I'm listening to the album on repeat right now. In a way it's kind of cool that it's so short because you can fit in so many listens lol. My favourite songs are Junkies on a High, Take the Money and Crawl, Stab You in the Heart and Graffitia. I love every song but it's pretty awesome that my favourites are at the end so it keeps getting better.10 points

I have some problems with this album but holy shit the overreaction by some people is ridiculous (I'm not just talking about reactions here but just generally). The album isn't that much different than what GD have been doing for the last 10 years with the exception of a couple experimental tracks but then you hear people saying that this album is the worst thing ever. I know people can have their own opinions and stuff but for people to be like "Omg this is the worst thing ever, this is like a 0/10" is just dumb imo and a ridiculous overreaction10 points

That would actually be a great title for album 14.9 points

I see them as a band that always gets stuck between the two worlds. One of them that underground scene with all these Gilman/DIY culture and the other one with full of sponsorships and commercial stuff. I think they have always been in that dilemma as a bad. There are people complaining about too much sponsorship in that era. It doesn’t bother me. They’ve always been a band like that after all imo but for example they played that small club after iHeart and shared photos from there. They always know how to balance those things and kept trying to make it work but sometimes could be a hard situation for them I guess.9 points

Really now Ariana Grande fans are mad? Get a fucking life. She doesn't need an army to defend her. And I'm sure she doesn't care what Billie thinks about her. He really can't express his opinion about artists without people jumping down his throat? I hate toxic fandoms like this. I love Slipknot and Billie said they sound like shit. Did I get mad? No because it doesn't change the way I feel about the band. Seriously, this whole thing pisses me off. He doesn't like someone that you do? Boo hoo. Keep scrolling and move on. I hate that more people are paying attention to this shit than the band's awesome new LP.8 points

The little Pinhead Gunpowder lyric reference in Graffitia (life during wartime) brings me joy Also now we have "Don't wake me up, don't wake me up" vs "Wake me up when September ends", how will it play out next October 1st?7 points

There's nothing offensive about the poster, people calling it "racist" are ridiculous. Green Day have a huge fanbase and the tiny amount of people who would actually be up in arms over a slightly cringy poster that the band themselves wouldn't even have had anything to do with making don't matter.7 points

Just saw this on Facebook (Green Day Italian rage & loves page) almost a re-creation!7 points

I have serious issues understanding why people is offended. It’s not saying that Swedish Pop or trap is shit, but that this record is something different. It does so in a bold way, but it’s also a pretty obvious and ironic statement. I feel like people love to find stuff to complaint about sometimes, maybe the PR team had to take this into consideration, but it seems really like an overreaction based on absolutely nothing to me.7 points

Alright, I think it's time for me to write down my thoughts on the album. My opinion might change as time goes by, but I think at this point I can at least say if I'm more on the positive or negative side. Father of All: I kind of did a 180 on this song. When it came out, I wasn't a fan at all. I struggled to dig the verses because of the falsetto but as time went by, the song grew on my. It took a long time, but I think it's a good opener and a decent lead single. It's not the best track on the album but it's one of the more aggressive tunes and I simply have a soft spot for those. 7/10 Fire, Ready, Aim: It's a nice little tune, but not more than that. I don't skip it, but compared to the rest of the album, it's meh. It does have this commercial vibe and I'm still not sure if it bothers me or not. I like Billie Joe's voice during the verses though. It's very raw and I like that. 6/10 Oh Yeah: For me, this is the biggest departure from the typical Green Day sound and a song that somehow has a different vibe than the rest of the record. I don't care about the Garry Glitter controversy since he doesn't profit from it and because I think that artist and art should always be separated. I wish the song had a bridge with a guitar solo or something, it always feels as if it should kick off at some point, but it never does. I still like it though, even if the live performances that we saw so far were rather weak. But the lyrics are strong and it's just so chill. 7/10 Meet Me On The Roof: Remember when Billie Joe said that he doesn't want to write the feel good-song of the year anymore? This one sounds too sweet to me, I don't know. I can't quite say why, but it's just too much for me, I guess. I'm not talking about the lyrics, just about the music. It might be a smart choice for a single and the music video is cute, but the song itself doesn't stand out. 6/10 I Was A Teenage Teenager: There's a HUGE discrepancy between music and lyrics here. The song sounds a lot like Weezer and I'm aware that some critics have pointed that out as a weakness. I like it though, it's a nice nod to them since they're also going on a tour together. The song is anthemic and it will surely work great in a live setting. But the lyrics, ugh. It's just TOO obvious. School is just for suckers? Come on, they can do so much better than that. It's ok to sing from the perspective of someone who is younger or even from the perspective of your younger self, but don't rely on those old tropes, that makes it kind of embarrassing. The music is lit though. 7/10 Stab You In The Heart: Love it! Yes, it does sound like Hippy Hippy Shake and there migh or might not be a lawsuit soon. But this is pure rock and roll and it works. And it's a great way to start the second half of the album, which is much stronger in my opinion. 8/10 Sugar Youth: Almost my favorite track on FOAM. I'd say this is the most typical Green Day song, fast, aggressive and pure fun. I also like the nod to She's a Rebel, which is an underrated song in my opinion. I just wish it was a bit longer, But this is punk rock, and they are a punk band after all. I have no idea how you can be a Green Day fan and not like this song. 8/10 Junkies On A High: For me, this is the weakest track on the album by far. I know that a lot of people on this forum like the lyrics and they are definitely the best part of the song. But other than that, I just find it really boring. RevRad had Outlaws and Trouled Times, FOAM has this. It's not bad, it just doesn't excite me. 4/10 Take The Money And Crawl: The effect when he sings Crawl is the shit! It's a good song, I just wish it was a little longer. That's a problem of the whole record though. It's a bit too short, and this song feels like it would be better if it was longer. A longer instrumental part, maybe? That would have been great. It still kicks ass though and since the whole record is a little less heavy, the more aggressive songs have an even bigger effect. 8/10 Graffitia: EASILY the best song on the album. If I had to make a list of the best Green Day songs of the last 10 years, this one would probably be on it. It sounds a lot like The Clash but is still undeniably Green Day. I wish this was the lead single because if that had been the case, my excitement for this whole era would have been so much bigger. This HAS to be played live and I think it might become a fan favorite. It's also a great way to end the album. I just love it. 9/10 If I combine all of my ratings, this record is a 7/10 for me. That's pretty accurate, actually. I still think that RevRad is better and FOAM is far away from being their best album. But it's still good and much better than I initially expected. And it's better than the trilogy because it feels more cohesive. It's not AI or Nimrod, but it's a decent rock album and that's perfectly fine.6 points

I wish b sides were still a thing. Could have a snappy short album and a few more songs for those craving them that way.6 points

They’re in a tough situation for sure but it’s been that way since 1994 and for the most part I think they balance it pretty well. Few bands at their level still do the kinds of small things they do and they do it to stay grounded. The trouble is when there’s logistics involved in organizing an event with other bands you have to bring in management and they’re looking at the big picture when it’s in the middle of a promotion cycle. The management isn’t going to spend much time on something that doesn’t earn them or the band any profit or big media attention. This is the kind of thing GD would have to decide to work out for themselves which in a down time they might, but they’re too busy right now. Everything has to be tied in with the album and tour. Not only that but a lot of the time I suspect it’s only Billie that is jazzed to do these things, play at Denny’s, do DIY punk shows... and Mike and Tre just don’t have that level of desire. Hence why it may have devolved to Billie on acoustic only.6 points

I've listened five times now. In general, I love the lyrics and I'm even tempted to analyse line by line like we used to on GDC. There are some real gems in there. They're incredibly dark but hidden by Billie's signature catchy misery. That "rock 'n' roll tragedy" line is just heartbreaking though. Musically, of the singles, Father of All grew on me after seeing it live and I always liked Fire Ready Aim. Oh Yeah is OK but I can live without the sample. I love Meet Me on the Roof. That's probably my favourite. I also really like Sugar Youth and Take the Money and Crawl. I think Stab You in the Heart and Graffitia still have some growing on me to do. Teenage Teenager sounds better on headphones but I won't be adding it to any playlists. I still don't like Junkies on a High. So now I'm just like6 points

His comment probably wasn't necessary, but it's really being blown out of proportion. It's just funny this is where we're at in society. Nirvana freely spoke about how they felt about other artists back in the day and it was never as big as deal as this. People didn't cry when every artist took shots at Justin Bieber. I just hate how people are acting like he called her a horrible name or said something really disparaging. He doesn't like her. Big deal. No, he didn't need to say it the way he did - he probably didn't need to say it at all, but it happened. I just think people need to chill. There are way worse things to actually get angry about instead of a rockstar throwing "shade" at someone. It wasn't even shade. I didn't think twice about the comment. The whole thing is just annoying and I'll be happy when Twitter moves on to something else.6 points

After spending the whole weekend with the album, I absolutely love it. I don't hate a single song. I do like some more than others, but I wouldn't skip any of them. My favorites so far are Sugar Youth, Meet me on the Roof, and Take the Money and Crawl.5 points

Summing up the weekend of scandals for me: - Ariana GrandeVSThe Billies: utter bullshit - 3 Billboards outside Oakland, California: bullshit reaction, but an avoidable bullshit. Thinking about it, Warner/Crush should have thought about that kind of idiotic reactions. Makes me cringe to see Fantano and his minions spreading bullshit on twitter through that, I hope it will be forgotten soon. The whole thing just misrepresented this band and where they are in their career in an annoying way. -Wackogate: what the fuck are you doing you Crush idiots? Peace.5 points

This. The bigger the company the more complicated everything gets and eventually the original idea gets lost. It's certainly possible to tour the world without being on a big label and having promotion, but that way bands end up playing small shows to few people. It's business and labels want to profit off their bands. So yeah, this doesn't seem far fetched - bands are in a weird relationship to labels because they don't get paid like regular employees or contractors, the label makes an investment in them and they need to earn enough for it to pay off. Untimately artists want to do their art, but when it comes to promotion and business, they're influenced by labels and management.5 points

I think no Green Day record has ever been collectively destroyed by critics. In fact, if you look at Metacritic (yeah, they suck, but at least it gives you an overview), all of their studio albums have received mostly positive reviews. The thing is that negative press usually gets more attention and it's fashionable to hate on popular artists. I'm not saying that it's not ok to criticize Green Day, but the perception that their newer releases have mostly received negative reviews is simply wrong. Fantano is just pretentious, in my opinion. He doesn't like them, so I don't care about what he has to say. To be fair, I think the guy from ARTV is actually a massive Green Day fan and gave the new record a 3,5/5, which isn't bad at all.5 points

4/5 review from the Guardian, pretty impressive considering their recent review history with the band. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/feb/09/green-day-father-of-all-motherfuckers-review “Green Day deliver everything with such panache that the songs’ limitations don’t really matter, especially when they manage to make tired old tropes seem fresh, as on the swooning brilliance of Take the Money and Crawl and Meet Me on the Roof.” And another 4 stars review from an Italian magazine that is not always that kind with the band. https://www.rockol.it/recensioni-musicali/album/9113/green-day-father-of-all “Among unicorns, loud Les Paul Jr and SG, today as yesterday Green Day makes you want to plug the jack of your guitar, for an afternoon made of fast and pure fun”5 points

Something else is how dark the lyrics to this album are covered up by happy tunes. For instance: "Rock n roll tragedy, I think the next one could be me, heaven's my rival, I sing in revelry" no but too young (and paedophilia isn't a joke)4 points
-
Yeah this length leaves you wanting more and that's better than feeling like you've had enough4 points
-
If it had say six more tracks, everybody who wants it longer would say its too long. I think it is awesome. You really don't get bored with it. Can't stop spinning it, very few things I don't like about it, especially in comparison to the other shit that is coming out nowadays. Still proud they can still write a record unlike 99.9% of bands out there, especially from their era. Still working and creating, it's not like its possible to please most people these days let alone everybody as a whole.4 points
-
And it also comes to the fact that they have a management team because when you are this kind of band you can’t manage things on your own, you are too busy answering stupid questions in lame interviews and preparing for a world tour, it’s part of the game. And someone can fuck it up sometimes. I mean it’s either retiring from the pop scene, which doesn’t seem what the band want to do at this point of their career (for good reasons IMHO), or as you said handling the balance as better as you can. Next time I would use someone that knows how to deal with this kind of shit, or just not do that and simply organize a show at the Golden Bull.4 points
-
The band themselves may not be this blind and they probably mean well, it's clear Billie loves playing small shows and it's not something he does for profit or good press, but the management clearly misunderstands how this works. If their plan was to do a "punk" show with a corporate sponsorship, I'm glad the bands were reasonable enough to say no, because it would have been the saddest thing ever.4 points
-
Billie loves to play small shows and this sort of shit, I mean look at the Coverups, block parties and so on. Of course that doesn’t make them part of the SoCal underground scene, more the Oakland small business scene. But I think it might even have been a sincere desire from the band to “get in touch” with the donation to the scene. It’s just sad if this works when the guys do shit on their own, but once it touches the GD world and the industry management dynamics turn into shit. I don’t think the guys are that stupid to not understand this is not the way you deal with kids.4 points
-
I'm really enjoying the falsetto and high singing in general on this album. Glad Billie went for it. Like even just in the verses of Fire Ready Aim (which is such a banger btw), the aggressive lyrics in that high voice is awesome. And all the spiteful lyrics like that (knock your teeth out to the ground you're a liar, I wanna stab you in the heart, you can take a walk or you can suck my cock etc) have such cool old school GD vibes, reminds me of Nimrod. Everything about the album is so good . My love for Green Day was just reinvigorated again.4 points

I know you don’t want to know... but I really love this song and I want to give my interpretation As I read the lyrics (which I love by the way), the overall meaning is explained in the first line: “What are the symptoms of our happiness and Civil War?“ To me this song is about an interior conflict, either literally about love (I don’t want to be a Rome as the romantic icon), or about a more existential feeling towards the state of things (Romeo drinking the poison because he thinks Juliet is dead). Depending how I chose to read this, the rest of the song changes. I prefer the existential version In this case the rest is a in interior and exterior fight (Mano y Mano) resolved through wildness, dance and music, struggling to find a cure. The dangerous feelings, and the voices inside his head. Taking the line you quoted in the context of the whole verse: “I'm hearing voices up inside my head (Oh, what you thinkin'?) I need a sugar fix, it's making me sick (Oh, what you drinkin'?) I wanna drink all the poison in the water I wanna choke like a dog that's on a collar I am the child of coyote and bandito I'm drinking whiskey by the river doing yayo“ This is a list of masochistic, extreme, violent reactions and desires as a result to that conflict, the hell that is breaking loose. Dark, beautiful shit if you ask me. In the context of the record this is also the transition from the rage of Stab you in the heart to the beautiful desolation of Junkies on a high. Not rage, but not even contemplation of caos, more like escaping self destruction “dancing to something wild”. These are the emotions it gives me at least4 points

Ok, so I wanted to listen to this album somewhere in May, because I wanted to wait and hear it under the influence of psychoactive substances, made for better music instrospection. BUT, to me, Green Day is like quitting smoking - you swear yourself to quit, to do something else, but then 5 days pass - and you are chain-smok.. listening. Same happened here - I used the substances now. So this is my report. I hope you will enjoy this: 1. I went by the river near where I live in my city, among the trees, to wait for everything to kick in and set-up. I was afraid, because of such low expectation I had set for this album. I didn't want to dislike it. So I was scared shittless. And they had so few space for a mistake - only 7 songs were left. Father Of All Motherfuckers - it kicked in, OK, I'm listening through it. It was and still, even being high, a normal 7/10. 2. Fire, Ready, Aim. Also a 7/10, but maybe because I knew them and listened repeatedly to the annoyance? 3. Oh Yeah! This song by Green Day standards is probably the worst from the album. 5/10. However, I was feeling anxious, because the next one was going to be the one I didn't know, and I was thinking about my girlfriend that I left at my house, because I wanted to listen to Green Day, and I was thinking soooo... 4. And then it kicked in. Meet Me On The Roof, girl. Simply amazing song. Words cannot describe it. Psychoactive substance, differently than for the previous three songs, told that THIS song HAS a soul, and it is DAMN HEART-CLENCHING. My favorite song, 10/10. 5. I was amazed how good I Was A Teenage Teenager was. Seriuosly. Fuck the haters. You don't like - you don't listen to it. This song is FUCKING GOOD. Also, by now I could hear Butch's Walker's great influence on the superb production (yes, this is one of the best, if not the best produced album Green Day has ever done), and SO CATCHY melody. This is all I want. Lyrics come second in the case of this song. 10/10. 6. Stab You In The Heart. 9/10. OK, after hearing this song, I wanted to go back to my home and a girlfriend, similarly to the lyrics I wanted to stab her in the heart so good classical rock vibes, through a Green Day lense. 7. Sugar Youth. 7/10. This one didn't "click", but what I mean, if it doesn't click for a Green Day, that means it's an amazing song by normal music standards. 8. Junkies On A High. 9/10. This was the part of my trip home where I left the riverside, and entered my house district, with many junkies vibes. So I could literally FEEL what Billie felt writing this song. Words can't do justice. But then... 9. I got the most secret, sinister and shady vibes from Billie Joe Armstrong's subconscious. This intro. It gave me chills. Again, I was impacted by psychoactive substances, so it was so clear to me. Take The Money And Crawl. 10/10. Some of the dirtiest lyrics Billie has ever written. 10. And then. Finally, I reached my home. I reached the destination back to my girlfirend. I was looking at the rooftop while coming back, and just thought, "thank you, Billie, for making this album and for making this day amazing". Meet Me On The Roof, my girlfriend. In the suburbs of Graffitia. 10/10. I love Green Day.4 points
