My unpopular opinion: I love the trilogy! I've been a defender of these albums for awhile. I like that the band didn't overthink the songs or leave some on the cutting room floor. The albums collectively serve as Billie Joe's stream of consciousness. And the results, are quite revealing.
The lyrical content is honest focusing on themes that people experience as they are getting older. Especially if you are a rock star with many vices at your disposal! Billie Joe was going through an interesting period in his life. He was partying with the cast of the AI musical, touring with Green Day and the FBHT, and taking lots of pills coupled with excessive drinking. Sounds exhausting for anyone, especially a guy in his late 30s with a wife and two kids! All of these complex issues culminated in Billie Joe writing songs at rapid speed. The lyrics on tracks like Fell for You, Missing You, and Stay the Night are fantastic, albeit a bit dark. Even darker, are songs like Lazy Bones, Lady Cobra, and X-Kid.
Lyrical content aside, the band sounds like they're having fun! Not locked into a concept album, they were able to play and jam free of constraints. And they were debuting these songs for tiny audiences at surprise shows. It probably felt like they were back at Gilman. The musicianship was very tight and Green Day was "firing on all cylinders" as Mike Dirnt has said. Great solos from all the members of the band including Jason White.
I can understand why Billie Joe doesn't always want to revisit these songs on tour. But it's a shame that some people view these albums as filler. It's just another chapter in the story of Green Day. And I look forward to many more chapters!
