I think AI and 21st CB are Green Day's most ambitious and epic albums, Rev Rad doesn't compete with them by that criteria. But to me Rev Rad's songwriting is on another level of emotional honesty and maturity that impresses me more than any other of their albums. Maybe I'm biased but I have to say 21st CB was the best live. They basically took what they did with AI and made it even bigger and better, and Billie's showmanship and voice had only got all the better too. There's something about them live now as well though....I don't think I've ever seen them as full of love, joy and appreciation for what they do on stage and it makes the atmosphere absolutely magical.8 points

This reminds me of one of the saddest but most beautiful quotes: "You get a strange feeling when you're about to leave a place. Like you'll not only miss the people you love, but you'll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you'll never be this way ever again." This era has been one of the most special times in my life. My entire life has felt full and happy this year for many reasons, but I'm sure having my favorite guys back in my life has a whole lot to do with it. The intimacy of this album and this tour has been like nothing else. And I don't want to forget how special this past year has made me feel. After 12 years of loving this band, this was the point I felt like me and the band had finally grown into each other perfectly, if that makes any sense. Falling in love all over again as an adult with the band who got you through grade school is pretty damn magical.8 points

Oh absolutely! ....which is why (I hate to repeat myself): we so desperately need a live album / DVD or upload or whatever to document this tour and album cycle. I think this shouldn't aim to match the epicness of AI or 21CB, but rather (kind of like RevRad) act as a kind of statement; ''Hey! We're still here! We still love each other, what we're doing and of course our fans! And we still kick ass ''.7 points

Totally agree about the emotional honesty and maturity of RevRad’s lyrics. For the first time, he isn’t hiding behind characters when he expresses himself which makes the songs more moving. I had thought 21CB was their live peak until the summer leg of this tour. I saw an early 21CB show from London and it was nearly identical to the shows we got at the tail end of this tour in terms of energy and performance. Add to that how healthy and happy they all are and it is safe to say they are at their live performance peak right now.6 points

Oh jeez, I feel this so much. After the 21CB era I thought my passion for the band had reached its peak and that I was losing interest (stopped coming here, stopped keeping track of what the band were doing) but RevRad brought it all back and it was even stronger. And I do think it had to do with my state of mind as well. When 21CB came out I had just finished my exams at school, I was doing regular walks and eating healthily and going out with friends and life was pretty good. During the trilogy I was at Uni and I ended up hating my course, and I'd also discovered other fandoms which took over Green Day during that era. But this era arrived at a time when things have been going well which must make a difference somehow. And it's even better than 21CB because I've actually made friends here upon my return6 points

My 3-year-old likes to get a rise out of me by telling me, "Billie Joe MY boyfriend!" when she knows that clearly he is mine. She has a crush on Egon from the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, so she obviously can't have both. Nevermind me being married to her dad, that's a minor technicality....6 points

He has explicity said its about his wife though, but I think the apocalyptic tone you’re picking up on is the link to the concept of the album, that it’s a love story set in a collapsing, chaotic society as a backdrop — love between two people as an act of desperation as if it were their last night on earth.5 points
-
Lol you wouldn't have said that a couple of years ago! Since shortly after it came out it was constantly trashed and it was difficult for those of us who enjoyed it to even discuss anything about it without people feeling the need to cut the conversation off to say it's crap and ridicule anyone who likes it. The positive posts about it now are mostly a backlash against that/people being happy to finally be able to talk about it positively without getting trashed, and people seeing the good in it and admitting it's not quite as bad as they first thought. And people will always be extra enthusiastic about an album when it's new (was even the case with the trilogy for short time), so I think it's natural that that's the case with Rev Rad. I'd say reactions to it are already a bit more cooled down/balanced than when it was first out.5 points

Yeah but Billie still manages to make it sexy . To be fair other than the reference in the title it's really about PMS/the emotional effect of a period and not the blood . Plus guys not being silly and squeamish about periods = Oh what about the whole "Oh bless me lord for I have sinned..." part of East Jesus Nowhere?5 points

Insomniac and Warning are such goddamn amazing albums, it drives me crazy whenever people slag on them.4 points
-
I agree that they never reached a clear peak, and I think the fact that their "peak" can be debated this much supports that. This is why they're one of the only rock bands ever to stay this relevant for this many years and have multiple spikes in their career. Rev Rad may not have blown up to the level of AI but I think that's mostly due to AI being such a change from what they had done before and because rock music still existed in the mainstream back then.4 points
-
Here's an unpopular opinion Insomniac is better than dookie (and that's something coming from me since my favorite Green Day song is on dookie) and 21st century breakdown is better than American idiot Now that I've slightly insulted both their "best albums" the attack against me may begin.4 points
-
Though I do love RevRad I will double down on an unpopular opinion by saying this — I think AI and 21CB represent their creative peak and full realization of their potential. I love all their albums though, and I do believe they have the ability to reach that potential again, which is why I’m super excited about the album(s) to come.4 points

I totally get this - although for me it's kind of the opposite from what you and @Jenn. are describing. I'm feeling hugely appreciative of the Rev Rad era happening and the fandom entering my life exactly when they did because it's been an otherwise pretty shitty year in a number of ways. I don't even want to think about what it would've been like without the music, joy, passion and community that comes along with following them. Guess I'm one wave behind you in the cycle - although I don't plan to leave4 points

I don't get the dislike for KFAD. It's one of my favorite songs and I love seeing them play it live.4 points

Disagree on Dookie/Insomniac but I also think they're v. different and therefore hard to compare Agree on 21st CB/AI. Both are amazing but with 21st CB they built on what they started with AI and made the most ambitious and theatrical music they've made to date, it's a really beautiful album.3 points

My mom does this all the time. I think they should've released one album with the "best" songs from the trilogy on it, then released the rest of the songs as a compilation afterwards. That way, people probably wouldn't have felt as overwhelmed and we would still get to hear all the songs.3 points
-
Ha Ha You're Dead will always be my favourite Shenanigans song. It kinda disappoints me that it was released on a compilation album, as opposed to a studio album.3 points

I absolutely love the picture that person made of Billie and Rocky. It's the perfect gift to remember him.3 points

I don't really understand it being massively overrated. Even though there are quite a lot of people that like the trilogy here, there's still a good few who hate it and most people generally think it's the weakest offering from Green Day (I am not among those people, but I'd say it's the weakest of their 2000's albums). If you look at an album ranking forum thread, Uno Dos and Tré are usually in the bottom 4 or 5 albums I mean, in a Green Day forum, it's expected for a majority of the users to like most/all of the albums3 points

I like the song Rev Rad. Although it wouldn't be near the top end of my favourite GD songs list, I think it gets too much criticism and its a great live song.3 points
-
Yeah, I know. I don't have a problem with it at all, I like Red Tide and I agree it's pretty cool coming from a guy. Yes! And "protest me, second guess me..." is just as good3 points

The way Billie rolls his R while singing "serenade" in peacemaker, like this if you agree3 points

Thank God I'm not the only one that thinks this. Insomniac is my 2nd favourite GD album, and Dookie is in my bottom five.2 points

I can honestly say I agree with this. But then I’m of the belief that every Green Day album is better than the one that came before it (Trilogy a possible exception after 21CB)2 points

Shenanigans is flawless there is literally no bad song on it IMO. every song is amazing omg2 points

Setting aside whether they produce a DVD (which only the fans that already know they are awesome would buy anyway) that’s what I think is so important about high profile televised festivals like Global Citizens. I want the world to know what we do.2 points

Rotting is one of these songs where I'm mad at myself for kind of forgetting it for a while. Whenever I hear it again, I think to myself: How could I? That song is awesome!2 points

While I really love RevRad and do think it's better than the trilogy, I will say it doesn't stand up against AI or 21CB. But I still like it a lot. I find it to be a fun album and it really got me excited for the band again, so that's a win in my book. I dunno if I would call it overrated. Maybe we're reading different threads, but the responses I see is either RevRad is good or RevRad is bad.2 points
-
Yeah it was a fan, can't remember the details but it was proved somehow (also it's kind of obvious imo, didn't really sound like him and way too much time and effort went into it). I think it makes sense that he was excited and posted about it a lot when he first got Mojo, he wasn't on social media when he got the other dogs so can't compare. And he's really only mentioned Rocky a handful of times if you add it up and happened to do the playing piano thing with him, most likely just chance that things worth posting on social media didn't happen with the other dogs. He could give an equal amount of attention to all of them and we wouldn't know.2 points

I think the problem for me is that when things are shitty, I find myself less able to enjoy things that make me happy - but I do understand the escapism music and fandom bring.2 points

I remember saying if I won the Green Day @ your back yard contest then I would ask them to play nothing but different versions of KFAD BIG HEADED BILLIE. I mean she's not lying.2 points

Ha! Having kids is the biggest trip, is it not?! And here's the kicker, her first crush before either Billie or Egon: Dion Dimucci of Dion and the Belmonts fame. When she finally goes to preschool, the other kids are going to look at her like she's an alien I guess that's what happens when you grow up with parents who are totally out of the loop with most modern pop culture 😂2 points

So are we listing all the times Billie sounds good now...? *rolls up sleeves* Just been to see "It" and spent more time appreciating the late 80s outcast teenager aesthetic and picturing our young punk friends living in that era, than being scared2 points
