  3. Its more of a relief that they didn’t go ahead and call the album “American Idiot 2: The father of all Motherfuckers” like they were originally thinking.

  4. I get your point, but personally I don’t get a “they stopped caring” attitude. I get a “this world is so fucked up that I want to give people something to dance with, we want to create a space where they don’t have to deal with all the hate and violence”. That’s caring to me, just in another form. But I get your point, they are pulling out a rock n roll badass attitude, which is fun and entertaining to me (I take it as entertainment, I mean Billie still is also the dork posting videos of Lenny on IG). But I understand you might prefer another approach, everyone relates to these guys differently Anyway when Mike talks about this record defining their sound for the next 10 years, I think he talks primarily about the sound and not necessarily the “packaging” of it. It would be great to hear this also applied to more political lyrics IMHO, Graffitia is a great example of it. Who knows what the future will bring, for sure I am very curious and confident in this band after hearing this record

  5. I totally get that the album's theme of escapism might not work for everyone, but in my case, I totally get the feeling of wanting to shut down everything and just letting go. In October, I wrote a post in here about how the riots the sparked a whole social emancipatory movement in Chile allowed me to connect to Revolution Radio in ways I couldn't before, and how it perfectly described my experience being part of the protests at the time. But 3 months later, I'm so emotionally drained, I literally have no idea what's gonna happen to my country and if we're ever getting out of this social collapse, and because I actively work with social organizations and universities, sometimes I desperately need to turn on some music really loud and forget for a while. And in that sense, I think this album embodies perfectly what escapism is about, cause the way I see it, escapism is not just about detaching and successfully dissociating from the social climate, it also involves a certain self-awareness that the reason why you're running away is because you care too much, and I think the lyrics in this album perfectly contextualize this menacing darkness that lurks from the shadows and eventually swallows you up until you become comfortable in that state of emotional vacancy. Because the thing is, everywhere you look in my country, there's graffiti paintings of victims, protests slogans, destroyed monuments, fire barricades and it's messy, and ugly and totally not what people envision when they think of "the most developed country in Latin America", but we've started to see the beauty in it and it's already becoming part of our cities. And yeah, sometimes shit is so heavy that you can find people dancing to latin trap and spray painting stupid memes in the middle of protests, because you just gotta cope in some way. It's the reason why I can also identify with the aesthetics of this era, 'cause I think there is beauty in the grittiness, absurdity and irreverence of the modern world. So in a way, I think this album manages to be personal in the way that opens up about its vulnerabilities (good and bad) and allows itself to be chaotic without taking itself too seriously, because there's literally nothing to make sense of. It's funny, because I think a really negative review really nailed the album's spirit when they described it as a "party that no one except the person throwing it is at, and they're sitting there surrounded by balloons and streamers and a bowl of sad, warm punch while upbeat music plays for no one", 'cause really, I don't think this album is really trying to sell the idea of having a total blast, it's pretty evidently just smoke and mirrors, but sometimes when your world is literally on fire, you just really need a good pity party. So yeah, this was a very long winded (and probably overly personal) response, but I hope it made sense and helped people understand this point of view, which I think is something Billie experiences in some degree too, judging from how attuned he is with his emotions and his characteristic political involvement.

  7. So my mom watched the Ellen thing and man I think she's on a Billie kick. The whole time she was like "God, he's so cute! He's almost 50? He looks so good!" Also, she can't remember Mike's name and will often say "Yeah, hi Dirt"

  10. The only thing I don't like about this record is that it's so short. I can't believe how quickly it's over and yet I wouldn't change a single song, I just want more! Like a few people said, I think it does a great job of acknowledging the dark things going on in the world, inside Billie, ourselves, whoever can relate to what's expressed....but at the same time trying to just escape it for awhile and dance. I like that idea of escaping but not ignoring things. And the way topics are mentioned feels like it's more based in internal struggle and a stream of consciousness way of trying to process it all rather than an on the nose speech to the masses. All things I appreciate and relate to quite a bit right now. Plus I'm a sucker for dark lyrics set to upbeat tunes 😊. I also LOVE how many different directions they went musically. Usually I like albums that feels more consistent but somehow the variety actually all fits together. Junkies on a High is probably my favorite and I loved hearing (on whatever radio thing aired last night) that Billie was influenced by rap but knows that's not a skill he has so this is what he came up with. I could totally hear the influence yet he finds a way to do it that's authentic to him and it works. There's also so many weird little effects in these songs like the way he says "crawl" in TTMAC. I know a lot of them probably bug some people but I love it because it doesn't feel over done. The whole record just feels like every choice was made with even more care than usual and they all fit together like puzzle pieces. I know a lot of people would disagree but I hope most of those people will give it time. This record won't be for everyone and I respect that, but I think there's a lot more thought and quality to it than many of the negative comments give it credit for. I hope many of those folks just need to spend a little more time with it. (Because seriously, people need to be into this at Hella Mega. These are dance songs and I don't wanna have to dance next to hundreds of bored statues 😜)

  11. It was very unpopular, but then there were way more early Green Day purists around than there are now. The main complaint was that people missed "old" Green Day. Some thought they'd only done it to stay mainstream, so they'd have been the ones saying "it's too commercial." It wasn't on GDC (I was a lurker then so wouldn't have seen everything anyway), but one fan I knew refused to even listen to it and sold off his Green Day collection. He was one of many who felt "betrayed" by a second rock opera. People who loved it were accused of being blind fangirls. So I'm always happy to see people appreciating it now!

  12. I am both a massive fan and at times their biggest critic, I guess those two things go hand in hand. I’ve been a bit more of the latter the last couple of months, as I hadn’t been giving this album the benefit of the doubt for a multitude of reasons (production, concerns about the approach and vibe given the underlying dynamic with Warner, etc.). I hadn’t ever been this apprehensive about a new release, and I’ve been a massive fan since Dookie. I first listened to the album front to back last night using my great headphones. I was grinning ear to ear halfway through Meet Me on the Roof and it didn’t stop until the end of Graffitia. I won’t get into a detailed review here, there have already been plenty of those. But for this longtime fan (26 years), I am happy and super excited about getting to know these songs and enjoy this era and tour. I should’ve known better- they haven’t let me down yet and apparently aren’t going to start now. Very happy with it. Does it have the same impact on me as 21CB or Nimrod/ Warning? Not yet, and probably won’t, but that’s ok. It’s a hell of a pleasure to listen to, and for that I’m grateful. My weekend just improved substantially knowing I’ll have a chance to get to enjoy this.

  15. This, the production of this record creates a really superior listening experience for me. It’s really a pleasure to listen to it on any form, but when I shoot this from my sound system it’s really a delight. I am so happy for the consistency and quality of the work behind this.

  19. The band name is literally a reference to smoking weed. With it being legalized (in some form) in 33 US states, this should be far from controversial. At least in North America. NOW WHEN IS MY GRINDER GETTING HERE

  21. IMO foamf is more consistent in terms of mixing / song structure than revrad. I like the vocal is a bit hidden behind the instruments. It's much dirtier. On revrad songs like SB and OW don't match the rest a bit. And the mixing is kind of uneven. On trilogy the vocal is very polished and dry and it's in the foreground, guitars are hidden behind. So I really appreciate their new sound.

  22. Almost all reviews I've seen in newspapers over here in Germany are very bad too. Most of them write something like "in an election year you would have expected an American Idiot 2 from Green Day", but none of them was clever enough to make the connection that we got FOAM as an "in your face" because of those high expectations 😄

  27. @inthehallwaynow I’m in the same boat. It’s a short album as it is and I only like two songs. And I don’t even love them, just like them. I’m glad people are finding things to love about this, but it feels like a very b-side album to me.

  30. The older i get, the more i realise people want to put Green Day in a box so bad and get American Idiot or Dookie over and over agin. As soon as they try something new, its like "ugh this doesn't sound like Green day" like its a bad thing. I dunno, i just think its great when they redefine what people think of them and people can't handle it because the sound doesn't fit in the box theyve put the band in.

  31. Sorry for the random shit posted close to each other, but rewatching this now I can't help but posting here. I absolutely adore Billie's speaking and studio singing voice, but the "growling" he sometimes takes when singing live (especially singing high!) is really what I love the most about his voice. I mean it's so sexy and uniquely sexy. The thickness his voice takes when he sings that "sideways" for instance

  36. I wasn’t so much referring to the music itself. I like most songs on FOAM and I definitely want them to evolve and explore new sounds, even if I don’t necessarily like some parts of the outcome. I was more referring to the general vibe and attitude, the „fuck it all, we don’t care about anything, let’s party“. That can feel fresh, fun and interesting for a while, but I sincerely hope this won’t be their artistic approach for the next 10 years. I hope one day they’ll start caring again.

  37. Well if the boys in GD are on GDC and are reading these threads, then guys, please play Sugar Youth and Graffitia and PLEASE play Take the Money and Crawl. FOAM may not be their Magnum Opus (by definition as greatest work of art) but it has its own solidity, arc, and of course a couple bangers.

  38. My thoughts? It's all over the place and not the standard Green Day have worked so hard for all these years. Wouldve been an awesome Longshot EP if you scrap the first 4 tracks

  39. It's not the album that I wanted but it's a lot better than the one I tought we'd get, so I'm happy with it. It's well produced and like the instrumental / melodies. What bothers me is that I always expect at least 1 song with a great lyric that will hit me instantly, and that didn't happen with FOAM. This "party 'till the world ends" kind of thing is so boring to me.

  40. Well I will say the official songs are noticably better than the leaked tracks but I still don't like this album. Grafittia is the only one I can stomach.
