, but some reviewers obviously didn't do so much more than just that. A song like Meet Me On The Roof might sound like a light-hearted, happy little tune, but if you listen closely, you can actually hear the anxiety and hopelessness (I for one think it's pretty obvious that this song is about suicide - "All you gotta do is jump"). And that's only one example. So I think reviews like "it's just a bunch of carefree party songs" completely miss the point. I actually never really got a party vibe, it feels more like a party gone very, very sour, I think it's even one of the darkest and most depressing records they've ever made. Billie has always been so good at expressing sad, desperate feelings disguised as happy melodies and metaphors, and sometimes it takes a while to unfold their true meaning. That's what makes him such a great, but widely misunderstood songwriter. I think that's also the case in many of those reviews here. It's like nobody even takes the time to listen to an album closely anymore, even if it's only 26 minutes long. It's so much easier to hate it right away. ("Everybody is a staaaaaar").7 points

Observation I just made: I got a copy of the CD and the booklet has silhouettes of dancing women throughout the background of the pages. They look just like the FBHT women from the videos and album cover. Just more signs of FBHT influence in this record.7 points

Thank goodness! I thought I'd never see such a positive review of Fire Ready Aim! I've been defending that one since it was dropped 👍7 points

I can't stop thinking that this album has lyrics darker than Insomniac and is driving me to a mixture of sadness and happiness that hurts Anyway, Junkies on a high has made up to my top 10 Green Day songs. It rings real deep into my soul, in absence of a better name for it. I never expected to relate to a Green Day song again in my life, so is a huge nice surprise. I'm out6 points

I still remember when he messed up Brain Stew when I first saw Green Day and he just started skipping words until he got to the part he remembered 🤣 For the longest time I didn't understand how people could forget the lyrics to their own songs...but seeing as I will often walk into a room and forget why I did so I totally understand now.6 points

I've gotten my picture with him, had him shove me aside so he could get to Kevin (different occasions), but I still haven't had my ultimate (well, realistic ultimate ) goal- having him stage dive/crowd surf on me. One day.6 points

My dream is to come up on stage one day and just hug him like a puppy. Is it okay? CAN HE JUST LET ME GO ON STAGE!? Two time in my life he pointed me to go up. During KYE in 2012 and Knowledge in 2016. And TWICE he switched for a girl at my right. TWICE 😡6 points

To me this album is a collection of everything that Green Day has always done best. I think their two rock operas were really outliers and their true sweet spot has always been power pop punk — bright catchy melodies with a heavy dose of dark themes. This album hits that mark for me. I’m glad they’ve left the bombast behind and done this. It incorporates all they’ve learned with years of being Green Day, but also the best aspects of the Network, FBHT and Longshot. Some of these songs could have been on any of those albums. It’s become my favorite sound for them.6 points

Not sure if this was mentioned before (it surely was😄), but what I love a lot about the production of this album is that some songs have really strong and prominent stereo effects (is that even the correct term, lol? I have no clue about sound production, but what I mean is the effect that the voice or instrument seems to be on just one side or they flow from one side to the other when you listen with headphones). I especially love this on Graffitia. Some of my all-time favourite songs have a lot of those effects (like Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull or Money by Pink Floyd) and I just love that because it doesn't just feel like you listen to the song, but you're inside of it somehow. If that makes any sense😍 Well done Mr. Walker.6 points

I went to see Prima Donna in a little club when Kevin had that hairstyle and he turned up in the women's toilets to top up his hairspray because the men's didn't have a mirror . Had to keep it fresh. I'm blown away by Green Day's outfits for this era every day. Well done to their stylist.6 points

I thought the same, it's a cool design. It's funny I don't really think the album sounds very Foxboro-like though. Even though it has the rock n roll/60s vibes it feels more Longshot or just Green Day doing rock n roll than FBHT to me. Every time I hear "hanging with the cholos" it reminds me of when Aaron Cometbus described Billie as looking like a "sleepy cholo" and said the first thing he did when Green Day made money was buy a lowrider bike like the local Latin gangs had lol. Also the concept of Billie using the word yeyo is hilarious.6 points

I feel the same about Junkies on a High! You describe it perfectly. I love it, I feel the lyrics and the music deeply in that special way that only happens rarely. Last time that happened with a Green Day song for me was with Somewhere Now. But it's really a rare thing.5 points
-
I love that too! And how there's so many interesting extra sounds going on in the background like bits of piano and all kinds of effects. Definitely an album that benefits from being listened to with headphones.5 points

I absolutely agree with the point about the rock operas. That's not really their brand, but they did it so well. And because of that suddenly people felt that should've been the new normal and it put a lot of pressure on them to match that success. For me, it feels like with this album they finally realized they don't need to match that. That not every album has to be this epic thing. Not to say their other albums didn't feel genuine, but they sound like they're having a blast ( ) here.5 points

Love that Billie's version of "cocktail" or "formal" attire is still his black jeans with that huge ass belt buckle and sparkly jacket.5 points

There's one good thing about getting old: you really learn to stop giving a fuck what other people think. I love this album more with every listen, could not be less bothered by what social media and the music rags have to say.5 points

Very pleased with myself. I spotted a heap of "In China With Green Day" on one of the 1234 Go Records posts about FOAM being released and though I would see if they were selling them at a sensible price as I've never seen it below about £45 in the UK, snagged on for £17 including delivery5 points

I'm still working on getting that interview with them. I got a not right now response from their PR so that's a start! I'm halfway there!4 points

I was planning on going into town to buy a copy of FOAM, but when I was quite literally blown into the house by the wind tonight I walked into my room to find a copy of FOAM that had been bought for me sitting on my bed! Obviously I'm listening to it now! The artwork looks so much better in my hands than it does on a screen, and I couldn't have drawn it better than Billie4 points

Remember, this is the man who said in an interview "I hate long songs." And then in another interview said "My favorite song is JoS." So yeah, I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into what they're saying in interviews. Not that they're lying, but they don't take most of them seriously4 points

I got the trifecta! 😂 I need a new goal. That hug would be nice. Had his arm around me but I was so nervous for the photo I don’t remember it. Only saw it later and I was like sooo that happened 😊 He fucking barrels through pits lol4 points

"Gonna dance/ To something wild" hits me every time for some reason. It sounds desperate, chaotic, fun, and convivial at the same time. Oxymoronic? definitely. Sugar Youth and Graffitia are locked in combat for FOAM's best track in my ranking.4 points

It makes sense, but there has always been a segment who hated them for one reason or another. After they signed to a major, they were sellouts. After Warning, they'd gone soft. After AI, they were too much about their image. After Breakdown, they were trying too hard. Everyone knows about the trilogy. RevRad, they'd lost their edge. Some of this is from conversations I've had with people, not necessarily what the masses are saying about them. Let people be vicious; it does no good to bite back. Ultimately, the boys aren't going to be put off by a handful of faceless shit-stirrers.4 points
